Cannot convert physical machines to virtual

I'm trying to convert a physical machine to using 'Converter Standalone Client 4.0' virtual ESXi 4.  When the converter is complete, the operating system would not start.   I tried this on 3 different machines to Windows XP and got a different message each time.

1st: I got this error message: FAILED: cannot create a snapshot VSS of the source volumes. Error code: 2147754758 (0 x 80042306).

2nd: I got a black screen with a cursor.  He just sits there and doesn't do anything.

3rd: error loading operating system.

I tried the local processing and conversion of distance.  Each of them with the same result.   What I am doing wrong?

Thank you!

hinzinho,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums.

Make sure that you use Converter 4.0.1 because you convert to ESXi 4.

1st: I got this error message: FAILED: cannot create a snapshot VSS of the source volumes. Error code: 2147754758 (0 x 80042306).

Take a read through this thread: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1320104

2nd: I got a black screen with a cursor. He just sits there and doesn't do anything.

If you went to IDE on IDE physical box with the virtual machine.  It is in the release notes:

http://www.VMware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html#97

3rd: error loading operating system

It not in fact generated an error message during conversion?  Would you be able to provide logs of converter if she missed.  In the contrary case, we will need to know what has been selected in the wizard and a description of the source system with a screenshot of disk management.

As side note, send only one issue per thread.  It is best to separate the questions for people seeking answers to their problems and allows you to assign points to those who help on individual issues.

HM, looking again at the partition incriminated, it's actually a swap partition. It should be pretty harmless to call disable, delete the partition, re-create it again with the right size and call swapon. However, although there is a change in the disk partition information, a backup is a good idea...

  • Cannot convert the machine to Windows Server 2008

I checked all these forums, but the solutions don't help me at this moment. I'm a bit new to Vmware, I can work around most standard tasks. I'm trying my first conversion of a physical to virtual machine. When I try to let the agent deploy it tells me that it is impossible to connect to the network "XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\ADMIN$".

I have enabled file sharing, I ran the net share and sharing is enabled. Is there something that I could be missing?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum

You need to connect to the source computer as administrator or turn off UAC. You must also configure or disable the firewall.

You can also - install agent converter manually on the source.

  • Cannot convert a machine XP using Standalone 4.0.1

OK, I have been through several discussions on this matter... some hit near what I have and others don't.

I'm trying to P2V a Windows XP SP3 workstation. I initially tried to do with VMWare Workstation 6, but kept getting an unknown error.

I am now using the VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 version.

Whenever I try to start a conversion... it works for about 30 seconds then I get "Failed: failed to create a snapshot of the source volumes VSS." Error 2147754767 (0x8004230F)"" "" "

VSS is enabled and running in services. Different authors VSSAdmin list VSSAdmin List Writers list three shadows returns ' error: 0x8000ffff "I looked at MS KB940184 as suggested by many sites, but that's for when the writers of the list does appear... what mine is.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm at my wits end. Laughing out loud. I can not normally understand such things with this info is on the net but I had no luck so far.

I'll try to take a different approach on this one.

Converter is based on MS VSS Services (and the default MS VSS Writer) to work on a Windows XP computer to virtualize with success there.

The error codes that you get can be cross referenced in the application logs in the event viewer.  The app will simply be listed as vs.

There are a number of small objects, that we must ensure, and some of them seem to have been touched on:

    1. in Services.MSC, make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy service is enabled (auto/manual), and that provide the MS Software Shadow Copy is enabled (manual/automatic)

2 turn off if enabled Simple file sharing

    3. check if you have other backup solutions installed

    4. There may be other errors this converter is meet is likely to VSS fails.

    5. you may need to attempt to repair the VSS manually:

    > Troubleshooting damaged operating system components that cause the conversion to fail

The short and sweet of it, is that it of 99% by Windows error and not a mistake of VMware.  Converter directly reports an error from a component of Windows.

With respect to the collection of newspapers, it is best to click with the right button on the task that failed in the converter and select export logs.  This should put together a package of specific newspapers work.  Most of the GUI logs contain no actual error States we can diagnose of.

The best newspaper to solve problems of will be vmware-converter-agent logs.  It's in the papers - data converter - vmware - app - the profile of the user all the.  In the case of an error in snapshot, it will contain the same information as the GUI converter.

  • Cannot start the physical machine converted to a virtual machine under ESXi 4.0

    Hi all

I have 2 has with the material below

Dell optiplex 755 2.4 Qcore 4 GB of RAM and 160 GB of HARD drive

A performer with ESXi 4.0 other runs with Windows 2003.

I tried to convert physical machine with "Vmware Vcenter converter Stand alone" 4.0.1 build 161434

I used the tool on the source machine and by another machine on the network.

The two process converts the physical machine to a virtual machine successfully without any errors.

After conversion, the virtual machine cannot start, and shows only a small slider that is not flashing too.

The physical machine have a single partition of 160 GB

The space currently used on the physical machine is 26 GB.

I reduced the size of the HARD drive to virtual computer with fix / light available in 40 GB.

point to make here is that the ESX have only 160 GB HDD, so he will not be able to copy all 160 GB because of which I am reducing the 40 GB HARD drive

I converted a few other physical machines with 40 GB HARD drive and they work well after the conversion.

Any sugessions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sunil,

  • Blue screen after converting physical to vm.

    Hello

I use vmware converter and convert the physical server, a VMware server 2.

This server is a single PC with a SATA drive.

    32-bit ST as OS W2K3.

After the conversion has been done, I tried to start the machine (a virtual nine) but I get a blue screen and restart recursive.

    somrthing I can do?

    Thank you.

This means that your system cannot boot from the drive, because it's not having the right set of disk drivers. Your virtual machine's configuration with a SCSI card virtual windows XP isn't the drivers for. The solution is either switch over IDE (not recommended for performance reasons) or to add the drivers yourself.

If you migrate a physical machine to virtual and still have the original machine / machine around you can try to inject drivers before taking the clone. VMware converter normally changes your virtual disk in a free scsi drive (you can check that in the vmx file is generated, it is a text file with the virtual hardware configuration) you can also select use a buslogic scsi adapter.

There is a virtual disk with the required driver for BUSlogic available here: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp

If you can start in safe mode, and then press F6 during the boot and load the driver OR boot from a recovery disk and install the driver then. While you're there, uninstall all old hardware management software because it does not in any case when virtual and can cause all sorts of strange side effects.

Edit: it's too bad you can't see the thread here while meeting. My answer was for XP so that your guest OS seems to be Windows 2003. Windows 2003 should have drivers for LSI already on the operating system drive. Check which virtual SCSI adapter you are using, if it is not clear, please attach the vmware.log of your virtual machine file to this topic.

  • Convert True64 Unix physical machine into a Virtual Machine

    Hi all

I wonder if I can convert the physical machine with True64 Unix virtual machine or not.

    Server version: AlphaServer 4000/5/300 - Tru64 Unix 4.0 D / TruCluster Ver 5.1

    Can anyone suggest me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.

Don't you can't virtualize the machine to the VMware platform.

The reason is that the server uses the alpha microprocessor and not a standard intel x 86/intel x 64 compatible.

You will need to migrate to new hardware or reinstall the server from scratch on a different linux/unix as a platform.

You may be able to migrate the data. It's usually pretty easy on unix-like platforms, but you'd have to testrun this part of course.

    Hope this helps,

    Marius

I used it in a virtual machine and it works fine, as long as there is no special bottlenecks in your virtual machines on the physical environment. I don't think that there is a preferred operating system as long as it is under the supported list.
