Then I completely restored my system with a restore cd, upgrading to vista, downloaded all the updates and everything else works fine only problem is the opening of .exe files. Can someone please help? I'm no computer wiz only right following the indications :)

  Follow these methods and see if the problem still occurs.

  Method 1:

   

  Scan an System File Checker (SFC) on your computer and see if that fixes the problem.

  You can also try the below methods following the steps by Tim De Baets.
  Method 1: Rebuild the windows media player.
   
  a. exit Windows Media Player.
  b. Click Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Playerand then click OK.
  c. Select all files in the folder and then click on Delete on the file menu.
  Note You don't have to remove the folders that are in this folder.
  c. restart Windows Media Player.
  Note Windows Media Player automatically rebuilds the database.
  
  If this does not resolve the problem, disable the Windows Media Player database cache files. To do this, follow these steps:
  a. exit Windows Media Player.
  b. Click Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoftand then click OK.
  c. Select the Media Player folder, and then click on Delete on the file menu.
