  My title says it all. I have an old HP laptop that they do not send to restore the disc more (I don't know yet I had one; his old laptop from my brother) and I have an installation disc for my new PC. I have a Windows XP Home edition SP2 installation disc. However, as the hard drive of my laptop broke down, I don't know what version of windows it was. I think it should have been an OEM version and the sticker says it was Windows XP Home Edition.

  Unless you are lucky enough to know someone who has a generic OEM drive, which you can borrow, I don't see a practical solution for you.  I advise you to spend the money to buy one, even if you could find one to buy from a reliable source (not eBay!).  Although a generic OEM disc should work with your product key, there is no guarantee that it will work with your product key.

  If your laptop can be retrieved through a restore partition, and you can't borrow a disc that will work with your product key, then you have pretty much exhausted all reasonable or practical options.

  I finally did! I borrowed a copy of a generic OEM drive, through activation and it is!

Say now, I returned the drive OEM back (don't want to make an illegal copy) and want to be able to use my current system installed to generate a system disk that will allow me to avoid all the problems I've had up to now. What would you recommend? I've read a few articles on other forums (I did some research!) but is a little confusing. I hope you could help.

  This is the product key that doesn't count installation material.  However, the computer must be able to support the version of Windows that is on the DVD.  For example, 32 - bit or 64 - bit.  invariably, you need spend a little time looking for specific drivers too the web site of the manufacturer.

  This is a forum for office, but given that the answer is short and simple, I believe that nobody will mind if we make an exception.

  If your installation disc is in Siena, no problem.  You must match the edition (home to home, Pro to Pro, Media Center, Media Center, etc.),and that you need to match the type of license (full retail full retail or upgrade of retail to upgrade of retail or OEM to OEM).

  Service Pack level is more important when you use a product key XP Pro SP3...

  For Windows 7, take one of the downloads MSDN and remove the ei.cfg from the image file, then burn the image.

  This will then install any of the Windows 7 editions - Starter to Ultimate (out of business) database. It can also work with key retail or OEM.

  There are no separately installation program. You are not alone with this opinion and no you don't have to use any installed stuff. I remove also all the stuff, I didn't need.

  Install the OS by using the recovery CD and then download all the updates from Microsoft to ensure that everything is up to date and remove all the stuff that you don't need. Believe me I do the same.

  Just for example - I have a satellite that comes with Windows XP Home edition and I did follow:
  1. installed OS using supplied recovery DVDs
  2 installed all updates from Microsoft
  3 deleted applications, I didn't need
  4. install all the applications I need for work (office, Nero and so on)
  5 installed Norton Ghost
  6 created my own recovery image

  Now I can reinstall my OS and after 30 minutes, everything is there. In the case of some virus or any other strange question, I install new OS (on the C partition). All the data saved on the D partition are still there and can be used after installation of the image.

  It is not possible to download Windows 7 on a DVD. If you want to install Windows 7 on the computer, you must purchase a Microsoft installation disc.

  You would think that a Microsoft Support engineer would know what is available in the Microsoft store.  But maybe not.

  If your b/f to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7, you can buy Windows 7 directly from Microsoft and download.  You can download an ISO file which can be burned to a DVD if you have a software that can make this engraving.  Of course, with your b / f machine works do not, you will not be able to use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine if your computer is capable of running Windows 7.
