Cloning a virtual machine from a snapshot

Using VMware Workstation I see that I can clone a virtual machine from a snapshot.

I do not see a similar feature using the free version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi): is this correct?

Should what component I add to activate even for VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi)?

I had to upgrade to VMware vSphere?

  • You can create a virtual machine from a snapshot?

I have a virtual machine running that I am not able to stop, I want to create a snapshot of this virtual machine and take it on a test ESX host.  I thought to take a snapshot of the VM running, I can't stop, and then create the new virtual machine to the snapshot, but I'm not sure how or if this is even possible.  If it is possible what is the best way to go about doing this, if it is not possible is there another way I can archive my goal of not having to stop my VM but always get a copy of what I can get it running on a test of the guests IS.

You can also try to clone the virtual machine. Cloning in line should work with vSphere. Good luck.

  • Cloning a Virtual Machine, including ITS SNAPSHOTS

I have a virtual machine with 2 photos and I want to this clone to another disk, such as snapshots are available in the clone. I am currently using VMWare Workstation 10.0. I read a few threads on this topic, but I'm not clear if this can be done or not. I can close the virtual machine and only care about downtime.

    Hello

    1. stop the virtual machine,

    2. close VMware Workstation.

    3. a complete copy of the virtual machine file to a new folder.

    4. Launch VMware Workstation

5 file open-> Select copied VM

    6. choose 'move' on the question, "did you copy or move...» "If you want new hardware, select"Copy"If you want the virtual machine to have new material.

    Basically, that's all.

Note that the new material will trigger things like windows activation to require a new license.

Also note that if you do not receive new material that you can have your machine clone in the same network as the original (among others)

  • One of the disks of rhe in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or a snapshot

    Hi all.

An apologize for my bad English.

I have 10 VmWare installed on Linux Centos 5.

I worked with the Windows 7 virtual machine and hang on it.

Now when I try to run this VM, I get this message:

"One of rhe in this virtual machine disk is already used by a virtual machine or a snapshot.

I try to fix it in this way:

Re: Could not open the hard file. One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or a s...

    mkdir ./clone
    vmware-vdiskmanager -r "Windows 7 x64-000008.vmdk" -t 0 "Windows 7 x64.vmdk"
    mkdir /backup
    mv *.* ./backup/
    cp ./backup/*vmx ./
    cp ./backup/*vmxf ./

But after that, I got the error: "cannot change the power state of VM: can't open ' / * /Windows 7 x 64 - 000008.vmdk.»» The system cannot find the specified file.

Please, help me to solve the problem.

Once again apologize for my English :)

I really don't see what could be causing the problem, except that there are some .lck files in the subdirectory "lock"!

Anyway, if worry ends snapshots and the current state is what you need, you can follow these steps (which are close to what you have already done) to merge snapshots of virtual disk in and use this virtual disk to the virtual machine:

    • Close VMware Workstation
    • Create a new subdirectory and move the VM files and folders to backup purposes
    • "" since this subdirectory run: vmware-vdiskmanager-r "Windows 7 x 64 - 000008.vmdk" t 1 '... / X64.vmdk of Windows 7 '
    • Copy the .vmx file to the parent directory and edit it as follows:
      scsi0:0.fileName = "Windows 7 x 64 - 000008.vmdk" --> scsi0:0.fileName = "Windows 7 x64.vmdk"

Now you should be able to start the virtual machine with the cloned virtual disk.

  • How to move virtual machines from one host to another without full VI and vMotion?

    Hello

could you help me with a question?

I have two installed hosts with ESXi 3.5 U5, which are connected to the shared iSCSI (Openfiler) - VMs storage are installed on the storage disk. My requirement is to have a cheap solution of DR - in case of failure of a host, I need to move and start VM on the host of work. How to achieve without going through VMware Infrastructure 3.5 and vMotion?

    I found this article:

    http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/04/how-to-move-a-VM-without-vCenter-or-storage-VMotion/

but RCLI needs Infrastructure of VMware ESXi does not have default CLI So, how to move VMs between hosts (of course I mean "cold" move) without byuing any additonal VMware SW? It is generally possible in my situation?

    Thank you.

If the virtual machines are running in shared storage (two guests see the same storage iSCSI or NFS) then it's simple. If a host goes down, then look for the data store on the ESXi host work. Navigate through folders for each virtual machine, right-click on the VMX file and add to the inventory. You will then be able to turn on the virtual machine.

To move a virtual machine from one host to another, as long as both hosts had the same processors, you can pause the VM on the single host, browse and add the virtual machine to the inventory on the second break host and the United Nations.

If the virtual machines are on local storage, but the two hosts are connected to the same shared storage, clone virtual machines on a daily basis from local storage to shared storage. Use something like ghettoVCB http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 make the clone. In the case of a server failure, you will be able to browse the data store, add to the inventory on the shared storage and switch the cloned machine.

  • Live cloning of virtual machines to ESXi ESXi

    Hello!

We received a request for a project of construction of a recovery after disaster for their ESXi host. They have a robust with local disks server and another identical that they want to use for this purpose.

So what they want is direct cloning VMs from Server A to Server B, so if the server goes down, virtual machines can be started from Server B and times of work.

They do not have a SAN/NAS solution that we could use to share images.

So does anyone know if it is possible to create a vcli script or a direct clone virtual machines from the hard drive of the server A to Server B's hard drive so that they would work from Server B.

    Best regards, city

    Salvation city,

    Welcome to the forums.

If your hosts are connected to a vCenter, you can script or plan an operation clone from one host to another. Without vCenter, it's more complicated... You can try the script of a VMware Converter operation or the export of the FVO. There is also the old backup / restore solution.

    Good luck.

  • What is the best method to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another?

I am a novice in VMWare workstation. I created my first SharePoint 2010 development VM, and my boss wants me to give him a copy of my SP 2010 VM. He told me to just give him the. VMX file, but I believe that there must be a better method to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another.

    Thanks in advance.

    Coltrane.

    Coltrane,

to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another, shut down the virtual computer and copy the complete folder with all the files (vmx, vmdk,...) on another PC.

A thin to keep in mind (outside the Windows license) if the virtual machine is one attached to your network, you must change the copied disk - as you would with a cloned physical system - to have a unique host name, MAC address and IP address.

  • Virtual machine from Windows XP to Windows 7 Professional

Two years ago the virtual machine from Windows XP was installed on my laptop which has Windows 7 Professional.  I use version XP for playing games is not compatible on Windows 7.  Everything worked well until a few weeks ago.  I was unable to open the games.  An error message window is displayed when I click to start the game.  "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG. • SRM 5.5 - vSphere replication - error: impossible to reverse the replication for the Virtual Machine. A snapshot operation cannot be performed

Hi all, we have just run a test DR failover of a couple of virtual machines in our protected our failover site and all site swung perfectly, two virtual machines came online and all applications work well. However when we cam to r-eprotect machines virtual, we get some errors.

One of the virtual machines seems to have lived the reprotect end process, it is still running, but has not moved to 89% for some time. The virtual machine has a couple of grand (a little less than 2 TB) VMDK. slow progress is just a consequence of the large VMDK?

More worrisome is the virtual machine which don't reprotect at all. It generates an error whenever I click on the "Restore" button (error: impossible to reverse the replication for the Virtual Machine.) A snapshot operation can not be performed).

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Andy

Finally got to the bottom of this. The issue was that reprotect SRM work was trying to dispel any snapshots that were taken on the computer object virtual destination in VMWare, but could not clean snapshots.

The reason why snapshots would not consolidate was because it was snapshots of temporary VEEAM who in fact any snapshot file listed in the VSAN data store. So when we looked through the browser data store, no snapshot file existed in the virtual computers folder. Trying a manual removal also failed.

To fix this, we created a snapshot of the virtual machine in the original data center (note is the engine to the bottom of the virtual machine), this effect was to get rid of the 'fade' snapshot that was visible in the Snapshot Manager that VEEAM backup had left behind. Once this had disappeared, the reprotect back to DCA worked perfectly.

  • Move virtual machines from a to another data store

Is there a recommended (or integrated) way to move propelled out of virtual machines from a data store? Or is it a cut simple and working of dough which can be done from any client PC connected to the underlying storage providers?

If both, store data Source and Destination are connected to the same server vCenter, do Storage vMotion. Make a right-click VM--> migrate--> change of data store and select the Destination data store.

  • Migrate virtual machines from HP G7(single host) for HP G8 (Cluster) without shared storage

I want to know can migrate without downtime with localdisk? I have no shared storage

    Best regards

    BAbak

can I join g7 to my cluster of the g8

You can mix into clusters hosts all desired, even Intel and AMD at least that you enable EVC on the cluster (of course, HA or DRS require shared storage compatible/CPU). However, you need not to have even just cluster hosts to migrate virtual machines through vMotion between them.

migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

Don't know what this "web vmware' but yes, because ESXi 5.1, you can use"enhanced vMotion"to live migrate virtual machines without service interruption from one host to another, even without shared storage:

Migration with vMotion in environments without shared storage

The usual vMotion requirements apply. Also you can only live migrate virtual machines from the old host to the new hosts because of different generations of CPU (and back as long as you don't have bike powered virtual machines on new hosts).

  • Create virtual machines from a template

    Hello

I'm trying to deploy virtual machines from a template, and then select a specific LUN in my cluster data store. How the code below can be changed to achieve this?

    $SourceTemp = "WIn2k08-R2.

    $DsCluster = "DS-Cluster01".

If so, you can just pass the datastorename on the parameter data store

  • Import a virtual machine from a backup of Symantec .sv2i

I need to create a virtual machine from the backup of a Windows physical box created with one of the latest versions of Symantec BESR.

VMware Converter Standalone documentation reading - I see that only the backup made with Symantec BESR 8.5 and earlier files are supported.

Can someone please provide a solution or at least advice?

    Concerning

    Marius

    Hello

You can create a temp disk (VMDK) to an existing virtual machine, and then put your backup file on the disk.

Detach the VMDK and then assign to a new virtual machine as a second disc (the virtual machine you need to restore the backup to that).

Then start the virtual machine of the Symantec BESR startup disk and restore the secondary drive on the first disk backup file.

After that detach and remove the second disk.

Of curse, this solution may not work after restoration because you made the physics of the machine backup and restore to a virtualized platform.

  • Move the virtual machine from one host to another with shared storage

    Hello

I have a question on how to move a virtual machine from one ESX 4 host to a host ESXi 5.  These hosts have access to the same shared storage but the ESX 4 host is outside the network and host ESXi 5 is inside the network so vMotion is not an option.  They are in different groups.  I know that there must be an easy way to move this virtual machine, but for the life of me, I can't find it.  I guess I have remove the virtual machine from the external cluster but how to make the virtual machine in the internal cluster?

    Thanks in advance...

If both host access to the data store even where VM's store, just stop the virtual machine, remove inventory on ESXi 4, go to ESXi 5 vSphere vSphere, browse the data store where the VM is stored, do a right-click on the .vmx file and add to the inventory.

    Hi gurus,

    Kind regards

    Hello

Yes, you can clone the virtual computer.

But your new virtual machine (the clone) will have none of the snapshots of the source of the VM.

This will be just a version of the source running.
