Cloning into a subfolder of the data store

I have a powershell script that creates daily snapshots and clones on Sunday.  I would like to have clones stored in a subfolder on a NFS share.  I can't figure out how to set the data store in a subfolder like "NFS_NAS_SHARED\CLONES".  The following code fails indicating "'NFS_NAS_SHARED\CLONES' is not found, using the specified filters."  Is it possible to have the destination clone as a subfolder of a data store?

I'm afraid that the CloneVM_Task method you cannot specify subfolders on a data store.

He wants a data store and use the displayname property of the virtual machine to create a folder on this data store.

If you clone a computer virtual called XYZ to the store of data DS1, the clone will be located in the "[DS1] XYZ" folder.

If you want to move the clone to a different folder, you can use the cmdlet Copy-DatastoreItem thereafter.

  • Add the new hard drive into the data store in ESXi 4.1

    Hi all

I got ESX 4.1 installed on the Dell server, and I have 3 virtual machines on a data store.

I added a new 500 GB scsi hard drive to the server,

and I need to add it to the datasore or create a new...

How can I see this new hard drive? and add it to the data store?

    Oracle system engineer

    Abrams,

That's all I can help you.  These instructions are based on the Perc 5 / i controller, which I think you have on our system.  You have not specified the server so I just assumed that this is so.

    1. unscrew the hot spare that you just made.  Follow this link from Dell.
    http://support.Dell.com/support/eDOCS/storage/RAID/PERC5/en/UG/HTML/chapterh.htm#wp1061343

2 follow the link for the installation of virtual disks - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/RAID/PERC5/en/UG/HTML/chapterh.htm#wp1069357

This link has three steps to void, skip the step on "spare parts of designate hot."
    a. create the virtual disks and select virtual disk options.   -Online steps to create another disk group and add the new disk to the disk group.
    (b) designate the drives hot spares (optional). =>, YOU CAN SKIP THIS STEP
    c. initialize virtual disks. -online must do.  just do not initialize the incorrect disk.

After the step #2 c, you should be able to access the drive in ESXi or command-line (list of nmp esxcli devices).

And no, you cannot add this manaully until do you step #2 above which is to define the disk group, creating virtual disks and initialize the virtual disk.

    Good luck.

  • alleged connection to the data store local preventing vmotion

I have a VM that signals a connection to the local data store on its host, and therefore can't do vMotion elsewhere.  The virtual machine has two virtual drives, which are both on a SAN storage.  The virtual machine has been previously connected to an ISO on the local data store, but it has since been replaced by client device.  He always insists that he's using something on this data store, however.  I've looked through the vmx file and don't see any reference to it.  I also tried to remove the data store, but he claims that the file system is in use.  The hosts have been recently updated to esxi 6.0 U2, and it's the only VM that now seems this behavior.  Any suggestions on what could be the cause?  It is a server important enough in this environment, and be locked into a single host makes me a little anxious.

Turns out it was because of an old cliché.  If you get an ISO from a data store and take a snapshot, the virtual machine will keep a link to that store of data even after changing the client machine.  As soon as you delete the snapshot, this relationship goes, and access to this database is therefore more a review when searching valid hosts.

  • ESXi 5.5 only 4 TB usable for the data store

    Hi all

Although in vSphere Client 5,46 TB of capacity is visible, I can only use 3.64 TB to a data store.

    Configuration:

    -HP Proliant Microserver N40L

-HP Smart Array P410/512 MB BBWC, FW 3.66 Controller

    -4 x 2 TB as a Raid5

    HP-ESXi - 5.5.0 - iso - 5.72 A

I read a lot of articles on > limits of 2 TB of older versions of ESXi or controllers, limitation of 4 TB of c# vSphere Client, old firmware and esxi driver problems, etc.

But I could not understand the problem.

The P410 controller shows 5.5 TB:

    ~ # esxcli hpssacli cmd - q "controller connector = 1 see the config.

Smart Array P410 in slot 1 (sn: PACCRID110510NR)

MS (Vendor ID PMCSIERA, model SRC 8x6G) 250 (WWID: 5001438013D9F37F)

ESXi obviously knows the same size:

Your output, it shows that there are two partitions vmfs

A partition with 1.8 to and another with 3.8 to.   That's the reason why you see only 3.8 to

I don't know why the 1.8 to vmfs volume is not list anywhere (which does not appear in the list of file system of storage of esxcli also). Do you have any before partition created manually. If you think that if there is no data in this 1.8 to vmfs partition you can remove it by using the partedutil command and then use this free space to extend the existing 3.8 to. But do not forget before you delete the partitiaon

  • Visible data VMFS store on 3 of the 6 armies. 3 the remaining hosts see LUNS, status is mounted, but the data store is not visible.

As the title suggests, all hosts see LUNS... can't understand the question. Here is a shot of the vmkernel.log captured from the server, as it was a new analysis (which translates into a loop of activity in the log file and hard + 10 minutes without change for storage).

The SAN is preesnting LUN and successfully... so it must be on the host side. In an act of desperation, yesterday I reinstalled ESXi on a troubled host. He was able to see the data stores. Today, they were more visible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • vSphere - external USB drive to the data store local copy

    Hello world

Yesterday, I created this post: http://communities.VMware.com/message/2135813
With your help, we managed to find the only way to install ESXi to ISO image to USB external hard drive is to be attached to the machine near her and run the Setup from there, cannot be done directly.

Today, we need your help in the next step, as it seems.

We have a Dell r.620 physical machine with VMware ESXi 5.0 installed U1. We have an external hard drive with the operating system installation ISO images, software backup and a little more.

The question is - how to copy the data from the external USB connected directly to the ESXi host to the data store local disk on the host.

Yes, we know that we can do in the way that connect us to the machine on the same location and copy it into the data from there store. But we would do it directly. And we don't very well see by ourselves or using Google Uncle again.

Poor ability to research, or is not possible?

Thank you very much for your help!

The court to do is to use the Datastorebrowser or WinSCP

ESXi itself can only read the Fat16 drives - so what looks like the short path is the long way ;-)

  • Recommended minimum on the data store when free disk space you use connection vRanger 5

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the recommendation is on the left of free space on a data store. I use 5 vRanger connection to back up my VM to another physical server. As such, I will not take snapshots 'manual '. I'm not sure if vRanger connection, running on a separate server, creates additional files on the data store.

I've read a few threads on this site and some are advocating to let free, 20 to 25%, while that of others, offer 10% left free may be sufficient. Is there an official number for this or if anyone can share valuable experince?

    Welcome to the community,

I generally recommend to have about 20% of free space on each data store. However, this depends on the activity/writes to disk during backup. vRanger connection - as well as any other backup software - create a snapshot, back up the virtual machine and then remove / commit the snapshot again. This is necessary in order to access the virtual disk files. Usually the backups are made during hours, so snapshots should not grow too much. However, you must also take into account the fact that in the case of a mistake - if the snapshot cannot be deleted - it will grow until it is deleted manually.

  • Cannot remove the data store in esxi 3.5 - can help you

OK - I have a problem. I messed up and now I'm stuck.

I was "apparently" in the middle of a converter working, and I deleted the comments of esxi3.5, while the converter still worked.

I selected the rafale and made a removal of the disc that worked, however the structure of associated file (windows 2000 Server) for this guest has not been deleted, so I chose my data store (datastore1) and - do you have a store of navigation data and when I try to delete the folder associated with the guest, I deleted I get the following error :

"General failure caused by file" (with a "/" on the next line) and all I can do at this point is to click OK box to acknowledge the error and I can't delete the folder. I can't rename it either.

I don't know how to get rid of it. I tried to create a new client with the same name as the folder and delete the comments again, but that does not work either.

I'm really stuck - I'm afraid to go into maintenance mode because I have no idea what I'm going to be confronted here since I never used the maintenance mode.

any help or ideas would be really appreciated.

You can try to do a refresh of the data store. The folder structure is not re read very often. In the data store Navigator, click the folder root on the left side and click on the Refresh button.

  • Copy VM in the data store. 2GB becomes 30 GB!

    Hi all

ESXi 4, using the vSphere client. I browse the data store, then copy a VM folder into another folder in the same data store. It takes almost 1 hour.

When I take a glance in the destination folder, the file becomes 30 GB!, the original 2 GB file.

What is going on? Now I wonder, it takes so long to copy.

On reflection, it's as if, Thin Provisioning disappears when you are copying. 30 GB is the size of the VM disk.

What is the best way to create a 'clean' of the virtual machine copy, can I just copy paste the folder?

    Thanks in advance.

Copy operation to create discs always thick.

If you want to copy on a thin disk, you must use the vmkfstools command:

  • Machine virtual IOPS / s report, how to display the name of the data store?

    Hi guys

I am new to the Foglight community, this is a great tool, and I learn a lot.

Currently I am trying to create a simple table that will show me metric of my VMware environment: Virtual Machine name, Datastore IOPS and data store.

However I can't find how to include data store name in the table, because it is not a measure of the Virtual Machine. I think I need to expand the scope of my table to include VMware Datastore, but I don't know how to do this.

    -Mark

Check the options available it seems that it can be done with WCF (the frame behind the Foglight dashboards).  We recommend generally customers who plan to build views WCF take adequate training or our PSO people engaged in it.

In any case I can help show a quick example of how it's done.

Please try this on a local/test server.

Go to Configuration > definition >

Make sure that you are in my definition, and click the icon to add a view. then choose from the tables and trees - oriented line table

Give a name to the view, go public and make a portlet/reportlet and apply

Switch to the configuration tab and click the change for the lines and choose a query

Under query, expand the VMware and scroll down

Until you can select the query for virtual machines

    And press the set button.

Your view should look like this

Now you must select the columns.

Each column has a value you can edit and there is a button + to add additional columns.

Lets start with the name of the virtual machine - click on the button to change to your default column and choose the context.

Click on the drop down menu to enter key and choose the current line (virtual vmware machine)

Click on the drop down menu to access path and scroll down until you can select the name and then click on set.

You have created a table that lists the names of all virtual machines.

You can click on save. and then click test, choose a time and click the result. A new window will open a show the list you of virtual machines.
From here you can continue to add additional columns, each time choosing the key entry in the current line and the path to the metric/string to display.

For example, the name of the data store.
    I change the module

Click the configuration tab and click the icon to add a column

For the column value, that I chose defined context once again, the key input is the current row and for the path, I expand the node for the data store

And scroll until I see the Proprietename

If you save and test you will see the result

Keep adding columns and the data you want, notice that you have arrows that allow you to control the order of the columns.

Note that you can click Show advanced configuration properties

This will give you the opportunity to see the properties of the extra table, such as header - giving you the opportunity to give a more meaningful name (name of the data store, the name of the virtual machine, etc.) to the column header.

You can now go you drag and drop the table edge/report and under my eyes, you will see your new view

Drop it in the main view

I hope this has given you the starting point to build this table.

As I said, I strongly recommend going through our WCF training if you plan build more custom views or hire software Dell PSO Organisation to help build you views that correspond to your need.

    Best regards

    Golan

  • Please help: measure is missing from the data store

    Hello

I have an a 20 TB drive data store and a magnitude of about 40 TB (local disks, areca raid controller).

Long story short, I had to delete and re-create the volume 40 to on the RAID controller (without initialization, of course).

Now all the data is there but eui has changed for the 40 to volume and vmware is unable to mount.

    Can someone help me please?

    Thank you!

    Hello
You asked for instructions on how to readd a missing measure.
    Basically, it's pretty easy:
in the VMFS to VMFS-based volume header section, you can assign extends it.
Lets say that the basic volume is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T3:L0:1
first of all extend is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T4:L0:1
    second extension is mpx.vmhba1:C0:T5:L0:1
Then you will see this string in the VMFS header:
    vmhba1:3:0
    and a little later

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T3:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T4:l0:1

    MPX.vmhba1:C0:T5:l0:1
Just change the list of stretches.
But: normally you can't change this section at all, and to add to the confusion, these values are stored in RAM is not trivial to change this value correctly.
I highly recommend that instead of try it yourself and repeat all the mistakes I made while learning it - call me.
I rather help you personally to give dangerous advice that will probably make things worse.

  • Do we know how the data store is filled

We do not know how the data store is filled, ran put space, is there a tool or a way to get the report how the data store is filled.

    1. go to the data store--> select storage views--> then apply different filters to see DS space utlization by VMs, instant.

    2. enable ssh esxi host and log in with the username/password of root and orders below

    #cd vmfs/volumes /.

    #du-sh *.

This will list all the files/dir on this data store and its size in GB.

    3. or you can use DS to take a quick look at what.

    Thank you

  • VM attached to the data store, but not in the config

I have a few virtual machines that show that they are attached to a store data, but when you look at the parameters of the client both in the vmx file there is nothing that refers to this data store.  And, to top it off, the data store is just a deposit of file I only download iso files to mount for CD-ROMs.  I have made sure that the iso is not mounted on the machine (of course) and have paid through any other part of the config, but still it shows attached to that store of data, by the customer and by a powercli script.

When you browse the data store, there is no folders or files on there that refer to this virtual machine.  I have about 10 machines all in this difficult situation.  Any ideas?

    Thank you!

    Hello..

VM snapshots come with a .iso mounted for them? If so, that would explain it...
