  I don't know what the problem with your machine, but it is possible that it is hardware or software partners. I suggest that you post in the forums there is someone out there can help you out. If your machine is still under warranty I contact them or take it to a reputable repairshop. Just to let you know I was really sick and I couldn't return my machine within a period of one month return policy, and they told me to come any time to get my computer fixed.

  My computer crashed so I had to use my recovery disks that are about 8-10 years. When I reinstalled Windows service pack 2, the system recovery tools and several other microsoft tools not have installed on my system. Is it possible to recover these tools? The command prompt tells me that they are not on my system and get help from the Server Manager in the service (Net HelpMSG 2185) option. Can you tell me what that means and if/how I can do this?  I can't find a tab from the system restore on my computer. I guess that's because I have more access to these tools. My messages when I try to update things like Windows Media Player tells me that I can't set a date of restoration and that if I lose my installed programs that they can not be recovered. Guess that means I have to use my recovery again disks?

  This is to manually remove the master files. But are you sure you want to do this? Especially if these files are raw files? If you do, you throw a lot of precious image data.   You cannot use COLLECT LOOSE on scalar variables. The variables must be defined as a TYPE of COLLECTION to make in bulk to collect.

  I did a bunch of household file (empty the deleted directories and some movement of files to other readers. I created a new catalog and import all the files again. But they all came without their key words. A I screw up? I still have my old catalogue files.

  From your description you seem to have not registered metadata to files. Keywords can be imported into the new catalog, if they have been initially saved to the files (e.g. Select file, and then press Ctrl / Cmd + S to save metadata). If you have still the catalog and the original structure of folders and files have not been moved, you should be able to reopen the old catalog (or double-click the relevant .lrcat file). One time open, click All Photos and select all the images then press Ctrl / Cmd + S.

  If the folder structure and files locations have been changed, then it might be faster to just submit a new application using the keywords again. However, the process can be accelerated by exporting the list of key words of the old catlog (open catalogue and choose keywords to export in the menu metadata). This list of keywords can then be imported into the new catalog.

  The location of the catalog and the location of your images are completely independent of each other.

  For example,.

  My pictures: (internal) d:\from_camera, q:\from_camera (external)

  image backups: p:\from_camera

  I put catalogs on my internal drive, they very slightly longer run fast.

  External drives come and go; Add more as needed.

  If you are dealing with multiple computers, you can put the catalog and images and the same external drive and move the drive from one computer to the other.

  If you use several external drives, and some of them are disconnected, LR will show previews and thumbnails in the LR cache (located in the catalog). Necessary for files located on disconnected drives will be indicated as "missing" until you connect the drive.

  If you want to use a larger cache, you can enable Smart previews, which allow you to do an edition more than normal when the original files were defeated.

  As I do this:

So I decided that the only thing I could do was to restore the computer. So I did. However when he asked for the second CD to be inserted the drive does not recognize it (a series of jarring and whirs repetitive of the reader in the same way exactly, that it had been a week or two before; though even when it would not read anything else, would still read DVD about 40% of the time). I tried several times, but meanwhile, the corruption of the display is back!

  I had to cancel the process and the Multidrive still refuses to read the recovery CD and so the laptop computer simlpy cannot be restarted. The most concerning thing now is that the corruption of screen returned when I finally tried to start the computer with the recovery CD - text was corrupted and polyhedral and randomly on the screen. The laptop is now off.

  I fear that it is a hardware failure. I don't see how it could be a virus because one) my anti virus (Norton) was only two or three days from its last update and b) display corruption occurred still even after that the hard drive had been partially formatted by the restore disc, and Windows had not yet started.

  Does anyone have advice? The problem is that I can't boot from the restore disc (unless there is a way to boot from an external CD drive?) and given the corruption of persistent display, I am not yet convinced that that would solve the problem anyway.

  I care about 140 Windows PCs and I have more than 13 years.  Until last September, the only AV software that I would allow my clients to use was Norton Antivirus.  Note that this is not the same as any other product, Norton 360 or Internet Security.

  Last September, Symantec (Norton owner) decided to no longer sell such a product.  After much research, I decided on Bitdefender Antivirus 2015 +.  I installed it on more than half of these PC so far and has never been a problem.  In fact, I think it's a better product than even Norton.  One of the things I love the most about it, is the silence and discretion.  It is also cheap.

  My customers know that if they install any product of 'Internet Security', I won't work on their computers until it is deleted.  Very well, I learned the hard way that the other components of these products (other than the AV itself) IS caused more problems than any profit that they bring and work primarily by stopping the Windows component that does a very good job of this particular task still.  My problem is that when I started to work on a computer with an IS on it, I could spend hours trying to diagnose the problem, only to find out that by taking the product of the IS, the problems have become much clearer and easier to solve.  I think that the product of the IS actually hides the problem.

  As I said.  It is a controversial topic and you will find many different very strong opinions.  I know that mine is based on a fairly large sample over a long period, and are consumers of consumer type Windows.

  Another thing you need to know: you can delete not entirely of most any AV software simply by using the standard uninstallation tool Windows 7.  Most of the majors also publishes a "removal tool" that gets the rest.  If you do not completely remove it, it will cause very hard to understand and diagnose problems.
