Can I migrate vista windows of a dead to a new machine?

Recently, the hard disk went on a laptop I bought in 2007.  I had been running Windows Vista.

To replace it, I'm Mid-building a new PC, and I'm price of BONES.  Like almost everyone, I would like to avoid paying the full cost for windows 7.  So, while it may be a long shot, my question is this: is it possible to switch the license for Vista my old machine, death has a brand new (for the purposes of backup and just get the W7 upgrade)?
Sorry if this is silly and my thanks!

If your copy of Vista comes with the laptop, then no, you cannot migrate to another computer.  Windows OEM copies are related to the motherboard of the computer, they are provided with and may not be used on another.  If you bought a copy of Vista retail, then you can transfer.

If you create a custom computer, you will need to purchase a copy of the full license of Windows for that.  Do not buy an OEM System Builder copy from a retailer like Amazon or NewEgg.  OEM SB packs are for custom builders, selling computers to customers.  A person who built his own computer is not a builder of sytem as defined by the Microsoft license program.  Such a person is a do-it-yourselfer.  The correct license is retail.

Don't buy Windows 7 on a discounter in line, the Amazon Marketplace or eBay.  The internet is full of counterfeits produced in China.  They are very good imitations, as you can see in this video:

  • I want to move my hard drive from a computer with a motherboard dead to a newer machine. The activation process for Windows XP SP3 failed.

I want to move my hard drive from a computer with a motherboard dead to a newer machine.  The activation process failed.  How can I get the operating system XP Professional sp3 reactive?  I have the code original and other info.

original title: Moving the death machine drive

    Hello CarrolScott,

The activation problem arose because the hardware on your current computer does not match that of the hardware on the machine whose mother is dead.

The best option for the reactivation is to use the telephone line. This, unfortunately, is automated and may refuse to turn on your system; However, don't despair just rest on the line after the automated atcivation crossed its procedure and you will be transferred to a real person. Tell this person you've done, and it should be able to help activate.

  • How can I transfer my Windows XP from one computer brand new without the CD it came with?

I'll buy a new hard drive for my computer and I want to put Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Acrobat on the new hard drive.  I have the product id for XP but not the product key or CD.  Can someone tell me how to proceed?

The product key for Windows is on the computer. However, don't do you much good if you don't have a way to install Windows. You must have the product key and installation for Office 2007, which is separated from Windows Media. You install Adobe Acrobat your media and product key, they sent you when you bought it.

  • How can I change Vista from an old computer to a new one?

    Greetings,

I have a copy of Vista, initially purchased several years ago and I would switch its installation of an old computer to a new laptop.  Chatting with a representative of the Microsoft Customer Service (online), I was told that since Vista is no longer actively supported, I have to buy a support package for $99 to do this.  In other words, I bought Vista originally for over $ $100 and now has to pay a surcharge of $99 to remove a computer and install it on another.

This is not acceptable!  Can I erase the hard drive where Vista was originally installed (Macintosh) and then legally install Vista on my new laptop computer?

    Thanks for your suggestions!

Dave - * address email is removed from the privacy *.

    Hello

Of course, this is not acceptable and I don't know where they get their information.

Are you sure it was Microsoft you chatted with?

You are missing an important piece of information for us well.

The Vista you have purchased a license of selling retail or a system builder OEM license?

If it's an OEM System Builders license, it is linked to the where it was first installed.

    __________________________________________

But if it's a retail license, you can install it on another computer as long as uninstall you it from the Mac.

That's essentially what must be respected with a retail license:

"One license of operating system retail, you buy and install yourself, are allowed to be transferred to another machine.

"And retail licenses also can be installed on a machine at one time."

    __________________________________________

And Vista has extended support until 2017, then there are still updates are published for safety and Performance and old updates and Service Packs are still available.

  • Can I use my Windows 7 key refuse on a new computer

After 4 years on a new laptop with Windows XP preinstalled, it was able to live usage conditions useage, being that student on a level 3 course HE computer is an essential tool.

When Windows 7 is released, I don't a not jump directly into it as Windows XP always lived to its needs, but a few months after Windows 7 was released, it was time to update in order to track performance and safety more with Windows 7, offering more features that it was difficult not to be upgraded. So I got out a got a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit and 64-bit). After that installation of the difference was clear, it was worth the investment.

Recently, this computer gave up finally to go and has since been replaced by a custom built Tower currently using Windows XP Professional SP3 but it simply not the same thing, because once you upgrade to 7 you never want to go back and still currently the object of a student full time I could opt to buy a 2nd key at the student rate, but why give up what works already?

More to the point it will be possible to use the same product key to activate Windows 7 even on the new computer? I understand also manual activation may be required.

Yes, you can transfer your license of Windows 7 to the new computer, but you may need to reactivate by phone:

How to activate Windows 7 manually (activate by phone)

    1) click Start and in the search for box type: slui.exe 4

    (2) press the ENTER"" key.

    (3) select your "country" in the list.

    (4) choose the option "activate phone".

    (5) stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

    (6) explain your problem clearly to the support person.

  • Slimline Office 260-a020: install Windows 7 Home Premium on a new machine Windows 10?

Just got a new HP 260 - A020, but I used Windows 10 library for 3 weeks in the meantime and have no use for the clumsy, stupid thing, overworked or otherwise for his reputation as a Big Brother. (also software security 3 deep at the top of the paranoia of pull-the-plug, had a hint of malware, so Win7 is a lot never secure enough for a few years).
... The old hard drive is always good, so I intend to drop that in an external case to recover files from 2-3, that have not been backed up, which first use as a boot drive, then for the time being that the backup with Windows7 on the machine itself.

... EXCEPT - warnings of Best Buy Sales & Geek Squad, as well as messages here on how a 'modern' machine may not recognize the old drivers - LaserJet not only but things such as video, network, disk HARD, USB etc.
... But in the months before July 29, I've seen a hundred proposals to put 7 or 10 on a disk/partition bootable by means of hedging against the transition and never a mention of this problem. If a native Win7 machine works very well with Win10 and new drivers but not the reverse?  or download Win10 preserve the old drivers?

    Hello:

There are too many unknowns to give you an answer about your plans.

I looked at the specs for this PC and I do not see why he cannot run W7 if you have a W7 64-bit installation disc and product key.

You will need to enable legacy in BIOS mode and disable secure startup to launch W7.

Looks like you can get all the drivers you need directly from websites of the manufacturer of the item (AMD and Realtek) and the driver for the card from another PC of HP wireless.

The unknowns about what you want to do...

Most likely simply plopping the other PC in the new disc it will not work.  Startup files are different, etc..

Then there are potential legal problems...

If the hard disk that you plan to install in the new PC has an OEM operating system, it is forbidden to transfer the OEM of the computer operating system, it was originally installed in, to another PC.

An OEM operating system is the one that came with a PC when you bought it (like Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.).

Only, you would be able to transfer an operating system of detail from one PC to another.

In summary: this PC yourself running W7?  Probably, Yes.

Can you put the hard drive currently with W7 top in your new PC and expect it to work?  Probably not.

  • Windows Vista for my Lenovo dead discs works on a tailor-made machine?

    Exclusive Vista upgrade?

I buy computer then receive the disk to upgrade to vista by computer of dead mail so I install this drive to vista computer I am building and the network is the only thing that doesn't work do not. motherboard provider said that I can not use this drive to vista in a new computer because it was designed to run only at the death of lenovo computer? They claim that this vista installation will damage the bios on the new board.destroying of MOM any time. I have many Microsoft products with all win95 to win7 keys included with purchased pc retail box disks, I have built 4 computers that are dead, I have 2 drives just used retail vista disc xp to skip the step of upgrading from xp. So! This attack of the bios is true Vista? Or is it more likely that the lan on the new motherboard is not good as I believe. I used a wireless network adapter to get internet and I can't find the best driver for the LAN is installed, but the LAN does not work? I don't want to just start over and install xp, but I'll do it because it is just a motherboard of the secondary computer at low price of $60. I bought a new computer with win7. I just want to know if an owner of Vista drive can corrupt the bios?

I want to know if I need to Flash the bios because the guy said tech vista corrupts the bios of the motherboard because it is owned by the hardware store on the old computer, who died?

Using the wrong Setup disk will not damage the BIOS.

You only need to update your BIOS, if it is not compatible with Windows 7, which doesn't happen very often.
