Cannot copy Windows.old to an external drive

I did a custom Win XPx64 Win 7 upgrade in which emerged the Windows.old folder on my C: drive. I'm trying to copy Windows.old to the root of a USB external drive using Windows Explorer. The process finishes almost but then the message "Destination path too long. The file names would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location with a shorter path. "The options are Skip and cancel. There is a checkbox "do this for all current items (75 found). There is no indication of specific files causing the problem so I don't know if I can safely ignore these files.

How can I copy Windows.old without having this problem? (I then want to delete Windows.old in C: to free up disk space).

There is no need to backup the Windows.old folder, all you need to do is make sure that your personal files that may exist in have been copied to your personal folders in Windows 7, then delete.

You can then retrieve your personal files from the Windows.old folder and reinstall all of your applications and drivers.

  • I copied the photo library on external drive, and that one photo now shows despite the file being 70 GB.

I had a library in iPhoto on an external HARD drive, and it worked. This is a disc plu so I decided to replace it with a new one that doesn't take much space on my desk. I copied the library through an external DRIVE to another drive, and it seemed to work. However, it now shows that a single photo despite being listed in the file manager as containing more than 70 GB.

I explored a bit further in the file using finder and preview and found many files sorted by date. The photos seem to be all there, but they appear in iPhoto when I switched to this library. Always only one picture appears.

I decided to convert the copied pictures from iPhoto library and it took a lot of time to convert, but the converted library always display just a single photo in Photos when I switch to this library.

I could import all of them individually, but it's a big enough job, if there is a way to get libraries to work correctly.

    Any suggestions?

We need the details - what format is the drive? How is it connected? It serves a TM backup Volume? How you copied the library itself? The library still works fine on the old drive? anything else you can tell us which could help a total strange who don't see you help?

  • Can I format my recovery disk if I copied the recovery on an external drive?

On my Hp computer, I noticed that my recovery was almost full.  So I copied it on an external drive.

My question is; Can I format my recovery if I copied the recovery on an external drive?

    Hello

    No, you can't.

And reading this on the recovery partitions:

It is supposed to have the files it contains, because it contains the files to reinstall the operating system.

Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

    1. If you want to reinstall Windows from in the case of a failure of the system, based on individuals or the keys at startup.

F10 or Alt + F10 or F11 are a couple of different manufacturers use sequences.

You will need to ask your manufacturer for proper sequence.

    2. to make the recovery disks on if your drive hard breaks down, so that you can then reinstall the operating system on a new hard drive.

Also ask them how to make records.

Your D: Recovery Drive is should not be used for backups, defragmented, etc..

There are backups on an external hard drive.

To resolve the problems that have arisen with the recovery D: Partition, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to remove all that has been added to it.

  • Cannot find the Windows.old folder in my drive and therefore not able to go back to XP to 7.

I read the article on "How to get back to a previous version of Windows" : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/
I use Windows 7 Ultimate beta and found this irritating and much lower than XP. He has a lot of bugs and compatibility issues. It crashes every two hours and I lost many of my personal. So, I wanted to go back to my old XP by a clean uninstall of 7. When I inserted the CD at BOOT XP and pressed a button (as guest), he did not. He just started normally.
Then I inserted within 7, but the gray tab XP installation ! Then I looked far from a solution of Microsoft and went to the link (above). It is said that I need the windows.old file back. But I'm not. I searched all my readers but could not find it. When I typed windows.old in the pavement of research (to the c:\ drive), 4 files are released: file:///D:/Windows/winsxs/x86_microsoft-windows-a..oldertool.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_en-us_111994699d72a71f/ two other similar to the present and a MUI file.
Does this mean I do not have the windows.old file and therefore cannot go back to XP. Windows 7 will be released soon and I use the RC version. and so my version will expire soon. WHAT CAN I DO NOW?
If there isn't a way, I'm sorry to say that I would be looking forward to the next new Google Chrome OS. I love Microsoft Windows for their sincere services. Please help me and do not let me down...

The only time where you can roll to an earlier version of Windows during installation is when configuring real itself. He has no other choice after installing Windows 7 to return to your previous installation within the OS itself. You have manually will reinstall it.

  • Copy of iPhoto/iTunes to external drive for upgrade

I would like to transfer my iPhoto (5.0.4) and files iTunes (9.2.1) of my old iMac G5 (running 10.4.11) to my new iMac (El Capitan running).

My iTunes library is now on an external drive (and iTunes is headed there), and I would like to copy my iPhoto on the same drive - to move together on the new iMac while maintaining the structures of files etc.

Can someone tell me what is the best way to do this? I'm not clear what iPhoto files files, I need to move or copy on the external hard drive to retain the current structure of the organization/etc folder or the process then bring them into the right place on the new machine.

Simply drag and drop them where you want libraries to reside. As iPhoto is plu included you will use the Photos app. You can learn how to move the library iPhotos to Photos for Mac on http://osxdaily.com/2015/04/17/move-iphoto-library-to-photos-mac/.

Insofar as your iTunes library, yet once just drag and drop. 'Teach' iTunes where the library is simply double-click the library and iTunes will find it and then "know" where the library.

  • Why whs 2011 installation gets stuck to copy Windows files on the HARD drive?

I try to install WHS 2011 OEM on a HP EX470 software.  I have tried about 30 times without supervision and welfare facilities in the past 4 months and am very frustrated that I can't succeed and purchase the software was a waste of time and money.  I tried 4 hard drives, properly formatted capacity of 250 GB to 2 TB.  EX470 has the original 1620 AMD processor and 2 GB RAM upgraded and qualifies for the upgrade to a 64-bit system.

Problem with installation assistance tries: Installation says "Copying Windows files", but after a variable time in hours of waiting, growth remains at 0% and finally says "error in installation.  Try to restart the installation.  Same thing happens with the help of the DVD, or by using a Sandisk Cruser formatted and made bootable 16 GB flash drive with a file cfg.ini the instructions online and also tried without the cfg.ini file.
Problem with unattended installation attempts:  Process completely blind.  Does not install even if left for 24 hours.  Cannot decipher the flashing lights on the Flash drive and thereafter, no installation nor evidence of partial installation is visible on check the hard drive on another computer.  I suppose that the same thing as the installation attempts assisted.
Looked for solutions online for 4 months, but nobody does the problem of Windows not to copy the files to the HARD disk during installation and what goes wrong.

  • Cannot restore the image of the external drive

I got a bolt of lightning and the factory hard drive needs to be replaced. I created a DVD boot disk and a current backup system on a USB external drive. Everything goes as planned; I boot on the DVD, Windows loads the files and the cranks Recovery Manager. I go through the guests to restore from system image, that I created earlier and the Manager believes the USB image. All is well until the system tries to install the image and then I get an error: failed to restore of system image. There is no drive that can be used to recover the system.

The new drive is 500 GB, the old is 650 GB. Is the small size of disc the question?

I caught a 1 to, a disc, which annoyingly I wants to go to the origin but rather picked up a 500 GB and the restoration seeks to advance. It has at least not out crapped on the date and is trying to restore the image to the new drive. With the fast error when restoring to the 500 GB drive, it seems the image was to remember the size of the partition and reluctant.

  • Cannot open the Lightroom catalog on external drive

Please excuse the screen name. I tried so much to during registration, but they were all taken while I was sure that it would be available.

I'm moving from a PC to a Mac laptop.

I copied my drive whole photo on an external drive, which is what I use with my laptop. My catalogue and photos are stored on this external hard drive and when I try to open the catalog, I get the following error:

Lightroom does not start with this catalogue. It is on a network volume or a volume on which Lightroom is unable to save the changes. But I have no problem opening an image in Photoshop so I know not the files being copied in a readable format.

    Ideas?

    Hi somedaymetalkpretty

I suspect that your external drive is formatted with the NTFS file system, which is normal for Windows, but impossible to write in Mac. You will need to use an external hard drive formatted to FAT32 if you want to use in Windows and Mac.

    Beat

PS: I guess that your catalog (.lrcat file) does not exceed 4GB, otherwise you would have a problem with FAT32.
