How am I supposed to repair my XP installation if I can't even start the CD-ROM?

    Help, please! Thank you

I posted in another topic where you described your startup problem, but I just have to repeat it here.

To force the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device, you have three options:
Press and hold C after having turned on the laptop
Choose the boot device after pressing the F12 key
Change in the BIOS boot order

If no method can help, try using different media bootable (Windows, Linux). By the same result I think there is a problem with the optical disc drive. Try to contact and explain the situation. I put t know which model of laptop you have and how it looks with warranty but if there is a problem with the car it will be exchanged free of charge.

  • Cannot start the CD-ROM of the Debian distribution

Hi, I am new so everything initially: Hello everyone!

I installed ESXi 4.0 on a server HP Proliant G5 and all went well. Then I created a virtual machine for Windows Server 2008 and it is installed and works perfectly.

But now, I'm trying to install Debian 5 from the distribution CD. I copied the ISO to the data store and mounted at startup. I checked the BIOS is booting from the CD-ROM drive, but all I got is a cursor always black screen on top.

The doc recommends using the "virtual LSI SCSI card" but it has been set to 'LSI Logic parallel' by default.

    Anyone had this problem before?

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forums

I would like to run a checksum on the ISO file. MD5 checksums are always displayed with the download link. Write to a CD and try it as a physical CD. These things happen from time to time, but it is usually the result of a bad disc (ISO or CD) or a bad CD player.

I wouldn't bother with changing the order of BIOS. With no OS installed on a hard drive you must always start on a CD as it will be the only drive. You can press ESC to get the boot menu during startup and choose the CD.

You can have a couple of damaged registry keys must be deleted.  We provide steps to remove the key using the registry editor, but you must be careful when editing the registry.  Please follow the steps in the link below for the backup of your registry before you open the registry editor.

    Backup of your Windows registry

Note: Before using this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording of programs. Delete the corrupted registry entries could cause problems with another CD or DVD writing or recording of programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstall these programs before you start you will help avoid any problems that may remove registry entries. You can reinstall these programs once the problem is resolved.

This method provides detailed instructions about how to use the registry editor to delete the following corrupt registry entries:

    • UpperFilters
    • LowerFilters

Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk.

Step 1: Open the registry editor

    • Click the Start orb, type regedit in the Search box and press enter if you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click continue

Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

    1. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
    3. Expand the controland class.
    4. Under category, click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    5. In the details pane of the registry editor, on the right, click UpperFilters.

Note You can also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You don't have to delete this entry. Click UpperFilters.

      • If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of the registry editor, go to step 6.
      • If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you may still have to delete the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "step 3: delete the LowerFilters registry entry.»
    6. On the Edit menu, click on delete.
    7. Click Yes when you receive the following message is displayed:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?

The UpperFilters registry entry is removed. Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry

    1. In the details pane of the registry editor, on the right, click LowerFilters.

Note that you can see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You don't have to delete this entry. Click LowerFilters.

    2. On the Edit menu, click delete.
    3. Click Yes when you receive the following message is displayed:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?

The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.

    4. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart your computer, restart your computer. After doing this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.  Please let us know if this does not solve your problem, or if you have any other questions.  Thank you.

    Blanko2,

This disc has already worked in the past? When did it stop working? Unfortunately, it seems that using a disc will not be an option. (repair install)

System Restore: If she stopped working in any time recently, try to do a system restore. Start Menu\ all courses Accessories\ system Tools\ system restore of the course that you want to restore to a point before it the issue.

Clean Boot:  Perform a clean boot will correct the problems resulting from a conflict with your hardware and the start up programs.

    2. click on Start.
    3. type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both
ends. Remove and replace, do not just tight. For laptops, you can often clean power and
contacts data with a pencil eraser.

Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the manufacturer of system and
manufacturer of device to see if there is a firmware or drivers for your drive if necessary.

    ===============================

Step 2: You have disc problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD & DVD
Burn and CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 operational so that other parts
    do it right.

Did you follow the Troubleshooting Guide for the reader who still does not work? There are
the entries in registry that the troubleshooter does not solve and those who "might" be the cause.

Check with your Maker system and a device for the two possible firmware updates and
the correct registry entries for your car.

Here are the keys that I of course are those in question - for the subkeys of the CD/DVD drive
as there will be other subkeys in these keys. Do not forget to ask specific keys involved as well as
    the parameters.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

You can probably find more info here and maybe even the exact registry for your CD/DVD settings
drive from someone with the same model.

Use DevManView to locate the CD/DVD in the registry (be careful and do a prior Restore Point)
nothing change) - find the DevManView device and then make a right click on it free in RegEdit.

DevManView - free - an alternative to the standard Windows Device Manager, which displays all the
devices and their properties in flat table, instead of the tree viewer

    I hope this helps.

  • Why won't my CD/DVD Slymtype player work, error: this device cannot start. (Code 10).

Original title: why not my job as a player of DVD/CD of Slymtype at all?
    Here's what I have:

SlimType DVD C DS24CZP ATA Device

    Windows Vista Home Basic

    Acer aspire 3680 series
    ------------------------------------------
    So here's my problem:

Recently, I put a DVD disc into the drive. Then, once I closed it, it started to turn, then what sounds like a sound signal, spining, beeps several times, and this will be repeated for a few minutes. Once it stopped, it does nothing. You can not even here it spining. No AutoPlay starts, none Open box, nothing at ALL. The computer doesn't even recognize that there is a DVD in there.

So, I advanced and found in the Device Manager. The picture showed it was a disc with a CD on top (representing is a DVD/CD player) and in front of it, there was a «!» So I opened the information for it. Here's what he said:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10) »

When I try to make windows to search for a solution, it came not with something. I tried to update the driver; no effect. Tried neutralizing him and he the reactivation. No effect. Tried unistalling and restart my computer. When he tries to install it, it fails.

So now, I did everything I know. Does anyone know how to fix this without having to replace the drive itself? Or should I replace it?

    Thanks in advance!
