  • How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

Problem:  After I do a backup one using ghettoVCB on a local VMFS volume, I have a virtual machine that I can start something happened to that running.  However, sometimes I just need a file from the OS level, which means that I would need to start to get them, but then I have an IP address conflict.  I can't imagine a way to have the NICs turned off and still be able to move the file.  If I change the IP addresses, the software that I need to create the file that I need to transfer no longer works because, although there no need of constant connectivity to the seller, it is locked to the public IP address.http://communities.vmware.com/images/emoticons/sad.gif

Material:  I have two 4 ESXi hosts to work, each with local VMFS volumes.  They share a private vlan common and a vlan common public.  They each ssh, ftp, wput, wget, and rsync available.  I have a Windows 2003 Server VM which also hosts a NFS and the VI client and other VMWare tools.  It also has private and public interfaces as do virtual machines that would be to make and receive the OS files.

Question:  How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

    Thank you!

Yes Mr President, make sure you set the network on this virtual machine to be connected to the 'Internal' vswitch, you set up before turning the power on to the virtual machine.

  • Backup to the backup process mode two-step SAN vs NBD?

    Hi all

For the moment, I implement two-stage backup using software and technology according to the enclosed diagram,

Note: The network between iSCSI SAN and ESXi 2 x servers are different subnet (see the color code)

Blue bottle indicates NTFS partition, while the black cylinder indicates the VMFS

First backup process is to enter all virtual machines inside the MD3000i VMFS (green cylinder partition 1) initiated by the Windows XP Backup VM who canl grow to be more than 1 TB drive hard to contains the VM backup (day 1 - given that the backup has taken more than 20 hours). -& gt; Choose SAN m mode?

Second step is to copy the big Windows XP machine that contains the backup of virtual machine of the iSCSI SAN on the backup server for the Strip to check-in the day before (day 2)-& gt; Maybe I should use NBD-m to this period?

Any other suggestion please this two-step backup plan would be greatly appreciated.

    See you soon,.

    Kind regards

    AWT

In this case your 'virtual' VCB can use hotadd mode that is designed to VCB in VM.

The external VCB (to BE) can only use the NDB mode instead, the cause has no direct access to the San.

  • VCB backup snapshot or virtual machine?

    Hello

Workflow of VCB, I read these procedures frequently and I'm confused by what backup software is stored:

".....  Put the virtual machine snapshot mode and take a snapshot.

.. .Mount snapshot of the VM for the proxy backup (to win)

.. software backup .the performs a regular backup of the snapshot of the virtual machine moving data from backup media... »

So I wonder what backup software is saved: any virtual machine or virtual machine snapshot? and why?

And for linux, it will export (copy) the snapshot of the machine the VCB proxy virtual of the SAN. If a single snapshot is stored to the proxy of VCB mount point, why VCB proxy must have enough space to contain the largest virtual machine?

Can someone give me some clarification?

    LAN

    To clearify:

In the world of VMware ESX, a snapshot is the same as the 'entire virtual machine' as you say. It's just the disks 'frozen' in a State of know. VCB can then move up and back up this disk (or copy it to the VCB proxy) while the virtual machine is placing the changed data in the temporary file. Some people refer to this temporary file that the file 'snapshot', while the other, see you in the frozen file as the 'snapshot' file, and creates confusion for users/students. A 'snapshot' is simply the functionality described above.

When the backup action is finalized, VCB tells vCenter to "remove the snapshot" which actually means that the data in the temporary file are merged with the 'frozen' disk that is then back 'defrosted' and put into live operation.

  • cannot not power off the virtual machine, but don't think the host it is running!

I have two clusters VI3. An older cluster to 3.02 hosts and a new cluster with ESXi hosts. Level of current patch on ESXi hosts. New guests and old presenters sees the same storage, but I have additional storage which can see only the new virtual machine.

Most of the migration to the new cluster went very well. A few questions. But a VM just GIVES me fits.

After the failure of attempts to migrate the virtual machine to the new storage, I thought I just migrate the virtual machine to the new host and leave it on the old storage, for now, until we could find something later. VCenter events logs show that the migration has expired. However, the virtual machine appears in the new cluster and is no longer in the old cluster. Also, he turned on itself for some reason any. Turn off in Vcenter gives the error "the operation failed because another task is underway." Having the VM that I could put it off in before Vcenter, and no no unsure of how to use the RCLI for this, I have connected to the host directly mode "not supported" and has run vm-support - x to get the list of running virtual machines and their ID's so that I could kill him. However, the host does not include this virtual machine in the list of virtual machines. So I think a virtual computer that runs Virtual Center, but he thinks the host it runs on is unclear if I can't kill the process.

    Help?

Have you tried to restart ESXi management officers, as well as the vc service is restarted?

  • Cannot transfer Time Machine backups on the new drive

I store my backup Time Machine on a Seagate 1.5 TB drive when the drive starts giving errors.  I had files on this computer and was able to transfer all except for 2 who were on unreadable sectors.  Fortunately, one of these files was an older archived version that I could afford to give up and the other was a temporary file in the photo library and since all other items were okay, I think I'm good.

The problem came when I tried to transfer my Time Machine backup of 800 GB for a new disk.  When I copy and Exact-paste (cmd-opt-shift-v) the Backups.backupdb to the new drive, it gets the extent of November 23, 2015 and then dies because reports of the Console to the system, it gets an IO error when you try to read:

    /Library/SystemMigration/history/migration-245250B6-4F52-4FBB-BD61-546A8C19CCD5/ QuarantineRoot/private/var/db/dyld/dyld_shared_cache_x86_64

in the relevant backup.  And because it's an IO error it simply abandons the whole process so I have no backup from November 23, included, for now.

Because the disc is unstable, I wasn't able to use disk utility to make repairs on it.  The disc is what is and I have to deal with the mess, that I do not have the disorder, that I would have.

I tried to manually place the missing files in the database, but the operating system will not let me.  I want to just copy my backup / OS X stop abandonment and be more like Windows and give me the options to "try again" or "fail" instead of just quitting!  I mean, why should I lose my backup all hierarchy of 23 November and beyond, simply because you cannot read a file, a file that I could simply replace in the backup of the current version or you can just ignore it.

I tried to copy files on and setting xattr on them to be backup items, but they are wrong.  I tried chflags parameter to make the writable directory, but it does not work.  I can't copy the missing files to fix my archives.  Help.

Please, don't try to transfer backups of a failed drive. Placing the disk aside until you don't know no longer you need the data, then delete and recycle. Start a new backup set on the new drive. For more security, you always have more than one backup.

  • How to transfer Time Machine backup to the new external hard drive

I'm upgrading to a 1 hard external to the Western reader to with 5 TB of Seagate.  This is because Time Machine has used the 1 TB drive.  How can I transfer the files from backup Time Machine from the old to the new drive so that backups continue to have access to the old files.

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Admin oassword failed usb would be my Norton backups have the password

USB backup for administration password did not work would be Norton backup have the password

do not have a used computer at least forgotten admin password tried to use the usb port as he asked it remained red and did not work have some backups Norton wonders if they have the password somewhere on the

Drive failed because you have changed the password after you have created the USB password reset disk.

There are many options built into Windows to help you out of this situation:

    • Restart the computer with your Windows repair CD, then use system restore to set Windows in a few days (only works if you have recently changed the password).
    • Log on to your account admin to spare, and then reset the password for your existing account (works only if you set up an alternative admin account).
    • Log in as administrator mode without failure, then reset the password for your existing account (the password is usually empty).
    • Use the password indicator (works only if you have created a hint and if it's good enough to allow you to guess the password).
    • Check your paper files (works only if you threw down the password somewhere)
    • Ask your friendly computer dealer to reset the password for you.

Backups do not store the passwords that you can extract. Users can do that by keeping a written record.

  • Cannot create Windows 8.1 System Image - fails with backup of the EFI

I have problems trying to create an Image of my Surface Pro system.

The program seems to work but then sends a message:

    The backup failed.

It has been a failure in the preparation of the backup image of any of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)

    Additional information:

The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0 x 80070021)

The volume on which it backup fails is the first volume - the EFI system partition.

The backup is set to save on my Dlink NAS, that works very well for my history file backups.

I thought that somehow my anti-virus software may be to blame, but I'm not under any third-party anti-virus software.

I also thought that if I started mode safe mode with networking that could avoid the problem, but the backup is not allowed to run in Mode without failure.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Thank you

    Alan

P.S. I think that I misunderstood the problem: If again, trying to backup, but instead using my SIN I plug a drive in the USB, then my backup work normally (and I can then copy / move the backup on the NAS server).  Looks like this might be a D-link problem maybe: D-link box is a DNS-320 ShareCenter.

P.P.S.  Although the DNS-320 was purchased from a major last week retailer, the firmware was version 1.0 and 2 years.  Updated to v 1.01 seems to have solved the problem: at least for a PC.

    Hi Alan,

As you said that the problem does not occur when you use a USB drive, the problem might be related to
    connection problems with NAS.

I suggest you send the request in the Technet forum. Technical expertise to solve these problems is available in this forum.

  • Time Machine - an exclusion different backup for the backup drives different time machine

I hope someone can help me.

For these past years, I used 2 Time Machine backups to keep all safe. I have 1 backup x who lives at home and is 3 times the size of my disk. I also have a second drive of laptop that I travel with, which is partitioned to give a little time machine backup, more than 1.5 TB of "overflow storage (for movies, video files, etc).

Recently however, I realized that my "storage of listening" actually contains a large amount of data I wouldn't lose (especially the photos of my children because they were born), so now I want to save this drive as well.

If my ideal situation is to have a huge drive I leave at home. This contains backups of the computer AND 'excess of storage' backup. It's pretty simple to implement.

But can someone tell me if my trip backup, will try also to the other partition of the backup drive? And if so, is there anyway to give different time machine backups different exclusions.

Hope that makes sense and hope that someone can help me.

    Thank you
    John

You will need to manually change the exclusions when you going on a trip. There isn't a way to change automatically.

  • Backup of the computer in Vista Ultimate fails on i/o device error

I'm doing a PC Backup in Vista Ultimate for a 5000KS of external WD USB Drive with plenty of space, System Manager is working properly. The backup gets about 85% and fails with the message "device i/o error (0x800745D)". What is going on? Acronis True Image 11 backup on the same drive without complaining.

    Hi Dick715,

We have to run a disk check to solve this problem, to do a disc check follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start, type cmd in the start search box, right-click cmd.exe in the list programs and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    2. at a command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:

    CHKDSK X: /R

Note: In this command, x is a placeholder that represents the drive letter of the volume you want to check.

    3. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.

    4. close all applications and restart the computer.

Note: When you restart, Windows checks the drive for errors, and then Windows starts.

    5. after the computer restarts, repeat steps 1 through 4 for the other volume and try the backup operation again.

  • With the help of Rescue and Recovery to make backups of 3 different machines

Hello, I have three laptop Thinkpad T400, X 61 and R61i. I want to back up by using an external hard drive. The HD is divided into three partitions, the smallest of X 61, the middle of R61i and most importantly - for T400. I backed up all my laptops in the appropriate partitions (base backups), but now, so I want to make partial backups, they go to the bigger partition (for the T400). Is it possible (and how) do R & R to always use the same partition for each laptop while safeguarding it?

A few notes, to respond to your previous post:

    (1) Sysprep is used by administrators to deploy and image system to other machines. Basically, the system starts standalone RNR and save the image (drive C and the same HARD drive partitions) on the service partition.  Comment enumeration pleasure has to with additional partitions on the C drive HDD.  For sysprep to work, additional partitions must be of type Extended. The windows PE, is a windows "skimpy" PRE environment. For win7, the EP is based on Vista with a small set of win7 features added.  Thie PE is used for developers (as Lenovo) to install their systems.

    * None of this applies to a user at home like you and me *.

    (2) the logic used in the RNR for the GUI vs bent the advanced GUI are DIFFERENT.

Example: the user has part C, D and E on C disk HARD drive.  Uses advanced parms to set backup (local) to go to E drive.

If the backup through the advanced graphical interface, drive E is honored.

If the backup is performed through simple GUI, the partition with the largest free space is used.

Note: using the Second HARD drive don't offer NO choice to designate a partition target of \RRbackups.

    (3) view of backups.  It's clearly too.

When a backup is performed, and RNR is locked on him, it will REFRESH the registry entries for the content of backup.dats in the \rrbackups folder. Subsequent backups of view will probably be read from the registry. That is to say no record of reloading. Simpified mistletoe might once again, just to use the registry, the locks of GUI in the new backup folder.

    (4) your letter removal/restoration

a: I have no idea how autonomous RNR will react to the 3 folders on the second \rrbackup, IE the part 1, 2, 3.

    b. If rnr backups locked in the wrong \rrbackup folder, you will have a total mess. A symptom of this: you take a basic (full) backup, and the next backup, which should be an incremental, is actually another full backup.  This error could occur if you deleted the wrong letters.

    (5) you have a mess.

If I save it again this PC, R & R is a point instead of a differential backup<>

It would take a lot of work on you end to look in the backup files.  Not worth it.

Again, the simpifed GUI backup use different logic. He likes the larger partition.

From what you say, you used simplified and got the base of the machine backup 3 all go good part 1, 2, 3.

Somewhere in this mess, he locked in a \rrbackups without a base backup folder and took another backup.

    who knows.

    Release notes:

    Review 4
    ----------------
Location of backup changes when you select a smaller partition through the advanced interface of the Rescue and Recovery program.

In the advanced interface of the Rescue and Recovery program, you select a partition more small capacity on your local hard drive as the backup location. Then, you switch to the simplified interface to create the backup. However, the backup is created on the partition with the highest capacity.

To resolve this problem, back up your system in the advanced interface of the Rescue and Recovery program after you have selected the backup location.

    ===

The solution is the cleanest way to follow. I would always use the GUI advanced for now on.

  • Veeam Backup and the Mode of free features

    People,

I started a support with Veeam call after the installation of their new backup and replication 4.1.1 after getting an error "free ESXi is not supported" after some troubleshooting tech me determine what level of license Info Service is listed, ESXFull, or ESXBasic. After determining that it is ESBasic they advise that we are 'free' feature mode and call the VMWare licenses.

I'm missing somethgin here, I thougth all ESXi were free, a matter that deals with this and how do I get this to ESXFull?

    Thank you

Free ESXi is free. It can be licensed for use with the rest of the vSphere product suite. In free mode, there are several things that are not available, including the storage API. Veeam backup uses the storage API, which means that you must have a licensed version of ESXi. The simplest version of a bundle under license is http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/buyvsphere-small-business.html

You can edit vmx file while the virtual machine is running? And is it safe?

    Hello

Moved to the forum of the Virtual Machine and the guest operating system.

If you edit the VMX while the virtual machine is powered on change is not levied until the power off then power on (not reboot) and there is a good chance that the change will be deleted when turn you off the system. So it is not safe to do so.

  • Catch22, how to change the settings for VirtualCenter, running as a virtual machine

I'm running as a virtual machine under ESX 3.5 VirtualCenter. I want to change the setting of this virtual machine, but of course, the only way to change many parameters of a virtual computer is to stop the guest OS. I just changed the type of NIC on all my virtual machines, except VirtualCenter, using this procedure:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1007195

I want to change the adapter for VirtualCenter to improve vmxnet as well. How to work around the Catch22 needing VC running to change virtual machines but requiring judgment VC to edit it?

    Laughing out loud

Shut down the virtual computer. Open the VI Client and instead of the IP address / hostname of the VC Server enter the IP address / hostname of the ESX host. You must use an ESX account for it! If in doubt try then the VM VC is still under way.
