  If you talk to connect 2 machines by HDMI, which suggests that they are close together.  This virtual private network and Remote Desktop Protocol should work quite satisfactory on an ethernet cable.

  OS X is based on Unix, which means network and services are running "before the GUI is in place". It can run headless, who connected person and you can store files to the thing to your heart's content. From Lion, you can connect remotely to the screen sharing and use your account on a remote computer, rather that on 'look on the shoulder of the current user' which could be pretty useless at times.
