Cannot power on shared virtual machine in workstation 8
Everyone has to met the same problem I have experience where I can not power on any machine if I share.
When I turn on the virtual computer I get a bar saying "power we" which is about 90% of progression and it never ends.
I use Windows 7 x 64 and I have this problem on two different computers, I have never been able to power on a VM shared from the workstation installation 8.
I found the problem on mine and it works now. She was certainly related to the question "WSASocket returned the error 10022". It seems that VMware has problems with some 3rd party Layered Service Providers (LSP) - network drivers 'filter '. A poster here (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/99276) of 2007 also shows that this has been a problem for some time now, while Googling for the issuance of WSASocket shows VMware related links for the best hits.
In my case, I had the NVidia nForce/Forceware Network Access Manager installed (and fortunately does not need). To find it in my case, I used the sysinternals autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902) tool. I made sure that nothing has been set to 'hide' under Options, refreshed and then selected the Winsock providers tab. In my view, that the Description column has even mentioned the word "Filter" for her. After uninstall and reboot, the computer any shared virtual rolls.
Many Antivirus products and other tools such as packet capture applications will install to intercept the FSA winsock traffic (as well as some malware too). Hope this helps someone else with the discovery of the cause a way to solve.

Only, I converted a physical blade to a virtual machine running on ESX4 using VMware converter 4. The converted virtual computer is running VMware server 1.0.5 and machines virtual option 2. After the P2V process, I am unable to power on virtual machines in VMware server. I get the following message:

I see there are some entries that I can put in the vmx file
monitor_control.vt32 = 'TRUE '.
monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = 'TRUE '.
However, this does not solve my problem. Is it possible to edit a VMX VMware Server so the virtual prompt runs in a virtual machine of ESX4

VMware Server 1.x does not support nested virtual machines. Workstation 7 is the first product with the official support of virtualization nested, although other recent VMware products should work, with some constraints. See nested running VMs.

Physical memory: 64 GB
Hard drive: 1.63 TB
7 virtual machines. 5 of them are configured with 4 GB memory and 2 of them with 2 GB of memory. I am able to power on 3 virtual machines with 4 GB of memory.
When I try to turn on 4th VM with 2 GB of memory, I get this error message "could not power on VM: no space is available on the device: cannot power on VM.»
I would like to know if this is the limitation of the ESX Server? How should I size the memory for VMS if I want to run every 7 virtual machines to the

Memory reservations are defined based on VM by VM.
You can allocate more memory to the virtual machines you have in your host (it's not really a good idea to go crazy with the overcommitment of memory, but some level of excessive pressure is used in general). Memory applied to your VM resources are shares, bookings and VMkernel Swap limits.
Just to illustrate:
You allocate 8 GB memory to a virtual computer. If you take all the parameters by default, ESX will allot a 8 GB VMkernel Swap file in the base directory of your VM (it will have the extension ".vswp") this VMkernel Swap file is a safety net. Your virtual machine, at this stage, can consume up to 8 GB of memory If physics is available from the host. If the memory of your host is overcommitted, some of the available memory 8 GB could be allocated on 8 GB VMkernel Swap file.
If you set a reserve of memory - 2 GB - this means that the vmkernel will still award the first 2 GB of memory used by the virtual machine to the physical memory. This is not means that the 2 GB of memory reserved is carved off the coast and completely dedicated to the virtual machine. This means that the vmkernel offers up to 2 GB of RAM to the VM when and if she needs to use it. It is a guarantee that the memory will be available upon request. Because of this guarantee of the VMkernel, VMkernel swap file only has to make sure that the 6 GB memory is satisfied (4 GB total less the 2 GB reserved), so the VMkernel Swap file is only 6 GB in size.
Actions are a mechanism for prioritization and limits are a cap on physical memory ever allocated to the VM.
You can set up any number of memory for the virtual machines that you want - frankly, overcommitment of memory for ESX is a very good thing, but you must be vigilant about watching your systems if approve you. If you have 64 GB of RAM, and you only configure your virtual machines to use total 32G, then you lose 32 GB of RAM. If you allocate, say, 96 GB of RAM (total) to your virtual machines, then you look at a 50% overcommitment. What to watch in overcommitting memory is application performance (and more importantly - perception of the user of this performance) and also the memory ballooning and VMkernel Swapping activity. Those who can both will be in graphics performance in VirtualCenter. I would recommend reading the Guide to management resources for more details.

No, users of shared virtual machines will not be able to use advanced graphics on their dev machines.I'm not sure of the part of the license. I think, VMware workstation license requires only for the hosted operating system, not for guested operating systems. I mean you can build N number of virtual machines on your physical server with a single license.~ Ganesh -
VMware Workstation 6.5 - not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine
My host is a processor Intel Core i5 (active VT) and 8 GB of RAM Windows 7 64 bit running with hardware virtualization enabled.
Apart from McAfee Antivirus and the usual Windows updates, no other software has been installed on the host machine.
I am running Vmware Workstation 6.5 and I installed 3 popular VM with below guest OS, s/w and memory:
VMware ESX 4-2 GB
Server 2003 (DC and DNS) - 1 GBServer 2003 (vCenter Server) - 1 GB
However, it is not possible for me to all 3 virtual machines run simultaneously. If I turn on Vmware ESX 4 and try to start Windows 2003 VM, it displays the following message:Not enough physical memory is available to power on this virtual machine with its configured settings.
To resolve this problem, set the parameters in additional memory to allow for more virtual memory machine to swap.
If you were able to on this Windows virtual machine on that host computer in the past, try restarting the host computer. Reboot may allow you to use a little more memory host to run virtual machines.
Can you get it someone please let me know where are the rest of the memory is busy? Size of total memory of 3 virtual machines are only 4 GB and I have to be able to run all the VMs set 3, but in this case I can't even run two virtual machines simultaneously.
Please help what should I do?

I am currently using preinstalled VMware 7.1 and I try to import a virtual machine, I used to work on my windows XP. Recently, I am using windows VISTA and I am trying to import my VM (.vmx) and I get this error "cannot convert a virtual machine, although it is powere on or suspended. "Shut down and power off the virtual machine before the conversion.
This virtual machine worked very well under windows XP and VMware 6.5, but now I am not able to import it. Please suggest how I can make this virtual machine running in my VISTA and vmware 7.1.
I am also attaching the converter file logs and .vmx vmware.

OK, this problem beautifully undescriptive I've seen caused by what seems to be dozens of things happening for me.
I made the mistake of horrible update my FC8 kernel to the latest one (2.6.26.8 - 57.fc8). Mind you, that's all that's changed. It was with a 1.06 server with happiness and perfectly good computers running virtual in use before the upgrade.
After the new kernel and reboot, I had to rebuild vmmod. I had to get a fix of any - any later that I used with my previous kernel (116 does not solve the problem of compiling) so I used all-any117d. Update like a champion.
Try to turn on a VM and Ihanta!, the above error.
Nothing else was changed.
I tried the upgrade to VMware Server 1.08. Used all-new any117d - update OK.
Error again.
I have re-run the compilation, this time to say 'yes' to what the installation script to "adjust the permissions of all virtual machines in xxxlist" or whatnot.
Error again.

I'm in the same boat. Fedora 8 2.6.26.8 - 57.fc8 #1 SMP
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling v1.0.6 thru 1.0.8 with all 116 updates and 117d. 117D compiles with every version of server but when I try to turn on a virtual computer I get this error.

You have a bad version of the module kernel "vmmon.
Try reinstalling VMware Server.

I found several posts other people have this problem but
they are months with no recent activity and nothing that solved the problem. I found appeared
to get a fix, one updated the all an update that corrects the problem for

Workstation 8 shared virtual machines and games?
How do the shared virtual machines work? I'm looking for a customer solution light game, but I don't know if that's it.
Let's say I have a super gaming office and an old laptop computer connected to the same local network. A Windows 7 VM running on the desktop computer can play Batman: Arkham City at 40 frames per second, while the laptop is still too weak to run a Windows 7 VM. If I had to share the virtual machine with the laptop, would it be possible to play the Arkham City from the laptop to the same 40 fps? Or is the process of sharing incur fines for failure that make the game unplayable?
3D acceleration is not supported via the remote consoles (only for local consoles), so it wouldn't do what you want.

Your virtual machine has an advanced configuration option that will remove the error messages, which would make things a bit confusing. Your first priority should be to enable this option, unless you have a very good reason to need to remove the error messages.
Close VMware workstation. Navigate to the folder of the virtual machine (E:\SOASTA\CloudTest Lite.vmwarevm) and search for the configuration of the virtual machine (CloudTest Lite.vmx) file. (You may have to configure Windows Explorer to show file extensions.) Open it in Notepad or your favorite text editor. Find the line that says:
msg.autoAnswer = 'TRUE '.
and remove this line. Save the file and quit Notepad.

Save the configuration and power on the virtual machine.

Cannot turn on new virtual machines

I am running ESXi 5.1.0 (1483097) on a server Dell PowerEdge T300 with 24 GB of RAM and a couple of terabytes of HARD disk space. I have a 64 GB SSD as my default swap file location. I'm unable to turn any VMs created on this server (has only one handful of other virtual machines running on it currently, not more than 4-8GB RAM each). When I try to turn on a new virtual machine, I get the following error:
An error was received from the ESX host turning on VM <vmname>.
Has no power on the virtual machine.
Could not power on VM: insufficient resources.
Cannot extend the pagefile to 32768 k k 93504.
Cannot extend the pagefile to 32768 KB 94208 KB.
There are lots of free RAM available, and I don't have in my pool only resource that all virtual machines live subject. I tried to set the location of the swap file VM to store data of the VM, but that has no effect. Any ideas?

you are indeed running out of space on your destination of swap - you have only 56 MB of free space on your SSD. You're also out of space for swap on datastore1 and 4. I suggest check it and delete all unnecessary data. Please note that by default without reservation, the VM creates a swap file that is equal to the size of RAM allocated to it. If the startup fails with swap on the hard drive, try quick vMotioning or cold - migrate the virtual computer to another storage. Also you could do a lot better with the free space by consolidating all your storage to a single VMFS volume.

Impossible to change the path for the shared virtual machines

as long as user root, in the Preferences menu, shared, VMs when I change the location and
(1) push apply 1 time, the path is created in the right place on the hard drive but when I want to share a virtual machine and move toward this path, the default path is the default: / var/lib/vmware... not the one created by the menu setting.
Cannot change the location for the shared virtual machines.
(2) push apply several times: odd error menu
OS: Linux mandriva 64
Any ideas? Is this a way to manually change the path in a config file?

Second data store for the shared virtual machine
IM thinking about to migrate my existing VMWare Server 2.x to VMWare Workstation 8.
My server is a machine selfbuild W2k8 with Core i7, 24 GB of ram, an SSD for the OS and two 500 GB HDDs. Due to performance issues an VM is placed on a separate HARD disk. I want to keep the configuration like this.
At the time where I'm using a trial version of WS8 and may not know how to set up a second datastore for shared virtual machines on a second hard drive. Is this possible at all? Or y at - it an alternative to solve this problem? Creation of a RAID0, isn't my favorite option.

It is not implemented by using a second data store for shared virtual computers.
Workaround solution:
Suppose you have the original data store C:\vms and a second D:\vmsthen create a junction for each directory in D:\vms like that
C:\vms\VM1 D:\vms\VM1 junction.exe
C:\vms\VM2 D:\vms\VM2 junction.exe
....then the vmx files from doubleclick in C:\vms\VM1 and configure the virtual machine to share.
On Windows 7, use mklink.exe instead
On Linux hosts use ln -

I was happy when I heard tell that the new VMware Workstation v8.0 incorporates most of the features from the old server VMware 2.0, for example shared VMs who will be started automatically as a system service and run in the background.
I'm trying to migrate to VMware Server for VMware Workstation, but I didn't understand, how to autostart/autostop my VMs shared using suspension / darn.
When the host (Windows Server 2008 R2) stops, all shared virtual machines should be suspended on the disk, and when the host starts again, they must resume, while the guest operating systems think that these machines were running all the time.
This worked fine on VMware Server until now, but I failed to do it in VMware Workstation.
How to use the interruption/resumption for autostart?
It is very, very, very bad that VMS are a regular stop when the host is closed.
There is no UI for this, but you can change the default values in vmAutoStart.xml (which is in/etc/vmware/hostd or C:\ProgramData\VMware\hostd)

You can use the Stop-VM cmdlet to turn off a virtual computer. If necessary you can even add the - Kill parameter to stop the virtual machines specified by ending their processes running on the ESX.
