Can I restore my user folder once I selected hidden?

Accidentally, I chose the 'hidden' button when I was watching my user folder properties, and now all the information has disappeared from my office and other issues.  I was wondering if the information is still in my computer?

Hi LisaGon

Open Windows Explorer.

Click on organize / folders and Search Options / view tab.

Select drives, folders and Show Hidden files .

Click Apply/OK.

Navigate to the C:\Users\your name folder. Click on file and select Properties. Remove the check mark from the hidden option.

Kind regards.

  • Can I restore my user account XP to its previous state?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I contracted the Trojan antispywarebot horse week last on the foxsports.com website.  He hijacks the desktop, displaying a message that your computer is infected. I knew it was I have virus as the name of the program it asked me to download looked sketchy. I did the following:

1 Ran free version of Malwarebytes who caught the virus. That doesn't remove the virus itself, because when I click on the desktop icons, I either get a message that rundll32 is missing or the dialog box that asks you what program I want to use to open the application. However, the user interface for the virus no longer appears.

    2. Ran system restore. It displays a message that the system could not be restored to the point that I selected.

3 in Ran safe mode system restore.  It only gave me the restore points once infection has occurred. What good is that? I used the restore of the system before so I know it was working properly at any given time.

At this point, I cannot run programs in my nonadministrator account and cannot use restoring the system to a date, I know that my computer has not been infected by this virus. The administrator account is fine but I don't want to use it for web browsing, because I'm still worse off if that is infected. I created another nonadministrator account to use at the same time, but I want to get the account I was using when the computer has been infected work since this is when I start all my applications.  Someone in the community has some ideas to remedy at hand using the XP repair?

Also, can someone in the community to recommend a good book for the Windows XP operating system problems? I would like to know how to fix this problem on mine within a reasonable period of time.

What is the Doug Knox fix you have running?

Go to this site WWW by Doug Knox:

    http://www.dougknox.com/

On the left, click on the Win XP fixes, file Association fixed and read the instructions at the top of the page.

Download the EXE File Association Fix on your desktop, unzip the file and apply it by following the instructions at the top of the page, then to restart and test.

If not, you need to run it or run it again.

You get to a command prompt:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window, and then navigate to your system32 folder by typing this command:

    CD \windows\system32

See if you can open the Control Panel System applet by entering this command:

    Control sysdm.cpl

    Describe the results.

If you get a rundll32 error, see if the file is actually missing or not, enter this command:

    Rundll32.exe dir

For SP2, the rundll32.exe file should report with 31 744 bytes (it's different for SP3).

While you're at the command prompt, enter the following command:

    path

Be very sure you see at least something like this:

    ... % SystemRoot%\system32;c:\windows\system32;

SystemRoot is the nickname for the Windows installation folder.

  • How can I restore deleted user account?

During a session to help with Intuit on the installation of a product update, it became necessary to set up a new user in Windows XP Tablet Edition.  In the process of all other user accounts have been deleted. How to restore a user account?  The new account is an administrator account.

    Hobler,
If the user account has been deleted you can not restore with the help of a program of backup\restore.  If you have another drive and that you have backed up your hard drive then user accounts should be part of your backup.  You just go through the restore process for items you need.
If you do not have a backup, and then they are gone. Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers

  • My C drive is nearly full, can I send the 'Users' folder to 'C' on another disk "D"?

I am usiinf Windows 7 Professional, my 'C' drive is an SSD with 'only' 56 Gig. My hard drive "D" is a one terabyte with more than 900 GB of space left on it.

My file 'Users' is 13 Gig.

    DAVID BROOKER

I don't think you can move the Users folder, but you can disable Hibernate and move your pagefile to free space, and you can move your Documents, music, pictures and videos folders.  You can uninstall some programs, and then reinstall them using the custom option and put them on the D: drive too.

    Good luck.

As you have a pop email account these emails would be stored only on your computer if you do not have the setting of 'leave messages on the server.

Since they are only on the computer, usually it is advisable to perform regular backups of the profile folder. If you have a copy, you can copy paste the missing file again in:
    dossiers.../. Thunderbird/xu1iz8lo.default/mail/local

Make sure Thunderbird is closed before doing this.

If the emails are still on the server, you can get a full redownload everything on the server. To do this, you need to remove the file 'popstate.dat' of relevant mail account from the profile e-mail account. Thunderbird must be closed before doing this.

  • How can I change the name of the user folder on drive C in Microsoft Vista?

Hello. My father bought me a laptop about a year ago and when he started, he was the administrator. I want to change it because it is mine. I went into the Panel and changed the administrator.

When you start the laptop, when you try and you enter in you must click on the name and photo. That's my name.
When you open start, my name is there on the right with its own content of contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, Favorites, links, music, images, games, videos and research.

The problem is when I open my C drive and go to users, there is a folder with the name of my father and the public. If you open the name of my father, it contained contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, Favorites, links, music, images, games, videos and research.

I tried to change it again via Control Panel and just try to rename the folder. None of those who worked.
How can I change my name? Is it still possible?

    Thanks for your help.

Your father apparently just rename her user account with your name. As you have discovered, you cannot change a user account by changing just the name. Simply by changing the name will do a cosmetic change only and does not affect the underlying files/folders in the profile. If it is important for you:

    1. from an administrator account, rename the account she had originally. Then create the new Standard * user account named in the way that you want and at least an additional administrator account. Call the last 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar.
2 log in to the new Standard user account once if the profile of the files/folders are created and then connect to CompAdmin.
    3. now go to control panel > system > advanced > user profile > settings *.
    4. you will see where you can copy user accounts. Copy the old account to the new from there. Use her browse to select your new account (C:\Users\newaccount).
5 log in to the new account correctly named and make sure all your stuff is here and it works as you want. When you are satisfied, you can log on and CompAdmin and remove the old account from the control panel > user accounts.

    * In the course of running as a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. You don't want to run as administrator for your daily work. Keep CompAdmin for your administrative account and use it only for the elevation and emergency situations.

    * If you do not want to bother copying old misnamed account settings, you can skip this bit and simply copy your data to the new user account instead.

If you want to access your account again, correctly named automatically, follow these steps:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null). MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!
