I tried all the ways suggested to correct this error code and nothing works. Do I really need these updates? What other r there suggestions to solve the problem?

Necessary fix for "Code 646 Windows Update engaged an unknown error"
'Important' not installing in Windows Update downloads. There is a small shield with a icon! on my sleep button, which indicates that the updates will be installed, but sometimes they will not be installed. Since they are marked important, even if they are in the programs that I never use, do I need to worry? The message reads: "Code 646 Windows Update committed an unknown error" and has a link "help with this error", but still, it does not install.
Someone out there has a fix for this?

Security Update 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB972581) (KB974234)I tried to install directly from Microsoft Updates but I get the same message.

Hi Bladedancer12 I had the same problem with the same codes, I looked on help and support and found the answer. The moderator has 4 medals and some othe people sent feed back too. I had to download the updates one at a time for KB973709, KB972581/KB974234 .and open and run them as a guest. I t has worked for me and I have windows vista on a laptop, when you installed them this way, you will still need to install the updates, then you will get the software update process. Brillyant now I'm not panyking cos I know nowt about computers but it seems that if you follow the instuctions then downt you fool you, browse Help & Suport click Options, then settings under rsults serch select help & suport line and find the download links. FANG123. There are some were the moderators g name is ken or kent.

Why updates is KB2289158, KB2413381, KB2431831 AND KB2288931, do not continually settle, has happened since November 10, 2010!, other updates that have been noted since then have had no problem.
I deleted something essential or what... Apart from that, the box (Acer aspire 5542) works brill, that's all just annoying that if I ever turn off the pc for him give pause and refresh, it wants to update the 4 programs, I know wil fail... Error code 646: Windows Vista re Office 2007 SP 2 through Windows Update
I am running Vista Home Premium, SP1, 32-bit. Office 2007 SP1 is installed.
I've restored an Office 2007 SP2 hidden (and almost forgotten) update. Failed twice. The error code is 646.
Since the update wouldn't install and just sitting there, looking at me with a big red FAIL on it, I hid it again. Please let me know if there is a procedure to follow?
BTW, I ran into the same problems that other posters have recently that some updates installs successfully through Windows Update, others I had to install directly on the Microsoft site. Once the updates have been installed manually, of course, they were not offered by Windows Update.
Should I give the Office 2007 SP2 a whirl and try to install directly from the MS Download page, or is there something else I should do/check before this attempt?

Code 646 Windows Update encountered an unknown problem. __
I tried installing 32 updates I noticed on my computer, but somehow it installed only 11 of them. The other 20 has not been installed due to error 646 which presented themselves. I tried to install again by pushing Try Again, and it does not work after two trials.

I am running Windows 7 and have several updates that are not installed. Most were in Office 2007 that I unchecked as I do not use Office 2007 (he hated!). Are the 2 other updates to Office 2003.
