Comments about "VMware KB: verification of the deprivation of resources of the ESX/ESXi Service Console ' (1003496)

Hi and happy 2012!

Is the title of the article VMware 1003496 KB (Knowledge Base) - http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003496 - "VMware KB: verification of the deprivation of resources of the ESX/ESXi Service Console" (article updated May 16, 2011). A better title might be "VMware KB: searching for deprivation of resources of the Console of the ESX Service / ESXi Tech Support Mode" since ESXi does not have a "Service Console".
Article also mentions in ESXi running the command "top":
" (...) ESX/ESXi includes the top utility to be able to check the use of the resources on the service console. (...)"
" (...)  To check the use of the methods on the service console:
  1. Sign in to your service console of the ESX host as root from a SSH session or directly from the console of the server.  If you connect ESXi Support mode.
  2. Type back to top ."

However, if you enable the Remote Tech Support Mode (SSH) in ESXi (at least in ESXi 4.1 Update 1) - similar to a "Service Console" - the 'top' command seems to not be available:
~ # top
-Ash: top: not found

~ # find /-iname high
~ #
On the other hand, the article could have mentioned "esxtop" which is available in 'ESXi' (at least in ESXi 4.1 Update 1):
~ # find /-iname esxtop
/ sbin/esxtop
I hope this information is useful. I propose that this article (1003496) is updated accordingly.
Thank you!

Ricardo, we have updated the article to take account of the ESX Classic only.

Kind regards

Stu

  • separate subnets for the ESX/ESXi management ports (vMotion, manage, FT, etc..)

Is it better to have all of your VMKernel ports on the same subnet or subnets separate (one for each role, iSCSI, management, vMotion, FT)?  Are their potential problems with either scenario?  Please include the ESX and ESXi.  I want to get my setup just as it should. Please let me know also if you need additional information.

I have licenses for ESX and ESXi, but I'm leaning toward ESXi are all vSphere 4 Update 1.

    Hello

In fact, you have to use separate subnets for your vmkernel ports but they can run on the same thread. You can share a subnet between a vmkernel and service console, but not between two vmkernels. Just like that. So yes, you need to use several subnets.

  • What RHEL drivers for use within the ESX 3.5 console?

    Hi all.

I need to update the drivers, firmware, etc. on my Dell Power Edge server.

At the time until we implemented ESX, I just downloaded the Windows thing and does the job, but now, it's not quite that simple.

Which version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (assuming that it is not SuSE) should I download drivers, etc on my Dell my system ESX Server?

Dell server: PE2900 (I'm OK here; I know where to find the downloads)

ESX version: 3.5 with no post - 3.5 updated again (after that I updated the server to come)

Options: RHEL 3, RHEL 4, RHEL 4.5 and RHEL 5

The bullies don't need not answer

    Hello

Thank you, but I heard the case of VMware in the past.

For drivers? I am very surprised and doubtful that it is what they meant. However, Dell OpenManage can be, if it of good and done as directed by Dell for VMware ESX.

I would check that whether in VMware said that to ensure that they spoke drivers/RPM and not just the BIOS/Firmware.

They recommended that I have specifically install all updates (drivers, firmware, etc.) for my Dell server.

Firmware and BIOS absolutely. No drivers or RPM... Drivers or RPM will overwrite files of GNU/Linux management appliance and put you in an unknown state.

I'm looking for the best way to do it, and I landed on the installation stuff planned for RHEL3.

I would not, you install a new driver within the environment GNU/Linux things might stop working. Remember that the driver in the vmkernel is one that counts.

Unless someone can show me the 'official' documents of VMware to the contrary, this is my line of conduct at that time.

Update BIOS and Firmware using a bootable CD/DVD-ROM for this purpose.

If you install Dell drivers (PMP), then you can end up voiding your warranty, as well as possibly to put your system in an unusable state during the next reboot.

    Warned is worth two.

  • Adding user to access the Service Console via Putty

    Hi guys

I'm quite new to the world of Vmware, so please exuse me if I look trivial.

Basically, I want to create a user in order to access the service through PuTTY console.

I tried with the root , but it says access denied. I have read the forums and I know that I need to create a new user, and then get to KNOW, but could you please tell me how and where I can create this user as I can only find Permissions tab for ESX1 (our esx server). What I need to for this to the service console physially enter the sever room or can I create this user using one of my domain accounts for VIC 2.5

If I can do or could you please guide me further

Also is it possible to use the service of the VIC, if so how.

I would be very grateful if you could give me an answer for what I send the vizionsupport logs from the console using some of the linux (vmware controls), I think that I can do that by logging in on the ESX Server service console.

    Concerning

    Rucky

To add a newuser you would do the following in the console of the ESX host.

useradd username (where username is the name of the user account)

passwd username (This will prompt you for the password for the user)

Now this user must be able to connect via SSH

You can then run su - (you will be prompted for the root password) that will put you in a root shell

Also, you could edit/etc/ssh/sshd_config (using vi or nano)

    and change the following line

    Of

    PermitRootLogin not

    TO

    PermitRootLogin Yes

type of service sshd restart (you should do this in the console) this will then allow you to ssh to the system as root.

  • Objective 7.1 - guarantee the issue of ESX/ESXi hosts

    Hey all,.

I am currently working on my study guide for the DCA review and have fallen somewhat with the ESX/ESxi Secure objective 7.1 hosts and more specifically the section for "Customize SSH Seetings for increased security. The only documentation I could find about it is in the "ESX Configuration Guide" on page 202 and the VMware KB 1017910. In ESX config guide details how to REDUCE the requirements of security on default (allowing root access, change the version of the SSH protocol, etc.), and the article explains how to set a timeout for the technical support of Mode (both local and remote). I guess these aren't the types of answers they seek, as the section is to increase the level of security.

Any clarification or possilbe advice that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA,

    -Jason

  • How to access the ESX service console

    Hi all.

I'm a TV engineer trying to solve a problem of network with our equipment. I'm not a network engineer.

I'm trying to follow the VMWareKB: "Troubleshooting connection problems network using the Protocol ARP (Address Resolution)" I'm just trying to check the ARP table exists on our ESX Server and has some entries.

KB said running 'arp - a' for a list of the ARP table.

To do this, I need to open a service console. I have now read articles 3 or 4 on the use of the Service Console but I am still unable to open it to run the command. I do not understand what I am doing wrong, I am incredibly stupid or miss me something completely.

An article said, press 'Alt F1"exactly where I am doing this? A virtual machine is connected to the ESX? An article said "to VIM summary screen' I tried logging on the virtual machine and point a web browser on the server, I get a screen of welcome of ESX with link"Connecting to Web Access", when I click on it I get"Internet Explorer Can t Open The Web page.

I had a look at VIM, I can see the details of the Vswitch network on the configuration page, including the IP address of the console service. Can't see how to open a service console. VIM of pointing at the address for service console is unable to do anything.

I just need to know how to open the Service console and check the tables of ARP based on the KB.

Please dumb down of your responses to me!

The fundamental problem is about some units of electric distribution that we use to power the equipment in the racks. They have a network connection which we track using Virtual Machines to the report of a third person of monitoring and control software. The virtual machines are running alarm software driver used to report to the third party. The virtual machine is on a blade server.

We have a problem where a unit of the IML has been replaced but configured with incorrect default gateway address. In the hours to do so, the monitoring and control software lost connection to ILM and one by one, all units of the IML began to send the ARP requests - "who has 10.172.248.254'.

Finally, the MDU constantly send ARP requests and the MDU have lost connectivity to the virtual computer. If we open the VM machine, follow up and a MUD, the ping command ping fails, if we put a laptop in place an ILM and ping the machine VM, the ping works fine.

If power us off/on the ILM voltage they are good, but we are a 24/7 operation and power cycling the MDU is considered risky.

We have had this problem before and the only solution was to rebuild the virtual machine and assign all MDU to a new network address.

All switches ILM is connected (foundry Falstron GS) have been verified by the support of our network guys and we are told are all good. The blade server hosts about 20 VM and they work just fine from other systems SNMP traffic monitoring.

If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

    Hello

As stated, the console is the administration interface that you can use directly on the hardware. It is not a VM (as such) that connect you with the standard management GUI. You can SSH in the network or you can be "physically connected" as you say (I would use HP SIM or the ILO to connect directly to the blade). Once you have that screen upward, press 'Alt + F1' and you connect. Then you should be able to follow the KB to check the ARP table.

    See you soon,.

    TimG says:
I certainly say it is your problem (I don't even know how to see / control when installing local vs. web-Launcher finds Java, or if indeed there is a difference) but I think it's plausible enough to a test value

In 11.1.1.3 the Regional (not the web version) service console will resume java installed on the machine, if Java has not been installed it will use the settings in the admincon.lax file for example lax.nl.current.vm=E:\Hyperion\common\JRE\Sun\1.5.0\bin\java.exe
So basically if you have installed Java 1.6 it will pick up and use that otherwise it will use the default JRE INSTALLED with Hyperion. The web console needs a version of Java installed in order to use Java Web Start.
And I agree to have a different version of Java that sustained can cause problems using the Regional service console.
