Cannot delete a file on an external HARD disk

Nice day

There are two files on my external hard drive that I can't remove. (I am using windows 7 32 bit edition Home premium)

I have tried several things to solve the problem:

(1.) I tried to delete the files in the command prompt using the command del nothing helps. (says the file does not exist)

2.) I tried running check disk with ' automatically fix file system errors "and" will search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors "on both. The scan finished very well, but did not solved the problem.

The files say 0 kbs and give the impression that they are removed but they still appear in windows Explorer. I also read a sumwhere of suggestion for a different format for the foldernames using dir /x at the command prompt and try to remove these names, but this format of the name of the folder is empty when I use the command dir/x, as well as the method does not work. When I'm trying to physically delete the folder of one, it gives no error at all but does not remove the folder. With the second folder, it gives me an error saying "could not find this point, it is no longer located in..." and then fails. I am currently using the hard drive perfectly (read/write etc etc), is that these two boring folders (that I created and used at the 1 point, but now want to remove) who put up a fight. Any1 there other plausible solutions, I can try to fix this problem?

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

If the problem persists, post your reply with results and questions above. We are happy to help you further in the advanced troubleshooting steps!

    It will be useful.

  • Files missing after moving iMovie events from local disk to external HARD disk. Are they lost?

    Hi all

Tonight, I tried to clear up little space on my local HARD drive and wanted to spend my events/projects of the iMovie local library to an external HARD disk, which I connected via firewire 800.

I opened iMovie (v10.1 - current version with all updates installed). I clicked on an event to highlight and then the FILE--> COPY OF LIBRARY of selected EVENTS.

There, I sailed on the external drive and created an iMovie new library called ReWatch2015. I copied successfully eight different events, including files from my external hard drive.

The ultimate goal is to get rid of them on the HARD drive internal, I highlighted the 20 remaining events I wanted to move and then used the FILE--> MOVE of EVENTS at the LIBRARY and specified ReGen_2015.

It seemed at first glance to move. In fact, he seemed to move too darn fast in my opinion. When I looked at home in the library of the external drive, they were nothing more than a string of question marks, with a message telling me that particular item is not found and re-import the original clips. It's impossible because I have not kept the original source material on my internal drive. I had asked before if they are preserved in the library of iMovie and told me Yes, so I that's why I deleted the original source material.

Don't see no activity on the disks, I did the cmd - Z to go back. Events have now shown upward into the iMovie library internal. HOWEVER, they still have the question mark, with msg on reimport. What is scary, is that if I go to ALL projects of them have visible thumbnails. Yet, when I click on any of these thumbnails to load the project into the editor, I am back to the page of question mark again.

Are the file on drive HARD internal, and they just disassociated projects, or two-thirds of my library of events of 2015 are now toast? I was not under any type of backup Time Machine to be able to recover them, and frankly, if they left, it is not the end of the world since I was of the .mp4 displayed on Vimeo. But, I would just assume the iMovie library intact if possible.

Suggestions on how to recover are greatly appreciated!

    Robert

    Hi Robert

Am having exactly the same problem on a new iMac 2016 running El Capitan: when I want to MOVE events such as you describe it, they sometimes get lost in the original library, both in the target library. Like you, I noticed that a such attempt to move just a very short time even if several GB of data play a role. Sometimes however, iMovie is able to move successfully. I my case, I had to re - import events so lost since an additional backup, I got on another external drive that I couldn't find the clips 'lost' on the HARD drive more. Very scary!

I think it's an iMovie/El Capitan question which could be corrected with future updates. The only solution I've found is to the events of the FIRST COPY, and then check if the target is really OK and only then select the MOVE option, which will remove the original library to free up space. In addition, I plan to copy on a regular basis my library full iMovie on an extra disk to backup using the finder.

Did you find anything in the meantime?

  • I can't find my external hard drive under 'Computer' but it appears in "Devices and printers" How can I access files on my external hard drive?

I can't find my external hard drive in "computer".

I just bougth a new HP computer running Windows 7.  I just copied a bunch of movie files, music and photo of my old Mac (OSX Leopard) on a Western Digital external hard drive.

I plugged the external drive in my HP via USB 2.0 on the front of the computer.  Windows recognizes the drive.  She appears in the Panel of external control/hardware and Sound/devices and printers as "HARD disk".

It does not appear in 'Computer' under 'devices with removable storage ".

I just want to get to my files so I can copy them to my new computer.  How to access my files on the external hard drive?  Why isn't he appear in 'computer '?

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.

  • Is there a possibility of the virus being transferred as well for moving files on an external hard drive?

Original title: Virus/malware/spyware portable with external hard drive?

I run Windows 7 64 bit. My subscription to Norton ran a while back (I know, dumb move) and I want to use MSE instead of pay crazy to renew Norton.  Right now, I'm waiting for Microsoft to difficulty MSE Windows 7 64 bit (there is a problem of file corruption with MSE for 64-bit Windows 7 version that Microsoft is working on fixing)... In the meantime, I suspect strongly I have some viruses and spyware on my laptop and wanted to try a system reset. If I back up my files to an external hard drive will be I might transfer of virus/malware to my computer when I put files on my laptop?

    Hi Cbx_ladyarabica

    Please contact the Microsoft Community.

I like to show you a point for Microsoft Security Essentials. Want to know if there is a possibility of virus being transferred on the external hard drive and back, as well as files. It's pretty simple and I'm here to help you. Thank you for taking the time to read this far.

It is a possibility that the virus may be transferred along with the files provided that they are infected, as well. To be on the safe side, I'd like you try to run a full scan on the computer by using various third-party programs (such as suggested by Andre) to ensure that the computer is virus-free.

NOTE: The use of third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

  • External hard disk paging file?

    Sorry guys,

I seem to have read something on it, but cannot move the post I thought I saw him. Most of the messages speak file exchange and external hard drives as two different instances. I always learn something new, so wonder if you guys are doing, or I did something wrong.

Is is possible to have a pagefile (virtual memory?) on the same disk external hard as scratch disks where are saved? (Or may be a separate internal drive where Scratch disks). The user guide PDF PrE speaks several different discs, where the different parts of each project are stored, much too complex for the user base like me. A separate paging file for each hard drive? Just a question.

If you guys do this what are the benefits, and is there a procedure to do? I don't talk to the OS paging file because I think that I already understand that. But additional paging files, additional according to how many hard drives, a person would have or want to use. Wacky sounds.

I don't think I'm asking this very well, but I hope you catch my drift.

I found that the simplest solution is the best.

    (1) keep at least 20-30 GB of free, clean, freshly defragment your C drive space so that the program has room to open and "breathe." Let Windows manage your paging on this drive files and run deep Advanced System Care Free care a week to reduce spyware and keep the reader in the order.

    (2) keep your projects and files on a separate hard drive (ideally internal) media. (Make sure that each project is saved in its own folder). This disk must be properly configured in your operating system as your BIOS and it should be formatted NTFS, not FAT32, because they come from the factory.

    (3) ensure that Edit/Preferences/Scratch disks the program are all set to even as a project.

  • Moving music files of 1 external hard drive to another

I have to move my music files from one external hard drive to another.   Many of these files are in the iTunes library, but do not reside in the iTunes/iTunes Music folder.  Is it possible to do so that they don't become 'traces of dead' in iTunes that I'll have to then 'find' whenever I want to access one of the songs?

There is no easy way to do it. It is one of the disadvantages of not let iTunes do its own management of files.

My suggestion would be to first let iTunes consolidate the active player library and only then move it to the new drive.

  • # 500-164 HP model: backed up my files in 2 external hard drives, and then made recovery, came back and recovery error

How can I get to the lock screen?   I have tried F11 and Esc.

Your post shows your PC than the execution of win10, but it comes preinstalled with Win8x.  This means that at some point, you've done setting at Win10 level, and unfortunately, that corrupts the information of HP recovery: HP Recovery Manager blocked after Windows 10 Upgrade - HP Support Forum's - 5170752

Once you do this upgrade, the ONLY way to perform a recovery after that use HP recovery media.

Ordinarily, I advise to use HP recovery media to restore your PC to its original state. That would erase the entire disk, format the drive and install the operating system, drivers and utilities HP.

Unfortunately, there is no support of HP recovery related to HP for your PC Product Page. This could be an oversight by HP, or it could also mean that HP stock is no longer the recovery media for your PC.

You can try to contact the HP customer directly, using the links below, to see if you can order them if:

    Concerning

    Hello

Seems that the external HARD disk drive cannot be recognized because of the driver problem.
What you could do to disconnect the USB of ALL devices and open Device Manager.
Then choose the display command, show hidden devices and uninstall all devices under USB controllers. Reboot the laptop.
After restarting again the operating system must install USB drivers again and you could test whether the external HARD drive can be connected as well.

I have goggled a bit and found a few interesting statement abut Cypress AT2LP RC58. It seems that the HARD drive is ok but sometimes the HARD drive cover and the interface connector would be malfunctions and so this problem would happen.

But these are only suggestions if you want to try for Cypress AT2LP RC58 goggle and see for yourself.
