can someone tell me how to get windows 7 to make a sound when I get a new email?

entered in the control panel and the ambient sounds and of course email notification is checked and the test worked fine.  However when I sent an email to my windows live account and gmail the computer never make a sound?

You will not get an alert for new mail unless you have a mail client, such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, etc. installed on your computer. It does work for web-based e-mail.
