Cannot write to the folder C:\WINDOWS during repair or even Recovery Console

The security on my folder C:\WINDOWS on my XP Home Edition somehow got changed to allow total control over a normal users (not administrator), and * only * this user - that is to say, no one else appeared in the list of users who have access to this folder.  I discovered this in the context of trying to figure out why the windows updates work is more due to the file permission errors.  To try to solve this problem, I changed the security for the C:\WINDOWS folder to 1) completely remove the normal user authorization and 2) add full control permissions to the accounts of two administrators on the computer.

Unfortunately, next time I restarted the system, it would no longer boot properly - it shows a black screen with a white cursor, and that's it.  I then tried using the Windows XP Setup disk to repair the installation.  However, when the repair is executed, it is said that 'Setup cannot copy the file xxx.xxx' most every file it is trying to install.  It may even be all he's trying to install files.  The first file is complains about is vgaoem.fon and I tried to skip all files that fail, but I gave up after a hundred and it was still only about 25% complete.

Then I tried to go to the Recovery Console to see if I could tell what was going on.  I noticed that I can copy files in C:\, but I can't copy anything in C:\WINDOWS or one of its subfolders.  According to the documentation, I should be able to copy files in C:\WINDOWS--sinon, the Recovery Console would be pretty useless.  My best guess at what happens is that the permissions for the folder C:\WINDOWS are somehow restricted such that even the administrator is unable to write to the directory.  The ACL apply in the Recovery Console?  I can't use the ACL commands in the Recovery Console, so I can't say.  Perhaps there is a registry setting that causes this problem?

I really want to do a new installation I'm losing all my data (in addition to having to reinstall all my applications).  Any ideas?

Thank you.

Steve

    For the Temp folder:

It is a restriction of the UAC (User Account Control). Right click on the shortcut of installation, and then click "Run as Administrator" line to work around.

any ideas what the permission problem?

    Thank you

    Jim

Found the problem and it's nothing to do with users, groups, and permissions of files (tmp or anything else besides!)

The problem was that I had not put the sysconfig according the upgrade installation Notes & R12.2 for Linux x 86-64 ( note 1330701.1 )

I guess the bum steer, which gives install them quick - is indicating that the question is a problem of permission of the files in / tmp, when it is not really!

The only thing I can think is that it uses sysconfig content to add the name of host or domain, the file name, he tries to put in / tmp.

    hope this helps

After the installation of Windows 7 repair I 219 updates. Best way to install? Small batches... oldest first? Others?

In the previous 18 months there have been many updates toxic that caused problems... these fixes are well eliminated or fixed retroactively or this process will be as walk minefield?

I currently intend to install some office and .net updates separately and to wait on the optional updates updates security priority are installed.

    Thanks for any idea.

Properly installed all updates of security except IE11 upgrade [has a full update of IE8 that should cover most security problems... [Since I use Firefox... or whatever it is, but it is to say... no biggie].

I installed the updates [ie8, etc] 1 security and updates in batches of 20-30 for most recent first then older then. Then I installed the office updates and then a point net 3.51.research showed several versions of dot net needed.

After each batch, I did a restore pt.

Note: this repair facility corrected a connection problem that prevented programs and 32-bit browsers... including malwarebytes to connect to the net. I had followed the many expert suggestions to fix this problem without success before the repair facility.

  • SQL Lite: Cannot write into the error of database readonly on release on appworld sandbox

    Hello

everything was workin find in development mode, but when I downloaded and run my app from appworld sandbox I get the following error:

    SQLLite:

"Cannot write to readonly database error"

    Thanks in advance...

It is a database in your application / folder (i.e. comes your file .bar automatically during the installation)?

You should not write in the app / folder in your application. This can be done in development mode, but it is intended only as a convenience for certain types of deployment of debugging (if you do not have to copy all the files on each time you make a change).

If you have data in your application, what needs to be changed after the installation, it must be copied into the app. / data folder when the application first runs (or, at least, when it must first change).

  • Setup removes the junction point NTFS redirect the folder system "\Windows\Installer" on another disk.

On a computer running Windows XP Professional SP3, I redirected the "\Windows\Installer" system folder, with a junction to a record point in a tree of directories to a different drive.  The operation was conducted and verified using "junction v1.06 - creator of junction point analysis viewer and Windows' published in 2010 by Mark Russinovich. I moved all the files and subdirectories contained in the original "\Windows\Installer' in the target directory (the these files had been previously copied to a temporary directory and after the move, I checked that they were visible in the folder '\Windows\Installer' open the symbolic link with the Explorer).
Then I launched a system patch, and I discovered that the installation of the update of the software deleted program point junction that I created, deleted all the cache contained in the directory with the name of substitute target different files and recreated the "\Windows\Installer" folder in the original disc.
I tested this behaviour a couple of times, installing various software and updates, so I assume that it does not depend on the software that is installed but the installation program itself, which cannot handle a point of junction of the folder "install".
No warning is given before deleting the junction point and all of its contents.  With a similar procedure, I made two points of junction for '\Windows\Downloaded facilities' and '\Windows\Microsoft.NET' and they have exploited properly.
Out of understanding points do not work on startup, so it is impossible to redirect for example. :

    • \Windows
    • \Windows\System32
    • \Windows\Config

"\Windows\Installer" isn't one of those cases, and it is not used at startup.

Is it possible to use a junction point to redirect the \Windows\Installer on another disk/partition folder, or Setup will always delete all the files that have been targeted in the naming of replacement?

  • Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

I'm doing a clean install of windows xp C:\i386 professional.  I can't work around the error above.

Assuming that the file is good:

    1. Mount the drive in another computer Windows XP.
    2. Move the folder i386 on the disk.
    3. Format the drive FAT32
    4. Bring the i386 on the disk file.
    5. Start the computer with a Windows 98 boot CD
    6. Run \i386\Winnt.exe
    7. Once Windows is installed, you can convert the FAT32 to NTFS drive.

Windows XP not reformatted partitions greater than 32 GB in FAT32, you can keep the score at this size or less. If you want a partition larger than 32 GB, you can use the Windows 98 boot cd to prepare the drive and format it FAT32.

Fdisk can choke on the logical drives NTFS tools as Delpart.exe can cope with this, or you can use the Windows XP disk management tool to remove the partitions on the drive before using the Fdisk and W98 startup disk.

To start the disk management tool type diskmgmt.msc in the box run from the start menu.  Windows XP cannot format disks over 32 GB FAT32, but it can ride greater than 32 GB FAT32 drives which have been prepared by other operating systems.

Download the Windows 98SE you without a RAMDrive (Win98SEnoram_bootdisk.iso) it has no Smartdrv and without it, it will take Winnt forever to copy files.

Make sure that you have the Windows XP product key before do you all this!  Without the key, you will not be able to install Windows.  The key can be extracted from the registry if necessary.
