Computer loses programs &; desktop icons when I run a setup EXE
When I try to install a program that is about 10 M or more all my icons disappear from my office (with the exception of the value default ones) as well as most of the programs I just installed and no matter what I transferred from my external DRIVE to C: also drive most of the programs supplied with the computer records and files disappear so. In the menu START > all PROGRAMS, it says to empty. I pinned to my BEGINNING of things are still there. I put my computer to 'presets' 3 times, first with the recovery partition D, then twice with H.P. recovery disks that I ordered. (Order # SFQ70601). Still the same problem. When I install programs all less than 10 M seems ok. But once again, when I try to install a program of 10 M or more, the value default small circle made the round and round for about 45 seconds then I see my desktop icons disappear with the above mentioned results. In Windows Explorer, I installed under Program Files (x 386) very few emissions is still there. Some records are that the content or part of the content are not. At one time given after all that has happened and everything is gone, and the small wheel stop twirling I got an error message stating that I didn't have the permission to access the exe file. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, why all this happens. Help, please. Thank you!
Installed ATT software.for lost internet dsl data, access to large tracts of the computer programs. In "Journal" cannot use main user information. Password is not known 7 years ago. I need to know how to find the administrater and modify, change etc. I can't take the next step.
You describe what happened to me and did you find an answer? I don't want to use the recovery disc.
Not seem to my photos and data on the computer, but I have no way to access the files. If I use the recovery disc, I'll lose everything.

I have a PC running windows vista. Recently, the desktop icons when double clicked do not work, a message appears telling me that the program was not found and to go to the association Control Panel to fix this value.
I'm now PC expert so would appreciate any advice in simple terms.
It happens with all the desktop icons, or only some? If only some, what are their types of files (extensions - the identifier to three digits after the point in the name of the file)?
Do you know when this problem started? Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started. Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/. Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates. Then see if you can open your desktop icons.
There may be something wrong with some extensions (such as .exe files and the .lnk files). Go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and run the process for the .exe and the .lnk file types. ; See if you can open your desktop icons.
If this does not work, your user profile may be damaged. To fix this use http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile. If that is the only available Administrator Profile (you need to be an administrator to fix this), enable the Hidden Administrator Account (HAA) using http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_passwords&p=1&tid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055&mid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055. If you don't remember the password, try nothing because that's probably what you (or seller) did during the installation. Once that is done, don't forget to disable the HAA to save it in case it is necessary once again and for safety reasons (since people often try to hack into systems using this account). Do NOT use the HAA as your administrator account because if you lose the only administrator on the system account or it is damaged again, then you're watered. Then see if you can open your desktop icons.
If you still have problems, after return and we will try other troubleshooting options.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

I was delete photos and old docs in my office when I saw it saying: travel (instead of recycling), so I hit the Cancel button, but I think it was too late. Now, my computer has several icons on the desktop when I Explore my computer. For example, C:/Users/Amy/Office/Office/Office/Desktop. I can't use my restore feature. (And then I turned it off to use Spybot Search and Destroy). So now I don't know what to do. Help :(
What a pity that you cannot use the system restore - which would be the fastest and easier to solve this problem. I recommend that you turn on the system restore and immediately make a restore point.
In which office files are your desktop items (or they are in each file)? I find a folder with all the icons of your desktop in it and copy it into a new folder named "(Old Desktop) and put it in your Documents folder, just to be on the safe side - if you have a copy of going bacck to if something goes wrong while you are trying to solve the problem." You can then try to remove the three options (or ones without entries starting with down one in the path of the file) one at a time (by checking the others every time to ensure that they still contain your desktop icons). Once you get to the last one check again to make sure that it contains all of your items of office and then restart. If all goes well, which fix the multiple instances of the desktop icons. If not, read on.
If this does not work, or if you prefer, you can treat the situation as a corrupt user profile. Make sure you have at least two profiles administrator with strong passwords (to remember) as well as your standard profile for daily use. Once that is done, don't forget to disable the HAA to save it in case it is necessary once again and for safety reasons (since people often try to hack into systems using this account). Do NOT use the HAA as your administrator account because if you lose the only administrator on the system account or it is damaged again, then you're watered.

The useful suggestion only so far is to uninstall PSE12 and reload it. However, I bought this package as a downloadable copy and I don't have an original disc. Because I have now recorded copy, will be - this PSE refuse to allow a second attempt to sign? See you soon
Hi Ned
A.... With the help of your response and assistance from Adobe, my query has been resolved. Help Adobe's response is that, with the PSE, reset the validation is done automatically when the program is uninstalled. I just deleted the previously created desktop icons. Please see excerpt of conversation Chat Adobe below.
- Adobe: uninstall and turn off are the same in PSE
- Dave_t_9: Wow! I didn't know that! So if I have problems loading, I can try to load several times on the same machine, providing I have uninstall between each attempt?
- Adobe: That is absolutely correct.
B.
- I'm sorry that my download was backwards. Also to add the attachment, I tried to use the print to the screen but it was rejected saying that the format was not supported.

If system restore is turned on and you can go back enough, restore the computer to an earlier date using Safe Mode.
Restart the computer and start typing the key F8, select Safe mode with command option. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the right pair and press ENTER. Log in as administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials. At the command prompt, type % systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER. Follow the prompts to restore your computer to an earlier date.
