Cannot remove orphaned snapshots

One of the servers ESXi 4.1 in my care ran out of disk space today.  This problem has been resolved.  One of the causes is some old shots that take up to 70G (000002,000003,000006 files).  I don't see that they are used.  It seems that the virtual machine has been removed and readded by using the same VMDK. because it's using 2 different directories.  I don't think that this is part of the problem.  The user interface shows no snapshots.

I tried flushing of invisible snapshots by taking a snapshot and deleting everything in the UI.  Snapshots are still there.  When he creates a snapshot, it uses 000001 and 000004.  The old clichés have not been affected at least 4-5 months, looking at the dates.  I tried to delete them in the user interface, but she came back with an error.

I watched the vmx file.  He referred 000006 as reader of scsi0:1, but it is not enabled.  SCSI0:0 is the only player.  I thought that if I emptied the 000006 in the vmx file, I might be able to remove it.  So, I created a scsi0:1 disk and then deleted.  000006 is not referenced in the file any more, but it did not help.

I looked at the latest vmware.log, I don't see reference to files, 2,3,6.

How can I make sure that they are not used?  And how do I get rid of these files?

This particular server account local storage, vmotion is not an option.

I have attached the logs and vmx files.

Thank you

Wayne

If you are sure that the snapshots are no longer needed, but do not want to delete the files immediately, I recommend you properly stop the virtual machine, and then create a new subdirectory in the folder of the VM data store and move the "orphans" files in this folder. Then turn on the virtual machine again, and once you can confirm that everything works as expected, you can delete the subdirectory.

    Hi Jim,.

Both delete and consolidate would eliminate them the snapshots, IE do it connects and validate data on the basic disk (VMDK). I'd rather have the virtual machine under tension, then go with consolidation,

  • Need help: cannot remove the snapshot - score 98% full

I have a VM ~ 25GB that runs on my first VMWare Server for about a year. It's in a 30 GB partition, but at some point, a snapshot is created. I don't remember this, but I must have. I can't merge the snapshot using VMWare infrastructure Web Access; the option is not available. I don't see the snapshots by looking at the directory via SSH consle.

removal of files inside the guest is contra-productive - it will enlarge only snapshots.

Hmm - so you say version 2.0.2 also has this bug?

So either copy the VM is much more big disk and use the shortcut function to remove a snapshot - or copy it to USB and plug this drive into a host Workstation with installed.

Or - this would work as well with VMserver2...

Add a second disk of the virtual machine - nominal size just a little more grand, then one you have now - in a Knoppix live CD boot and

  • Cannot remove orphaned files

If you know how this works and it should be simple. I ran check all links to the site. I pointed out the orphaned files on the Link Checker tab. There are many of them - plus 6 000. I want to delete these files. I select them all and press the button Delete, nothing happens. I select a bit and try the same thing. I try with both buttons remove and cmd-delete (which works in the Mac Finder). I even try to check to see if there is a delete option under the right button of the mouse.  Still nothing. (unless somehow, these files are deleted invisible but always appear on the list?) Shouldn't the name of the file disappear from the list when they are deleted?) I checked my keyboard and the delete button works.  Any ideas what is happening? Any other method can I use to remove these files?

I suggest you re-create your cache.

You will find in the menus at the top.

  • Cannot remove orphans from hard drive

    Hello

I reformatted a nas ISCSI box but I forgot that it was connected to one of my servers in Vspheres with a hard drive connected to a virtual server of 2003.

The 2003 does not start because of the missing disk, and I can not remove the disc error "Invalid Configuration for the device '0'."

The data store is grayed out in the summary page

While do - there is no way I can return the drive.

    Thanks in advance

If the C: disk vmdk still exists, create a new virtual machine and attach this vmdk instead of create a new virtual hard disk.

  • Cannot remove orphaned templates of VI 2.5.0 inventory

I have a few models on one of my esx hosts that, for some reason, is become grayed out in virtual center. Records were removed the vmfs volume (trying to solve the problem since I couldn't do anything with them through the VC) but I can't remove these virtual machines of the inventory. they appear only when you view the server through VC. If I find the server directly using the vi client they do not appear.

When good click the VM options are grayed out as well.

This is originally my backups to report failures from his tent of backup of the virtual computer that is no longer that does not exist. And I just want to clean in general (there are five).

    Thank you

If you are running vmware-cmd - l ist the VM listed yet?

    If so try vmware-cmd - s unregister /vmfs/volume/XY/VM/VM.vmx

    If it does not help...

Try to restart your service pass: service mgmt-vmware restart

If it does not help either remove your host inventory and him readd

After that, your problem has disappeared.

  • Cannot delete orphans actions in Windows 7

I have cloned my hard drive and replaced by a larger. In the process, I temporarily deleted all the other drives. One of them had some "shared folders".

Now I have the largest disk and have deleted a "recovery" partition, I have several actions that have been in a different drive letter and are now: "not accessible" and cannot be opened: "could not start Explorer hosted to..." »

Command prompt "net share/delete xxxxx" said that they do not exist.

Computer Management shows them, but the only option is the 'open '.

Mountvol.exe does not recognize that the orphaned drive letter part therefore cannot remove any mount point.

While they are there... but can not be referenced or removed.

Any help with this would be most appreciated.

Mountvol will only show local readers, not the network shares.

If you are sure that you watch them actions (which I doubt) then you can remove them here: HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\shares. Better to create a restore point before the registry of hacking and to check that your repair CD Windows 7 is good nick.

  • Orphaned snapshots after Consolidation?

My classmates one of our servers to the left with a snapshot on it for MORE than 6 months, so that the hypervisor ran out of space.  I'm, «Believe» at this point, the file delata, once he ran out of space, was coruupt, as he could not continue to add data in the Delta.  Being a limited space, I quickly STOP the machine virtual and tried the trick, to make a SMALL snapshot, with the machine turned off and then went to snapshit Manager and chose, 'DELETE ALL'... of course the space on the data store was NOT 1.5 times more than snapshots, if removing it does not.  I thought at this point, it would be better to migrate the virtual computer in a data store that is large enough to perform the consolidation.  I mounted a datastore NFS to the hypervisor, deleted the current virtual incentory computer and made a COPY of the virtual machine to the new data store, which has been a success.  I then tried to start the virtual machine, and first he failed, because of course, the snapshot that was used for the virtual hard disk was corrupt.  At this point, I analyzed the data, I looked through the VMDK to determne which was the last good snapshot VMDK.  I found and edited ther. VMX file to point at him and of course, start the VM.  A good result.  I then turned it off, make a small snapshot again and then choose REMOVE ALL.  This time it went through successfully.  My VM is not pointed at the BASE vmdk-flat file.  BUT, I seem to have ORPHANED vmdk delta files, what is the best way to deal with this?  If you need logs please let me know.

My goal is to clean all orpahned uneeded files and then copy the virtual computer to the original data store.

PS - my only real concern is at this point that there seems to be some delta files hang out, although I DO NOT believe that they are used, since I showed up my base vmdk, after consolidation through the snapshit Manager.

Impatience of all advice.  Thanks in advance.

I'm still confused! It's the same VM we talked to Re: orphan Snapshots after Consolidation?.

Since the snapshot (1, 3, 4, 2 Basic) string is equal to 'PowerSchoolTestWeb.vmdk', you can use the same command as shown in Re: orphan Snapshots after Consolidation? - with just replace the name of hard - to clone the virtual disk.

  • How can I determine the amount of disk space is required to remove a snapshot of peacebuilding assistance, then a fret?

I have a 27G vm running on Fusion 2.0.1 - the Mac OS X file system has only about 15 G of free space. I want to shrink the vm disk to release ~ 10 of unused space (which was initially to unpack a large SQL Server db that has since been removed in XP), however, I am unable to use tools to decrease because there are snapshots and cannot remove the last snapshot - when I try I get the error: «unable to clean deleted files» : There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation. »

I read other associated messages and understand how the snapshot deletion process works (stolen turns into the existing vm before be deleted). I tried a solution of possible workaround I've seen described elsewhere - creation of a new snapshot, and then remove the existing (old) snapshot and try to remove then the new snapshot - however, which results in the same error. If this procedure fails, a snapshot of the 'Consolidation of assistance' is sometimes created.

I think that error indicates that space is insufficient on the Mac file system, is that correct? The 15G is not enough. If so, is there a simple rule that told me how much free space will be necessary?

I think it's a darn good reason to buy a bigger hd faster for my Macbook - but thought I would ask first

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

    Doug

It depends on.  IF you have created your virtual disk as a monolith, then you need at least as much free space as the defined maximum size of the virtual drive.  If you created it as a disc of 2 GB-Split, then you need a little more than 2 GB of free space.

Not that I can find a "manually change the files' on the site of the add-on.

I can find a manually records sort that does exactly what it says, but does not add and the columns you show. I can also find "additional folder columns" which aims to give your comments headers. • Cannot remove the ghost folder. Error message: there is no such mailbox

When I configure Thunderbird to connect to my Alpine Webmail, I had to rearrange my folders. Cannot remove a folder titled "mail" because according to TB "there is no such mailbox" but still shows on the tab my folders. I read through the previous discussions and have tried to unsubscribe the ghost folder, but that did not work or the other. I have a Mac OSX if this affects what it is. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you.

Hello world. I solved the problem... somehow. By removing the account of Treasury Board and put in place again, TB has been able to sync with the files that were on Alpine. The ghost folder still presented (despite not existing not not on the Alpine site), but by changing the directory to the IMAP server of "mail" to "mailbox" the ghost folder disappeared. I found myself with records who have been named oddly (most likely due to the change of the name of directory) so when I changed the IMAP server directory to "mail" it reset my files with the way they were, with the exception of the ghost folder, that was no longer there. I'm not entirely sure why it worked, but in case someone else has a similar problem, I recommend to give it a try.

Thank you all for your comments and help.

  • Cannot remove iCloud backup of my old iphone

I upgraded from an iPhone 4 to a 6 s iPhone yesterday. Activation and downloading my settings and applications from the iCloud went perfectly. I am now trying to delete the backup of the iPhone 4 on the iCloud, so I can have enough space to save my iPhone 6 s. I get a message, "this backup cannot remove because it is in use". Any suggestions?

    Hi Poppabear5,

Congratulations on your new iPhone 6 s! I understand that you have a problem with deleting your iPhone upward iCloud. Let's see if we can understand what is happening.

The type of message you see, looks like your iPhone 6s is not made backup upward. The best way to confirm this is to see if it is possible to make a backup with your iPhone 6s and see if Yes see a message in the sense of "this iPhone is currently being restored and will back up automatically when it's done.". If this is the case, then you want to wait for the restore before you delete the backup. Another thing to think about is if you still have your iPhone 4, make sure it is not turned on and backup. It would be considered in service as well.
