Cannot completely remove "Windows.old"?

I upgraded my second computer a couple of days from XP to Windows 7 Home Premium Full install and I tried to delete the folder windows.old the right way and he left the folder and files of SecuROM. Someone suggested trying to remove in 'safe mode', but that no longer works. The files are not too big, they are only 16 KB, but it would be nice to get rid of them.

I also tried to delete the file in C: and it stands up and says this: this item is not found. It is no longer in C:\. Check the location of the item and try again.

I found a solution and it worked. It was for Vista, but has also worked for me. I'm so happy to get rid of this thing!

At the elevated command prompt, I entered in the following:

For the withdrawal of the windows.old folder after a vista installation and an installation of Windows 7.

del /S /Q /F C:\windows.old

rmdir /S /Q C:\windows.old

The information was found here:

  • How can I completely remove windows xp pro network connection screen

Several months ago, I bought a used computer. It is a HP Compaq apparently set on foot for the tuition fees online with K12.org. It came with any disks, and I had an awful time trying to get the login screen for the computer network without having to use it. I managed to find and disable the Client for Microsoft networks according to previous research, but the screen would still pop up. I used the forums for info I would need to get the thing to only us force hitting an "OK" button so that we would not enter a password every time. Now the screen, which allows to popup, will not be shown or only appears intermittently during startup and Windows shows "Starting Windows" and everything crashes and hangs without taking me to the "Welcome" screen

This problem started last night. I'd really like to get this thing to use it without worry.

Any help you offer is greatly appreciated.

Hanging to the startup problem is certainly indicative of a larger problem.

In your case, I highly recommend that you completely reinstall Windows on your machine.  Most of the HP/Compaq machines have a recovery partition which will reinstall Windows on condition "as-bought.  To access this, when you start and the first HP or Compaq startup screen appears, you should see at the bottom of the screen a touch that will put you in the recovery mode.  Press this button quickly because you don't have a lot of time.  Follow the prompts to completely wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows.  (Make sure that you back up all of the necessary files first).  If you do not have this key, and then connect to the HP site and download the manual for your specific computer model.

If you cannot reinstall Windows, then try a system restore to a point in time before that you had your boot-hanging problem.

  • Cannot find the Windows.old folder in my drive and therefore not able to go back to XP to 7.

I read the article on "How to get back to a previous version of Windows" : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/
I use Windows 7 Ultimate beta and found this irritating and much lower than XP. He has a lot of bugs and compatibility issues. It crashes every two hours and I lost many of my personal. So, I wanted to go back to my old XP by a clean uninstall of 7. When I inserted the CD at BOOT XP and pressed a button (as guest), he did not. He just started normally.
Then I inserted within 7, but the gray tab XP installation ! Then I looked far from a solution of Microsoft and went to the link (above). It is said that I need the windows.old file back. But I'm not. I searched all my readers but could not find it. When I typed windows.old in the pavement of research (to the c:\ drive), 4 files are released: file:///D:/Windows/winsxs/x86_microsoft-windows-a..oldertool.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_en-us_111994699d72a71f/ two other similar to the present and a MUI file.
Does this mean I do not have the windows.old file and therefore cannot go back to XP. Windows 7 will be released soon and I use the RC version. and so my version will expire soon. WHAT CAN I DO NOW?
If there isn't a way, I'm sorry to say that I would be looking forward to the next new Google Chrome OS. I love Microsoft Windows for their sincere services. Please help me and do not let me down...

The only time where you can roll to an earlier version of Windows during installation is when configuring real itself. He has no other choice after installing Windows 7 to return to your previous installation within the OS itself. You have manually will reinstall it.

    Hello

    Thanks for the update.

I would like you to try the following steps:

Method 1: run Disk Cleanup and check if the problem is resolved.

The disk cleanup tool lets you free up space on your hard disk by searching your disk for files that you can safely remove. You can choose to delete some or all of the files.

Please visit this link to learn how to run the disk cleanup utility:

    Delete files using disk cleanup
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=Windows-8

Note: these steps also apply to Windows 8.1 Overview.

Method 2: run SFC scan and verify if the issue is resolved.

The sfc/scannow command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions. When the analysis is complete, the System File Checker tool indicates whether integrity violations were found. If integrity violations are detected, the System File Checker tool difficulty integrity violations.

Follow these steps to scan SFC:

    a. press the Windows key + R and type cmd in the Run dialog box.

    b. right-click on the command prompt and select run as administrator.

    c. type sfc/scannow , and then press enter.

NOTE: It can take some time to finish the race.

Please let us know the status of the issue.

  • Safe to remove "Windows.old"?

After reading all of the similar queries about 'Safe to delete Windows.old', I'm still not sure and would appreciate any constructive help.

Before you reinstall Windows 7, I copied all my files, data, etc. on an external hard drive. After re-installation of Windows 7 and recovering an external hard drive, my drive "c" shows, among many other issues, ' Windows (19.5 GB - 87 900 files & 17 512 records) and "Windows.old" (100 GB-182 630 files & records 28 412). I understand that it is necessary, before deleting "Windows.old", to ensure that all records etc. inside are included in the new (?) "Windows", but it seems a very important task. Some of the folders etc. in "Windows.old" I recognize as obsolete or unnecessary and would be deleted manually, but these are relatively numerous.

AM I correct in this assumption, or is there, I hope, a shortcut?

No no no.... you do not have need of the old folder at all.  Your system doesn't have it.  It is there only as a convenience to you, the user.  Just in case where you might have had some of your personal files or anything else you want to get to it (for example the emails that have been stored in your Inbox before you reinstalled).

If you do not need anything, whether it is safe to delete.

If you are still not sure: you can always just move it to the Recycle Bin for a few weeks. If nothing comes that you discovered that you need, you can simply empty the trash.

Yes - the uninstall process is controlled by the ininstaller provided with the third party program.  Windows doesn't do anything for you.  It simply allows third-party vendors use the register and place their uninstall information in such a place you see in Add / Remove programs to call their uninstall program.

Use Revo Uninstaller.  Use the trial of the PRO version and make the most aggressive/careful option.

  • cannot completely remove the Photosmart 2600 software

    Hello

I'm helping someone with a HP Photosmart 2610 (all-in-one).  It is installed on the current computer for about 3 years and working fine.  From (probably) a few days ago when they hit on the printer, the scan button it says that the software is not installed.  I went to the HP solutions Center scanning settings and hit restore default settings.  It is then carried to the top of the list of applications to scan from the printer, but when you have chosen one that he said that he could not communicate with the computer.  Then, I thought that the best thing to do is to uninstall/reinstall the software.  I tried to do, but the software will not uninstall.  If I click on deleted on it in Add/Remove Programs, that looks like it is running for a second, but just stays there.  I looked for a removal utility but fails.  Any suggestions?

Out of the hard drive was going bad, I replaced, reloaded Windows and everything is fine.
