can restore us a vcenter Server inventory using vpxd.cfg only

problem: restoring Vcenter server using vpxd.cfg file only

No, you can't, vCenter inventory information is saved in vCenter database and not in vpxd.cfg.

vpxd.cfg is the only configuration file for vCenter

  • VCenter Server (standard) useful with ESXi is free?

Trying to decide what, if anything, to actually buy VMware.  The free ESXi product license is... enough.  I would really like to central management, backup or read/write capabilities with rcli (piracy without installation - I think I said that correctly).

My question is this.  There is a VERY big jump in $$$ of the products beforehand essentials range or better (I think that the Standard line is unnecessary).  I currently have 5 VMware servers (2 under Server Linux 2.0 on server newish hardware, each, 2 ESXi 4 server about 4 VM running on old jobs as each House a unique VM (due to higher disk IO) and ESXi 3.5 server running on 32-bit with 1 VM hardware).

In any case - with a mixture of mission critical production VM and VM little criticism that don't necessary not to live on a San and puff SAN bandwidth, I'm not sure I want to limit myself to 3 physical machines.  It would be probably enough for the next 5 to 10 years, but it would affect my SAN strategies and I have to buy at least 1 or 2 new costly servers.

So I thought that maybe just get the vCenter Server for centralized management would work.  I always have 2 or 3 more enjoyable new servers ESXi 4 on the San with mission critical servers, while continuing to have 2-3 of older machines with individual local readers VM (I like to keep virtual for purposes of disaster recovery for) running.

I can't find any information on knowledge if it would work, and it would offer benefits etc..

You cannot add free ESXi to vCenter. Adding a host requires the inside the host vCenter Agent license.

    Sorry about that.

  • Can of POS used with Vmware vCenter Server 5 Standard license

    Hello team,

    Accroding to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2016565

WTP is supplied with vSphere Essentials more and more.

I searched but did not meet solid information where he explains when licensed some don't need us to buy additional licenses for new features / applications, etc.
I'm new to Vmware licenses hierarchy. We have Vmware vCenter Server Standard 5 license.
Please point me to a URL that contains the hierarchy of Vmware licenses .

    Thank you much in advance.
    Niraj

You can use vCenter Server Standard 5 licenses for POS. Everything we have features such as (profile of HA, DRS, FT, VDP, host, DVS etc.) you don't need to worry about the virtual server license Center. You must use the correct license vsphere host. But don't forget to think about some virtual server edition Center can handle some vsphere hosts.

vCenter server 5 Essentials can manage only vSphere Essentials Plus or vSphere Essentials.

vCenter Server Standard 5 licensecan eat only vSphere vSphere Enterprise and vSphere companies plus standards.

You can activate the functionality of POS with vSphere Essentials Plus then you will need to use vCenter server 5 Essentials. If you use vCenter server standard for vSphere Essentials Plus so it give error or warning for violation of editing.

  • Impossible to connect to vCenter Server 5.5 using the vSphere Client

    Hello

I'm trying to configure VMware Lab home using the link below and I have reached a stage where I need to connect to vCenter Server using the vSphere client.

    http://boerlowie.WordPress.com/2011/12/13/building-the-ultimate-vSphere-lab-part-9-ESXi/

I installed the package of 5.5 full vCenter server using the simple installation option and it includes vCenter server, single sign - on, Webclient vSphere, vCenter server and vCenter Server inventory service. All the the latter is installed on a virtual machine that is running Windows server 2008 R2 guest OS.

Whenever I try to open a session on the vCenter Server uses the vSphere client, one of the following error is displayed.

    1. you do not have the permissions to connect to the server 'vCenter server IP address.

    2. cannot complete the connection incorrect username or password-, this error is visible when I do not specify domain\username domain user name and simply enter the user name.

For the details of the error, please see the screenshots - vSphere_client_1, vSphere_client_2 and vSphere_client_3.

As suggested in the link below, I tried to create an SPN and then set the SPN (Principal of Service name) and the UPN (User Principal name) in the Active Directory identity Source using the web of vSphere client (please see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_2)

    http://vinfrastructure.it/2014/01/issue-in-logging-into-vCenter-server-using-Windows-ad-credentials/

To fix the permission error, I tried to add the domain user to the Administrators group on the server vCenter (see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_1).

However, none of the above-mentioned resolution has worked.

So can someone please help? I am stuck because of this problem and badly need help to move forward.

    Thank you

  • Using VCenter server NTP ok?

We have two hosts, each running 2 VMs Windows 2008. For security reasons, the hosts are on a separate VLAN management that does not have internet access. I advanced and configure NTP on the domain controller VM, for all virtual machines have the correct time. But I really wish that guests have time just too so that timestamps in the newspapers are relevant. I have install the VCenter server (Win2008) to act as an NTP server, and I tested it with my laptop. This works. I told guests to get their time from the VCenter server, because it is the only machine that accesses to the guest VLAN.

My question - is this a good practice? It seems that everyone gives their guests internet access, but it's just another door that you have to keep in my humble OPINION.

I forgot to add - the VCenter is the installer has a NTP client to get his time on the internet.

If you have setup the vCenter correctly in the NTP server (you have done - you have tested) I don't see a problem with that. Most people use either:

    • Public NTP servers, which can work very well, when managed / firewall
    • Internal NTP servers
    • Dedicated time devices

So, no, I don't see a problem here, and if it works for you, it is a good practice. It's also nice to see that you think safety (by not giving guests direct access to a public NTP server) in production environments (?).

  • vCenter Server Upgrade version 5.0 to 5.1

I have 3 vCenter servers (VM) who manage the 3 environments across different sites (Dev/Test/QA, Prod1 and Prod2).

I intend to first upgrade in Dev/Test/QA environment. My Server, DB & MUV vCenter vCenter server resides on the unique virtual computer.

    1. I need to create separate VMS for vCenter Server Inventory Service & MUV.

    2. in a large environment, I have to separate the Server DB & consolidate all instances here? Best practices please.

    3. create separate SSO VM.

To do this, how will be my approach? Can I restore my backups of DB and can be used in the new environment?

Or everything will be totally new configuration?

It will work. Like other components, you have the choice to use SQL Express or a dedicated DB for the SSO server.

  • Problem migrating Vcenter server from the old cluster to the new cluster?

    Hey guys,.

Just came across this situation, and I don't know what to do. I pass my vcenter server older glomerulus with hosts of esx4.0, to a more recent cluster with hosts of esxi4.1. The material of host machines are different generations, and vmotion don't migrate vcenter because of the cpu sets between cluster mismatch. If I could turn off the virtual machine and migrate it would work, but since it's my vcenter Server I can't do.

Should I restore it on the new cluster?

    Thanks for the suggestions/tips

    Kevin

Connect directly to the ESX host using your client vsphere, vCenter vm shutdown, vCenter remove inventory, then go to the new host, browse the data store on the vCenter vm is, and add the vCenter Server inventory.

This assumes that the same storage is presented to both hosts.  If this isn't the case, you will need to use winscp or something similar to copy the files from the virtual machine.

  • VCenter server SQL P2V

I think I already know the answer to this, but... My current vCenter database resides on a physical SQL Server, I want to virtualize this server. Now, I can not p2v that vcenter box because I have to stop SQL services in order to make the clone so I should also close the vcenter. So I think I use converter only support and copy the new virtual machine directly on one of my esx hosts, once its done raising the new sql box, then add it to vcenter inventory?

Why not simply create a virtual machine, install SQL, then detach and attach the SQL DB from the old to the new instance.  Or even better.  Perform a backup on the old instance and restoration on the new server of DB.  This way your one stop for vCenter is to change the ODBC connection, then restart your vCenter server.

    Also, here's a good KB

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/7960893

.. .or as you say, if the DB server has more that just your VCDB, stop the vCenter Server Service use standalone converter, converts it to an ESX host, and then put on the virtual machine.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

  • How to manually change the ports for HTTP on the server vCenter Server

    Hello Experts,

We have Windows Server 2008 SP2 machine where we v5.1 installed with other SSO components, inventory services, vCenter Server and Update Manager.

So we went from SSO, the inventory services and vCenter Server fine however, vCenter Server has stopped working. While we were to modernize SSO, the service could not start after the upgrade and the recd suite error "Service VMware KDC service could start.". So, we found the article on the VMware site that said port 88 to cause the problem. To find out more by using the netstat command, we found vpxd.exe used port 88. That is why, we stopped this service and proceeded to the upgrade of the SSO. The upgrade is complete following the inventory service and vCenter Server. While we were upgrading vCenter Server, we found that port 88 was used for HTTP communication.

So we wasted on the use of the port. The upgrade has been completed successfully, however, we can not connect to vCenter server using vSphere Client version 5.1 or 5.5. We even tried to start the VMware VirtualCenter server using the services.msc console and it failed.

So we assume the port changes happened during upgrade of the SSO meets the HTTP port by vCenter server usage. We need help on how to manually change the ports for HTTP on the vCenter server.

Suggestions forward. This problem is with the production servers.

    Thank you

    Karan

This has been resolved... port has been changed manually and works very well.

  • [HELP] SMV disappeared after restart of the host - 5.5 ESXI, Vcenter Server to the same host

I restarted the ESXI using classic Vsphere Client. Now, all virtual machines have disappeared. I tried to connect with Vsphere Client and workstation and the list is empty. I can't access the Vcenter server since it is a virtual machine that resides in the home.

The data store is a local disk. The data store is still there and the amount of disk space used is correct. I don't see the virtual machines in the inventory. I have re-installed ESXI 5.5, refreshed of store data and what not, there is nothing there. I am freaking out and don't know what to do.

EDIT: I am able to navigate the data store manually by creating the new virtual machine and select the existing virtual machine following this guide but I'm not sure what is the reason for which the files would be missing or corrupt

    http://techhead.co/VMware-ESX-how-to-easily-recreate-a-missing-or-corrupt-vmx-file/

When you browse the data store you see the virtual machine and their records?

If you see the virtual computer files, you can open the folder, right click on the .vmx file and select Add to the inventory. who will get your VM in the inventory.
