Comments from 64-bit within ESXi in ESXi 5.0 5.0 (nested vm)

I am trying to run 64-bit within ESXi 5.0 comments in ESXi 5.0. It was not possible to run virtual machines nested within ESXi 4.x, but AFAIK it is now possible in 5.0. But I still have this error when I run 64-bit VM nest:

Host ICC is inconsistent with the requirements of the virtual machine to the CPUID level 0 registry x 800000001 ' edx.

Bits of the host: 0000:0000:0001:0000:0000:1000:0000:0000

Required: xx1x:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx

Mistamtch detected for these features:

* Longmode; required when a virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest OS. For systems with Intel processors, which allows to VT in the BIOS is required to support longmode.

I have configure ESXi 5.0 VM with:

-CPU/MMU Virtualization: "using Intel VT-x/AMD-V for the EPT Intel/AMD RVI set statement and MMU virtualization virtualization."

-CPU ID level 80000001: edx: - 1 - H -

Any other suggestions?

The host itself needs little memory too, which is not available for virtual machines. Please take a look at the 'Resources' of the virtual host tab to see how much memory is available for virtual machines. There is also an overload of memory you need to take into account for the power on the virtual machine. Assignment of a bit more memory to the VM ESXi (~4.5GB) should do.

The processor is Intel XEON 5110 and in accordance with article (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9882) it is not possible to execute 64-guests without VT and all favorite modes use VT and memory virtualization software (TPS, since the absence of EFA in the older CPU).

In the document "software and hardware Techniques for x 86 Virtualization" (http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/software_hardware_tech_x86_virt.pdf), page 8, I found that the term BT32 is used on Intel hosts to show the difference of BT64, which won't be possible on Intel. I have no AMD to test, but the vmware.log will show just "BT" or "BT32/64"?

AMD systems will be just "BT".

If it's a 64-bit operating system then the passage to the long mode would probably be early enough in the boot reasonably? As with 32-bit processors started in real mode 16-bit and then move to 32-bit mode very protected early perhaps. Why the hypervisor running in mode binary translation for a few seconds? (When we know that it is a 64-bit operating system in the virtual machine)?

I remember well, this decision was made so that customers 32 bits would be run in the preferred mode, even if the guest OS type was incorrectly specified as a 64-bit guest OS type.

I found this online now and the "dynamic" means that it could change between software and hardware virtualization CPU if necessary?

"Dynamic" may seem more powerful as it is.  The passage of the BT to the HV mode mode is done only once (when entering long mode), and we never switch back.  (Well, go back us to BT for some things, like the real-address mode, but it's still true mode HV.)

1 does 64 bit VMs always start in dynamic mode is my XEON being older with slower VT?

This is because your Xeon has long entrance-VM/VM / output latency.  HV is the beginning of default with Penryn (CPU 23 model).

    2. can I tell in the log file that the change of BT32 to VT has actually made? In other words, I thought earlier I could identify the virtualization mode through the lines of MONITOR in vmware.log, but now I know not at all!

For users of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7

You can determine if your processor is 64-bit capable in using an free tool called CPU-Z. You can download it here. Once you have installed, double click on it and it will scan your system. Click the CPU tab and look in the Instructions field, want called AMD64 or EM64Tinstruction set. If you see them, your processor is 64-bit capable.

When the 64-bit processors have been introduced more than 10 years ago, one of the advantages of x 86 - x 64 has been the ability to still run 32 bit OS on 64 bit unmodified processors and harness advantages such as compatibility and real help from 9% in performance running 32-bit code and apps on such an architecture of processor.

      http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7

Windows 7 64 bit comes in handy when you need to deal with at least 4 GB of RAM or more. Windows 7 32 bit can use up to 3.2 GB of RAM. Because the address space of memory is much larger for 64-bit Windows, this means that you need two times more memory than the 32-bit Windows to accomplish some of the same task, but you are able to do much more, you can have more apps open, do things like run a virus scan in the background it will affect the performance of your system. 64-bit Windows 7 is safer too, malicious code cannot easily infiltrate it, drivers are more reliable because they must be signed before it can work with 64 bit Windows 7.

Regarding compatibility, you need device drivers 64-bit hardware devices, you may have. In addition, there is no 16-bit subsystem in Windows 7 64-bit, which means, your applications must be 32-bit only, not 16-bit Installer or programs uninstaller. Also, if you decide to switch to Windows 7 64 bit in the future, there is no way to upgrade from 32-bit Windows, clean install only. Because

If you decide to go to 64-bit

You will need to do a clean install, there is no place on the way to upgrade Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit.

(In this case, you will see a collection of files, the important"that you must search for and double-click is 'migsetup'.) run it and create a DAMP (Windows Easy Transfer file), if you have an external hard drive, you can access it later when you perform a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit disk so you can stored there.

Once you have done this, just do a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit disc. In Windows 7 64 bit disk, start Windows Easy Transfer, follow the wizard screen, tap on which is stored the WET file (external hard drive) and it will restore your personal files and settings. Reinstall the applications needed.

    • How to migrate my upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows 8

      Hello to everyone

I bought the Windows 8 upgrade online to update my Windows XP installation to 8.

However, I only had the 32-bit version, which I didn't discover until Windows 8 32-bit was already installed. It's a disappointment because my support 64-bit Windows 8 and for this reason it is accurate that I wanted to move to Windows 8.

I followed the instructions on the Microsoft support site now who tell me to buy separate installation media. It means that I have an official DVD with Windows 8 upgrade to 64 - bit.

My question is how should I proceed from here? Can I just install Windows 8 64-bit directly above the windows 8 32 bits already installed on my hard drive and do this by booting from the DVD?

I tried to do last night, but the only result was that Windows 8 32-bit re-installed itself hard disk and deleted applications and data on the hard drive.

The only solution I see would be to have to re-install my old Windows XP and start the 64-bit DVD to install it directly on the. And frankly, this seems like an unnecessary pain.

Any help with going from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows 8 using my version of upgrade would be greatly appreciated. Honestly, I do not understand why Microsoft has made this process so difficult.

      Cheers, BillyBob

      Hello Andrew

Thank you for your quick and comprehensive response. I see from your answer that it is possible to 'upgrade' to Windows 8 64 bits from an installed version of 32-bit simply start from the 64-bit DVD and by taking the necessary precautions to copy data and files in advance.

Thanks especially for the guide step by step designed to make a "custom installation". It is the exact procedure, I was looking to have confirmed. I couldn't do this job yesterday, but it may have been because, inadvertently, I activated the "system reset" function of the 32-bit Windows 8 on the hard disk when you are looking for the option to open a "custom installation".

I will try that tonight and get back to you (and any other Googling their way here) a confirmation if it works or not as I found it difficult to find detailed information on this procedure elsewhere.

Just to be clear 100%: it is possible to use the DVD from an upgrade VUP to do a clean install 64-bit on a 32-bit Windows 8 installed version, right?

      Best regards, BillyBob

Please note, an upgrade is not possible by either from installing from a Windows version, or by booting from the disc for 32 to 64-bit scenarios.

Yes, you can use the disk to upgrade to migrate from 32 to 64-bit.
