  • Need to change the name of the administrator under the folder of the user account

I just got a new HP laptop with Windows Vista 64 SP1. My friend who got the laptop I use a nickname that I hate it when he set up the computer for which it was not supposed to do in the first place. I went to the section control panel user accounts control and changed the name of the administrator account. I have only the administrator account on my computer with the guest account. That part worked.

My problem is that, under C:/Users / (username), it still shows that hated nickname. I want to change the name of this folder, but cannot understand how or if it's possible. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

As you have discovered, you cannot change a user account by simply changing the name. That will be a change cosmetic only and none of the files/folders real profile will be changed. Follow the instructions below to fix things to your liking and to implement correctly under Vista user accounts.

    1. create the new user account (named as desired) as a * standard * (not administrator) account and at least one additional account with administrative privileges. Call the extra account 'CompAdmin', 'Tech' or similar.

    2. Enter the new user account once if the profile files are created, and then disconnect and then connect to CompAdmin.

    3. go in Control Panel > system > advanced > user profile > settings

    4. you will see where you can copy user accounts. Copy the misnamed old account to the new name correctly there. Use her browse to select your new account (C:\Users\newaccount). If you don't want to copy all the settings, and then instead simply navigate using the old user, music Explorer Windows Documents, etc. and copy the data to the new user folders.

    5. connect to your new correctly named user account. When you are sure to have what you need, you can delete the misnamed control panel user account > accounts to users if you wish.

General information about configuring users in Vista:

You absolutely don't want to have only one user account. As XP and all the other modern operating systems, Vista is an OS multi-user with system built-in accounts such as administrator, by default, all users and guest. These accounts should be left alone because they are part of the structure of the operating system.

In particular, you do not want one account user with administrative privileges on Vista because the administrator account integrated (normally only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you use as an administrator for your daily work, and this account is corrupt, things will be difficult. It is not impossible to activate the built-in administrator to rescue things, but it will take third-party tools and work outside the operating system.

The user account that is for your daily work must be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user (call it something like 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar) only it for elevation purposes. If your normal user account is an administrator, having created "CompAdmin", connect to it and change your normal user account Standard. Then log on to your regular account.

If you want to go directly to the desktop and ignore the Welcome screen with the icons of the user accounts, you can do this:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).

  • How can I change the name of the user folder on drive C in Microsoft Vista?

Hello. My father bought me a laptop about a year ago and when he started, he was the administrator. I want to change it because it is mine. I went into the Panel and changed the administrator.

When you start the laptop, when you try and you enter in you must click on the name and photo. That's my name.
When you open start, my name is there on the right with its own content of contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, Favorites, links, music, images, games, videos and research.

The problem is when I open my C drive and go to users, there is a folder with the name of my father and the public. If you open the name of my father, it contained contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, Favorites, links, music, images, games, videos and research.

I tried to change it again via Control Panel and just try to rename the folder. None of those who worked.
How can I change my name? Is it still possible?

    Thanks for your help.

Your father apparently just rename her user account with your name. As you have discovered, you cannot change a user account by changing just the name. Simply by changing the name will do a cosmetic change only and does not affect the underlying files/folders in the profile. If it is important for you:

    1. from an administrator account, rename the account she had originally. Then create the new Standard * user account named in the way that you want and at least an additional administrator account. Call the last 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar.
2 log in to the new Standard user account once if the profile of the files/folders are created and then connect to CompAdmin.
    3. now go to control panel > system > advanced > user profile > settings *.
    4. you will see where you can copy user accounts. Copy the old account to the new from there. Use her browse to select your new account (C:\Users\newaccount).
5 log in to the new account correctly named and make sure all your stuff is here and it works as you want. When you are satisfied, you can log on and CompAdmin and remove the old account from the control panel > user accounts.

    * In the course of running as a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. You don't want to run as administrator for your daily work. Keep CompAdmin for your administrative account and use it only for the elevation and emergency situations.

    * If you do not want to bother copying old misnamed account settings, you can skip this bit and simply copy your data to the new user account instead.

If you want to access your account again, correctly named automatically, follow these steps:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null). MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Change the name of the folder "User".

I changed my account from Xyz to Abc name, but who has not automatically changed the name of the C:\Users\Xyz to C:\Users\Abc. Then I spotted responses in the latest discussions in this forum and a suggestion created a new user account called 'for now', made "at this time," the administrator, converted my old user ("xyz") account to a standard user, disconnected Xyz, logged on to 'for now' and tired to rename the folder C:\Users\Xyz to C:\Users\Abc... but it wouldn't let me not - says "this action can not be performed because the file or a. file is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again. "I had closed all the files and folder... When Windows gave me this error message, I even open the Task Manager to 'for now', opted to show processes from all users, and there was no open process account Xyz... So why am I still not able to rename Xyz? Most frustrating. Why cant Windows 7 at least tell me what file or folder is open in Xyz?

    Hello

You can't rename a user account records. You can rename a user account, but it will not rename the files. The reason is that each user profile is associated with a specific security ID and there are many places in the system who wants to say that SID and the names of these folders.

See the following article for instructions on the replacement of an existing one with a new profile user profile. This information allows to replace your original account.

Difficulty a user profile corrupted - how to

WARNING: Be very careful when changing user profiles. Always ensure that you have at least one administrator created account to use when creating/changing of accounts. If you remove the single administrator profile, you may lock you out of the computer that requires reinstallation of the operating system to retrieve.

After you create a new user profile, you must disconnect and connect with the new profile to complete the creation of the profile.

    I hope this helps.
