Compression/free space in the database.

Hello

I need to copy the version of database 8.1.7.4 on solaris 9 to another box under solaris 10 to upgrade to 10 gr 2. The size of the data files (all data files) has data is about 600 GB where the database size is approximately 270 GB. The traget box has storage capacity is 450 GB. What all the options and best practices for implementing this plan. Time is also a problem. The two servers are not in the same place of geo.

Please give me your expert advice.

Thank you
Naveed

Transportable tablespaces require copies data from the source to the destination files. In this case, you have not enough space on the destination for the data files of the target system.

    Friends...

I am trying shrink lob segment and recover the free space between the business segments.

This area in Oracle DB is new to me so try to learn and to shrink the segment.

I went through various metalink doco (386341.1) but not be able to get answers for below...

    Issues related to the:

    1. how much free space is available in the lob segment?

2 can I assume 'no LOB DATA' as the free space currently and even will be recovered once the segment will be shrunk?

    3. no disadvantage of using "ALTER TABLE... SHRINK SPACE.

    4. is it true if storage segment is 100 GB as many redo will be generated when trying to alter table... shrink the space?

    I'm following the steps below.

    1 find Segment name-> sys_lob123

    2. find the size of storage - > 100 GB

    3. find the size of the LOB data-> 70

    4. find the size of the data not LOB-> 30

    2. the storage size

    Select 'storage' from dba_extents bytes

    where nom_segment = 'sys_lob123. '

    100 GB

    3. the size of the LOB

    Select dbms_lob.getlength (col_lob) in the table_lob;

    4. the size of the LOB data not

    100-70 = 30 GB (i.e. #3 - #2)

Use DBMS_REDEFINITION to reorganize the LOB segment, it is the best way to retrieve a LOB segment space. Also use the clause "MEANS of COMPRESS" and SECURE LEADER, creating the temp table. There is no reason that you can use the BASIC FILE. It's online process, which means that your app can stay up to... However, make sure that monitor you the database when executing redef, as it can cause conflicts and slow down your application, in which case you must kill the reorg...

If this process is not feasible or overwhelms you, "ALTER TABLE MOVE" is another option.

With 'Displacement of Alter table', you need to rebuild all indexes after you move the LOB segment. Don't forget this is an offline process and your application needs a time out while you do this.

In the research I did find a way to do it on a mac computer without erasing the drive and starting over. But you can go to your windows computer and partition the free space of disks. Then use the mac to set the free space as mac os extended journaled. Here's what I found. http://www.PCWorld.com/article/2066191/how-to-partition-a-hard-drive.html the only other way would be to copy the file on the external drive, somewhere, so you can delete it and re partition for windows and mac. Then reinstall windows files. I'm not familiar with windows systems.

    Generally no.

How many memory currently have installed? How did you buy?
Did you buy exactly the same type, brand, model, etc. ?

Why do you want more memory? Depending on how much you have now, and
What applications you are running, it may or may not do anything for you. More memory
is this not better for everyone. This is my standard message on this
    Object:

The amount of RAM you need to good performance is * not * a
unique situation for all. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have prevents you from using the file page in a meaningful way, and
It depends on what applications you are running. Most of the people a typical range running
Enterprise XP applications find that somewhere around 512 MB
works well, others need more. Almost everyone will see poor performance
with less than 256 MB. Some people, especially those who do things
as modification of large photographic images, can see an improvement in performance by
adding even more 512 MB - sometimes much more.

If you currently use the page file significantly, more memory
will reduce or eliminate the use and improve your performance.
If you do not use the pagefile significantly, it will make more memory
    nothing for you. Reach
WinXP - 2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your use of the page file. Who should
give you a good idea of more memory can help and if so, how
    lots more.

    > I went to Disk Defragmenter, and he always says that I have 35% of free space.  The new memory will change this amount?  Or is it important?

You have 35% of your hard drive free. It's disk space, also called
storage. It is not memory, what is RAM. Adding memory will not make
any changes to the available disk space.

IM using windows 7 ultimate sp1 with 100 GB hard drive (no partitions) 2 GB ram and 2.3 ghz cpu

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query in the Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand from the description of the problem, that after deleting a few files of the computer, the hardware space shows 20.9 GB despite 31 GB in Windows 7 computer.

I understand this must be frustrating, but don't worry, we're here to help and guide you in the right direction.

I suggest you try these methods and check if it helps.

Try logging in SafeMode with network and check if the problem persists. If the problem is resolved, perform the scan anti-virus in SafeMode with network.

    Method 1

    Step 1

Start your computer in safe mode with networking.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Note: When, at the forefront of startup options select safe mode with network.

    Step 2

I suggest you scan your computer with the Microsoft Security Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.
The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

    Method 2

Reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    It will be useful.

Let us know if you encounter problems with Windows in the future. We will be happy to help you.

  • How to extend the partition that has free space on the left with diskpart

I bought an SSD and made a second partition on my HARD drive to transfer my data. I had planned to clone and move the light to my SSD partition, but read that I was better to do a new install. I made a new installation on the SSD drive, deleted the old partition of Windows 7 and went to add to the data partition unallocated space (unallocated space is to the left of the partition). I know that you can not do this with disk management, but I've done it before on my laptop Windows 7 by using diskpart. I found an article earlier about how use diskpart to do what disk management may not, but I don't know how or where I found it.

I know I can do it with applications 3rd party like GParted, but knowing that it is possible, but don't remember how to do it with diskpart is driving me crazy. Can someone help me?

    Hi Schwaka,

As a general rule, it is very easy to extend the partition when the free space is right behind, but what can you do with the space left? Most people will feel that it is really a great difficulty.

Do not worry! Here I recommend you an easy to use, software AOMEI Partition Wizard Server Edition. It is so common among computer users and most of the people speak highly.

Your problem, there are two choices for you. We have to move the space unallocated behind, and the other is to merge the free space on the data partition. Both functions may not be permitted in Windows 7 disk management. In addition to the two features, more functions are supported to manage your drive.

    Have fun with it!

    Best wishes!

  • How to free up disk space for the database file

    Hi experts BDB.

I use bdb4.6.21 transaction Btree access method, found that after vacuum db db-> truncate, the size of the db file has changed. How to free up disk file db space? It can be configured?

    Thank you

    Min

    Hi Min,

What Mike says is that you do not expect that the empty space after an operation of truncation (for example a delete or update that empties a page) in the database (empty pages) to return to the file system and therefore to see the physical file size decreases.

The next section of the documentation explaining this: required disk space

Space released by removing the key/data pairs in a Btree database or Hash is never returned in the file system, even if it is reused when possible. This means that the databases Btree and hash are to develop alone. If enough key is deleted from a database which shrinks the underlying file is desirable, use the DB-> compact() method to recover disk space. Alternatively, you can create a new database and copy the folders of the former into it.

So, as Mike suggested, you can dump and reload the data into a new database, or copy data from the existing/old database to a new (to remove the old database and rename a new one the old name), or you can try to compact the database using the method compact().

If you use compact(), then in order to force the return of empty for the file system pages when possible, use the DB_FREE_SPACE flag and try to avoid using an explicit transaction (use a NULL tnxid pointer, so this BDB will use internally of several transactions that will be engaged periodically to avoid locking large sections of the tree).

When you use the compaction in order to free up space and return pages from database empty in the file system that it is generally recommended to repeat Compact with a value low 'compact_fillpercent '.  In addition, the following output statistics fields in the structure DB_COMPACT, compact_pages_truncated and compact_pages_free should be examined to determine if there is a point, continuing to run the compaction with the same compact_fillpercent.  If the values are strict positive it is then compact() calling again with the same compact_fillpercent (and specify the DB_FREE_SPACE flag).  The compact algorithm allows a single pass on the pages of the database;  pages so not empty at the end of the file will prevent the free pages (which are placed on the free list) to be returned to the file system.

    Kind regards

    Andrei
