Configure load balancing NETWORK for Exchange 2010 - unicast or multicast

Howdy,

We are in the process of setting up CASE on VSphere and want to configure NLB. The documents I've read talk about using unicast or multicast modes. Unicast requires more setup server-side and multicast requires additional configuration on the side network. A mode is better than the other?

Any help would be appreciated!

Lily, multicast is generally the way favorite due to changes to the requirements to the vSphere host, when you use the multicast mode.  The necessary change disables ESX update upstream switches when a virtual machine is online.  Which means that the switches know where VMS obliging NLB to flood the switches, which is design as well as NLB works.  One effect of this is that the switches will also not learn changes due to vMotion or HA events that extend the time it takes switches to learn that the new location for a MAC address.

Multicast road requires a static entry in the network layer and does not have the effect shown above.

  • Configure load balancing NETWORK for Exchange 2010

    Hello guys.

I need help. Where I work, we have a project where we configure Exchange 2010 DAG and some other stuff, and we have 2 ESX with 1 CAD server and a Server CASE/HUB too on both of them and that we want to use the NLB on these two hosts.

I found this, and this is much like what we want:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1006525

So now our switch we want to create a virtual IP address for each of them, but we are not sure if we need to create a cluster on our servers for this.

Did someone done this before that could give me some advice or contains information to make this work?

    Thanks for your help.

    Howdy,

Am I was right assuming you want balancing two virtual computers CASE/Hub and NO servers DAG?  If Yes, then we are good to proceed... (if you want to do DAG servers load balancing, or if the DAG servers have all three roles, MBX/CASE/Hub, then Windows NLB is prohibited).

You don't need to create a cluster as in MSCS or the Windows failover cluster, but do not create a pool of machines for load balancing.  You must install the components of Windows NLB on each machine virtual (VM Hub/CASE) and then follow the procedures described in this document: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/implmenting_ms_network_load_balancing.pdf to correctly configure the ESX host.  There are two ways to configure a WNLB, using the multicast and uni-cast (by default).  Uni-cast requires configuration changes side ESX (detailed in the document), multi-cast has some dependencies upstream network, mainly adding static arp entry in the router.

Take a read through the white book (it was written by VI3, but the same thing applies in vSphere) and let me know if you have any questions.

  • In-Guest iSCSI for Exchange 2010

Hi, we just built and are ready to go into production with Exchange 2010 using LUNS in guest through the card Microsoft iSCSI initiator iSCSI separate network for iSCSI etc. Load tested with JetStress and everything seems fine. We just found out as snapshots are not supported with iSCSI in guest so we are concerned that the other things work or be taken in charge or another, i.e. of vmotion. So, does anyone know if we lose any other characteristic, and we need to change our minds and using ESX iSCSI? I read pieces on being comparable, that we stuck with a guest performance because that's what we know with our existing Exchange 2007 environment (physical). If we must change, is it simple?

Hey everyone who is following this thread or found via Google.  It is important to understand what is and is not supported when you are running Exchange on a virtual machine.

To be absolutely clear, combining Exchange 2010 DAG and migration technologies such as vMotion technology is supported.  You must ensure that you are running at least Exchange 2010 SP1 as well as a version of vSphere that sits on the server virtualization Validation program.

I think that the link was already posted, but here is the final link:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/Exchange/archive/2011/05/16/announcing-enhanced-hardware-virtualization-support-for-Exchange-2010.aspx

More specifically, since the post above (in bold italics):

Combining Exchange 2010 high availability solutions (database availability groups (DAG)) with hypervisor clustering high availability and migration solutions that will be moving or automatically failover servers for mailboxes that are members of a DAG between clustered root servers, is now supported.

Improved, that we did in Exchange Server 2010 SP1, with more comprehensive tests of Exchange 2010 in an environment that is virtualized, we are pleased to offer this additional deployment flexibility to our customers. Management of updated support applies to any provider of hardware virtualization that participate in the Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP).

Logiboy123, can you provide any documents to support the statement that Microsoft does not support this configuration?  The above quotes are directly from Microsoft and are very clear that they support not only the migration of Microsoft technology, but also similar to any other provider of the hypervisor technology, provided that they are in the SVVP program.

Since vSphere is part of the SVVP, Microsoft has extended support for the technologies of migration such as vMotion, in addition to their own Live Migration.  Of course, simply support something does not automatically make it works.  If you want knots vMotion DAG works correctly, you might have settings described in this blog post extended the cluster heartbeat timeout (also a fully supported configuration change):

    http://www.thelowercasew.com/vSphere-and-Exchange-Admins-can-live-in-harmony-Microsoft-finally-supports-HA-and-VMotion

To answer the original question in this post, using the Protocol in-guest iSCSI is supported and with vMotion in this configuration is supported as well.  You're not really 'give up whatever it is' using this configuration well so if it meets your needs, I would stick with it.  I prefer generally VMFS just because of the flexibility it offers, but all the world has different requirements and I have absolutely no problem with guest iSCSI if your organization requires it.

Do not forget that whatever configuration, snapshots of virtual machine are not supported for Exchange. Here is another post which goes into detail on it and cover the declaration of support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 snapshots and machine virtual: http://www.thelowercasew.com/virtual-machine-snapshots-and-tier-1-apps-not-always-supported

So in general, I would say that provided you are running the correct versions of Exchange and vSphere must then take full advantage of your configuration to use features like vMotion and HA without problem.  If you adjust your settings accordingly cluster heartbeat timeout, you should have no problem using vMotion with your knots of DAG.

  • Migrate the virtual machine for Exchange 2010 from one host to another

    Dear members,

Please let know us if the migration of a virtual machine for Exchange 2010 is supported to an Esxi host to another, the Esxi version is 5.0.

There are unique Exchange environment with the role of hub, CAS and mailbox on the same virtual server. We have a maintenance window and we think moving exchange virtual machine from one host to another, but before that I need to be sure if it's supported my MS and do not want to have problems after, because I have also gotten to know here in the forums this snapshot for Exchange 2010 is not supported by Ms.

    Please notify.

    Kind regards

I'm not aware of any limitations with VMS Exchange migration. Anyway, you can consider running the migration during the low workload.

  • Is there an App for Exchange 2010 event entry specifying that TLogs are deleted after a successful backup?

We use the NetWorker to back up our system of Exchange 2010, once the backup is completed successfully, we expect to see a newspaper App entry indicating that the Exchange transaction logs (Tlog) are deleted (as we do with our Exchange 2007 - ESE backup system).

Although the Tlog files get deleted successfully, should there be an entry in the App events by telling us that in Exchange 2010?

Given the fact that you are not familiar with Foglight, you will need to get technical assistance d safe g involved working with you at this stage. Continuing this thread of discussion won't be effective.

  • If it is Possible to change the log for Exchange 2010 running on Esxi 5 drive

    Dear Experts,

We are running exchange 2010 on Esxi 5, this Exchange 2010 has recently been installed and all the mailboxes have been transferred from exchange 2003 which was a physical server. At the time of migration in exchange 2010 we created newspapers drive 100 GB since big newspapers vmdk is generated when you migrate the mailboxes. As now migration is performed a few months back and now I observed for 2/3 weeks, the behavior of the reader of newspapers for a week only 5 GB is consumed in disk vmdk of newspapers, and that is also supplemented with a backup complete weekly to Exchange.

I intend to ask, is that I think have newspaper vmdk 30GB instead of 100 GB, so the current of 100 GB of log reader, I can't reduce, but yes, I can create vdisk another to swap, but need advice if anyone has a similar experience to change the disk vmdk of newspapers for the Exchange? With this approach, I try to save 70 GB of storage space.

I hope my question is clear.

Waiting for your answers with the thoughts.

    Thank you

Yes, you must stop the Exchange Services. But Exchange 2010 has a nice Wizard to do this, who can stop the database services, newspapers move automatically and back up the database.

It is located under the Organization-> mailbox

Leave the database, but only to change the path of the log file.

  • What operating system to use for Exchange 2010?

I'm currently in the planning/design phase of implementation of our new Exchange 2010 server.  Our current environment using Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003.

Exchange 2010 is 64-bit, I want to install Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, but my question is... do I install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise?... What is the main difference between the 2 platforms, OS should I consider before decide me which one to go with?

I searched online for a while and can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question, or at least a logical explanation that would allow me to determine which is best for what I want.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    -Angel

The main difference between the medium Standard and Enterprise's clustering and memory. It was a big difference in Windows 2003, if you need more than 4 GB of memory. With Windows 2008 x 64 I think 16 GB of memory allows to use this grouping is the $ 64 question. You do cluster CCR or SCR with Exchange 2010?

Windows 2008 R2 Standard, Exchange Server 2010 Standard.

I read articles that say it could be antivirus causes this problem. I disabled AVG Antivirus and the same problem occurs.
I've also seen mentions of IPv6, I disabled IPv6 and the problem persists.

Interesting though, if I try to attach a file and I have let it fail and then select the button attach still opens a separate window of the Web browser and when I select a file this time it works. The first time her opens the window browser that it uses a Windows Explorer box the second time, opens a Web browser window. Can the M276nw of 200 HP LaserJet can be configured to scan to a network without initial setup of a PC folder? Without having first to connect the unit to a computer first.

We run a virtual environment and the printer will need to scan to a folder configured network and this should be done through the device. Of course, file permisisons will be completed before. I think I saw a manual where the Embeded webserver had this configuration, but would have to make sure, before committing to the purchase. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the printer supports the SMB Protocol indeed.

    Hi Mohamed

Well, I m bit confused. I'm going by what you have created a Local network.
In this case, the TCP/IP protocol must be installed. Additionally if the IP address is not automatically applied, you have to put (also the subnet mask, gateway).
However, you can try to use the fix in the Local area connection status.
In this case, you should in order to make a right click on the connection to the Local network-> status and repair.

Besides if this procedure doesn't solve this problem, please give us more detailed information.

  • Nexus 1000v, UCS, and Microsoft NETWORK load balancing

    Hi all

I have a client that implements a new Exchange 2010 environment. They have an obligation to configure load balancing for Client Access servers. The environment consists of VMware vShpere running on top of Cisco UCS blades with the Nexus 1000v dvSwitch.

Everything I've read so far indicates that I must do the following:

1 configure MS in Multicast mode load balancing (by selecting the IGMP protocol option).

    2. create a static ARP entry for the address of virtual cluster on the router for the subnet of the server.

    3. (maybe) configure a static MAC table entry on the router for the subnet of the server.

    3. (maybe) to disable the IGMP snooping on the VLAN appropriate in the Nexus 1000v.

    My questions are:

    1. any person running successfully a similar configuration?

2 are there missing steps in the list above, or I shouldn't do?

    3. If I am disabling the snooping IGMP on the Nexus 1000v should I also disable it on the fabric of UCS interconnections and router?

Thanks a lot for your time,.

    Aaron

    Aaron,

The steps above you are correct, you need steps 1-4 to operate correctly.  Normally people will create a VLAN separate to their interfaces NLB/subnet, to prevent floods mcast uncessisary frameworks within the network.

    To answer your questions

    (1) I saw multiple clients run this configuration

    (2) the steps you are correct

    (3) you can't toggle the on UCS IGMP snooping.  It is enabled by default and not a configurable option.  There is no need to change anything within the UCS regarding MS NLB with the above procedure.  FYI - the ability to disable/enable the snooping IGMP on UCS is scheduled for a next version 2.1.

This is the correct method untill the time we have the option of configuring static multicast mac entries on
the Nexus 1000v.  If this is a feature you'd like, please open a TAC case and request for bug CSCtb93725 to be linked to your SR.

This will give more "push" to our develpment team to prioritize this request.

Hopefully some other customers can share their experience.

    Regards,

    Robert

  • Hi ALL, did any attempt on the virtual computer NETWORK load balancing using HYPERV on UCS blades

I try to configure the CASE server cluster by using the Unicast NLB on the virtual machine on different blades on the UCS, it works for awhile, then he abandoned packages.

I heard that this screenplay of unicast is not supported in the UCS when she used END-host mode in the fabric interconnet...? any attempted before.

Would it, I use the multicast mode is that something needs to be done on the FBI62020 or the LAN switch upstream. ??

Header note I found on the implementation of UCS for mulitcast NLBL:

Microsoft NLB can be deployed in 3 modes:

    Unicast

    Multicast

    IGMP multicast

For series B UCS deployments, we have seen that the multicast and IGMP multicast work.

IGMP multicast mode seems to be the more reliable deployment mode.

To do this, the monitoring settings:

All NLB Microsoft value "Multicast IGMP" nodes.  Important!  Check ths by logging into EACH node independently.  Do not rely on the MMC of NLB snap.

An IGMP applicant must be present on the VLAN of NLB.  If PIM is enabled on the VIRTUAL LAN that is your interrogator.  UCS cannot function as applicant IGMP.  If an interrogator of functioning is not present, NLB IGMP mode will not work.

You must have a static ARP entry on cheating it upstream pointing IP address Unicast NLB on the multicast MAC address NETWORK load balancing.  This need will set up, of course, on the VLAN of the NLB VIP. The key is that the routing for the NLB VLAN interface must use this ARP entry as a unicast IP ARP response may not contain a multicast mac address. (Violation of the RFC 1812)  Hosts on the NLB VLAN must also use the static entry.  You may have several entries ARP.  IOS can use a function of 'alias' of ARP. (Google it.)

How Microsoft NLB works. -The truncated for brevity Mac addresses.

    TOPOLOGY OF NLB MS

NETWORK VLAN 10 = subnet 10.1.1.0/24 IP load balancing

VIP = 10.1.1.10 NETWORK LOAD BALANCING

Arp entry static switch advanced IP 10.1.1.10 upstream to MAC 01

NLB VIP (MAC 01, IP 10.1.1.10)

    NODE-A (AA, MAC IP:10.1.1.88)

    NŒUD-B (MAC BB, IP:10.1.1.99)

Using the IGMP snooping and interrogator VLAN snooping table is filled with the mac NLB address and groups pointing to the appropriate L2 ports.

MS NLB nodes will send the responses of IGMP queries.

This snooping table could take 30 to 60 seconds to complete.

Host on VLAN 200 (10.200.1.35) sends traffic to NETWORK VIP (10.1.1.10) load balancing

It goes of course to VLAN 10 interface that uses the static ARP entry to resolve to address MAC 01 VIP NETWORK load balancing.

Since it is a multicast frame destination it will be forward by the IGMP snooping table.

The framework will arrive at ALL NLB nodes. (NŒUD-A & NŒUD-B)

NLB nodes will use its load balancing algorithm to determine which node will manage the TCP session.

Only one NLB node will respond to this host with TCP ACK to start the session.

    NOTES

This works in a VMware with N1k, standard vSwtich and vDS environment. Where surveillance IGMP is not enabled, the framing for VIP MAC NETWORK load balancing will be flooded.

NLB can only work with TCP-based services.

As stated previously mapping an IP unicast to a multicast mac address is a violation implied by RFC 1812.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

Make sure your interrogator is working. Just to clarify that this does not mean that it is actually at work.

Wireshark lets check that IGMP queries are received by the NLB nodes.

Make sure that the ARP response works as expected.  Once Wireshark again is your friend.

Look at the paintings IGMP snooping. Validate the L2 ports appearing as expected.
