computer won't post

I am currently enrolled at a local technical college for learning computer repair.   I took all the computers that I can get a hold of that needs fixing, and so far I've done pretty well til now.   Now, I have a HP Pavilion a6000n I'm stumped on.   The computer turns on and the fans will run.   The load screen upward at the blue HP Invent logo asking to press f1 to f10 for Setup, boot menu and f11 for recovery.    If I press f1, the screen says "loading menu startup but goes no further."    Pressing f10 screen says "loading setup" but will no nfurther.   F11 does nothing for recovery.    After I opened the computer, I was shocked to discover that clogged and I mean dusty!   Each vent hole and the fan was a mess with dust bunnies.    I used my vacuum cleaner out to clean everything and it looks again now.   I have a good job of power that I swapped, but that wasn't it.    I took out the battery for a few minutes to reset the BIOS but still no go.    I don't have a CPU to Exchange.  It has an AMD Athlon 64 x 2 processor, sitting on a mobo MZN68 - LA.   What else can I try?    Thanks, Collieman5

I am also a PC repair tech and have been struggling with the same problem for almost a month, wait until it happens for me on a much older HP Pavilion 760n (Intel Pentium 4). But the fact that it is HP speaks volumes, before even they acquired Compaq, HP has been cutting corners and make computers with mediocre pieces. As a result, their machines don't last that long when compared to other brands, and I don't think it's just a coincedence.

HP has recently been hit by a new version: lower than expected sales in the 3rd quarter of 2009. Allowing of Dell Inc. to surpass the United States by a small margin of 0.3%. (And Acer them over in Europe). It's not a deal that big, but I hope HP looks long and hard at what they're doing wrong and improve their overall quality. And until they do, I would not recommend their products to you or any person

But enough about that. We will investigate your problem.

When plug you a pair of speakers, have you tweets? The number of beeps? Long or short?

My first impression is that the motherboard died partially, especially if the dust was in the socket or clogging of the heat sink, all serves to suspect the motherboard. Or maybe the CPU is fried.

Worse, the CPU and the Council are fried, but don't panic yet! :-)  Hope that is not what happened here!

Have you tried swapping or reinstallation of the RAM, for example?

In fact, what causes a lot of wear on a battery empties it too low on several occasions. With today
systems overload are not a problem.

Here are some tips to help and troubleshoot battery issues.

Old battery? Unplug the power to the computer - remove the battery and clean the contacts with a pencil

Check with the support of the machine system, and many of them have on line forums.

  • If my printer USB cable is connected, my computer won't start?

If the printer is on and the USB port connected.  The computer won't start.  If I turn on the laptop with the USB plugged in and as it starts and then turn on the printer, everything works fine.  Almost ok.  I think I should be able to leave the printer on all the time as I do at work.  Then when I start the computer, the printer is ready.  Every other printer I've ever had worked this way.  Any suggestions?

Maybe the printer looks like a hard drive (some printers have card readers that make them look like a disk) and the computer attempts to boot from the USB drive instead of the hard drive?  It would be a modification of the settings in the BIOS

  • computer won't stay in stand-by

My computer won't stay in stand-by.  I tried a solution listed on this site: Panel > Device Manager > metwork adapters > right click on the network adapter > properties > power management (tab) > uncheck "allow this device to wake the computer".  When I select the last 'properties' there is no "Power Management" tab - tabs that are on this pop-up window are "Général" 'pilot' "details.  Computer is 5 years old Windows XP.

Thanks for the tips.  My husband just took a glance found the tab power management in the Properties window of the 2nd option under properties of the network adapter - I just tried the first option.

  • Computer won't sleep

My computer won't go to sleep at home. On the road, it does exactly what I want - after 5 minutes, he made a screensaver of my photos for 30 min, then falls asleep. Home, that she won't, the screen stays on the home screen forever.  Help!

I venture a guess that it is running on battery, on the road and connected to the House. You can define things upwards so that the computer handles things like the "sleep mode", etc., differently depending on whether or not it works on battery.

The first thing you should do is, make sure that your power settings are the way you want.
    To do this:

Place your mouse over the the battery icon on the taskbar and right click.

    Select "Power Options".

(You can also access power options through the control panel: start > Control Panel > system and Maintenance > Power Options.)

According to the plan used on your computer, click on "Change Plan settings".

As you can see, there are two different columns of parameters here, one battery and one for hip. Make sure that the settings for each column are defined as you wish.
You can access more advanced options by clicking on the 'change power avancΘs' link. Go through the list of parameters available with care, make adjustments if necessary. Click ok.

    Click "Save".
If this does not resolve the problem, please let us know.
    Best wishes
