construction of a new 5.5 esxi

Hello

I am currently building a new server with ESXi 5.5, something I have never done before. I installed everything and it works well, except that the machines sometimes feel a bit slow. The drive is currently connected to the motherboard, no RAID, not anything, just to get some experience. Could someone please help me clarify the following:

-J' read the ESXi itself write performance are really bad, I can confirm that when I copied some already existing virtual machines to it, it took forever to get the across a gigabit in a NAS link. I mounted the NAS via NFS to the ESXi, but when I sent a machine directly to the host through the speed converter was also very slow.

-When I take a backup using VM Eplorer I see that the disc is fast

-When I copy large files inside the guest, I see that the copy is rapid until the cache of comments is full, after performance decreases significantly

I read forums and I found that I need a RAID controller with a cache of the battery to get a better speed. In this way, the controller puts cached data. But what happens if I copy a file large enough to fill the cache on the controller, the performance goes to lower even with the sluggish?

But the thing that me perplexed the most: if I install a Windows Server on the same computer and copy large files, I see the decline in performance when I fill the windows cache, but the writing speed is still about 70 MB/s, which is acceptable to me. The native ESXi writing speed is much slower than that. What happens there, whence the difference?

Kind regards

Krisztián

Thanks to all who tried to help me. Conclusion:

I hooked another solo drive in the small RAID LSI controller I have in one of the PCI slots, moved the files of virtual machine and I got the following result:

[root@leo ~] # dd if = / dev/zero of =. / teszt1G bs = 1 count = 1 oflag direct = G

records 1 + 0

1 + 0 records out

1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 12.032 s, 89.2 MB/s

[root@leo ~] #.

Which is more than satisfactory. Something is fishy with the drive or the controller on the motherboard.

  • How to create a new vswicht in esxi free 5.5

    Hi all

I'm setting up a freenas to a 5.5 free esxi Server vm. To improve the performance of the network, I was informed to dedicate one of my two network adapters to a new vswitch. However, after a lot of research, I am still unable to find any hint on how to introduce a new vswitch in vsphere 5.5 or any other way without using a paid for the software. It is impossible in the free version of esxi to do or I just do not work hard enough to learn more?

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Lukas

Setting up vSwitches is the same in free and paid versions. Select the host in the inventory, select network in the Configuration tab and then click on the link "Add a network..." "in the upper right corner of the window.

  • VCenter 4.1 can handle the new 5.0 ESXi hosts

    Hi all

Just to check with you people so vCenter 4.1 is able to manage and configure ESXi 5.0 hosts. I'll have a few new servers will be setup using vSphere 5.0. I am worried if his support. Travel to vCenter 5.0 plan is in the road map.

    Hello.

No, you will need to vCenter Server 5 to manage ESXi 5 hosts. It is documented in the matrix of interoperability of products.

    Good luck!

    Hello

Some of the issues that you might encounter include:

    1. The HP PSU has custom length cables and you'll leave a top mounted mounted power supply to a PSU background. You probably need a new power supply.  Extension cables are not cool.
    2. The new rear fan Cabinet is a different size from the rear fan HP. You may need an adapter.
    3. The I/O rear HP plate could be a problem.
    4. Connections on the front panel should be OK.
    5. HP USB2 ports on the motherboard are missing a ground PIN.
    6. If you install the optional fans in the case again then you must use a fan controller as the mother of HP and not set up to handle the optional fans.

    Good luck!

  • Problems with the new host VMware ESXi 5.0

We have a dell blade chassis, with 4 710 blades and 8 610 the 710's have 12 network cards and the 610's have only 6 network adapters. I added a new host on one of the 610's and two network adapters in each of the networks belonging to virtual infrastructure. 1 mgmt 2. ISCSI 3. vmnetwork

My problem is that the new host can see all the resources but I can't move the VM from the hosts to the host 610 710. I get an error because nic 2 on the 710 host is not in the same network as nic 2 on the 610. It seems silly that I wouldn't be able to do that just because the hardware is not identicle.

I have three vswitches, vswitch0 for management, vswitch1 for the iSCSI network of shared storage, vswitch2 for the network of the vm.

Material is not identical not should not have an impact.

The vSwitch port group to which are connected the NICs in question is named identically on both hosts?  If they have a different name, vSphere considers different networks.

  • slow performance on a new installation of esxi 4.1

After a certain time. My server esxi 4.1 loses so much network performance, when I try to connect with the vic, what happens to expired on matrices and "inventory loading" or when I do connect, after a minute or so, I get error messages saying esxi took too long to respond. I checked the logs, and they look fine to me. I also allocated 10 GB of ram for the 2400 Mhz to one of my 12 xeon cores and system. I have to allocate more resources to the system? What could be wrong?

Could be something in the motherboard which takes a few days to build up. Or it could be that newspapers are being filled with questions and just start to impact performance after x number of days. It could be also the hard drives that you use do not play nice...

See what an esxtop command gives you on the host when the performance starts to tank... You can connect directly to the ESXi SSH host (as with the application of sealant) once you have activated the option of remote tech support (SSH) via vCenter security... You can also enable this option if you are directly on the host server, in the form of color sort... It is in the actual configuration menu, is no longer necessary to use the command 'unsupported '...

  • Is it possible to create new roles on ESXi 4.0U1 Free Edition?

I have 1 ESXi 4.0 update is installed, and I would like to create some users that can interact with the virtual machine consoles, and that's all. I saw that there are 3 predefined roles: 'No access', 'Read only' and 'Administrator', but they all apply to the whole tree of permissions.

How can I create a role as a "Console", with only the privileges necessary?

BTW, I enabled SSH already, if that helps.

First, you must create all the users you want, by clicking on your host using vSphere client and go to the tab 'uses and groups '.

Next, go to the window ' home/directors/role Here, you can create a role, named console.

Finally, return to the display of the inventory, click the "Permissions" tab and assign to your users as a "Console".

For this role to "Console", you should give "Interaction Console" in the virtual machine folder and Interaction. They will be able to use the system on all the VM console in your tree. If you want to restrict the machine on which they can act, apply authorization "Console" on the folder/VM/Pool, you want them to see.

    I hope this helps.

  • New Dell servers ESXI 3.5 u3 or u4, ESXI 3.5

Will buy the Dell PE T610 but he says in the list of compatibility ESXI installable u4, not the others, then does that mean that the U3 install then upgrade to U4 will not work?

Publication for the 4 update notes specifically mentions the added support for processors Nehalem (Xeon 5500 series), so my bet is that no other ESX version will run on them. Even if you don't get a race if you're unlikely to get help because he is not certified.

  • Construction of a new Machine first, looking for an entry

    Hi all

I am building a new Machine of first, and I'm looking at some of the entries from which direction to head in.

My main question is what is more advantageous for a first machine. Less cores clocked more high, with more power CUDA, or more, lower the cores clocked, with less CUDA.

    Here are my two courses:

1 chip to Intel 3930 k Sandy Bridge six core clocked at 4.5 ghz

    2 x Nvidia 680 GTX in SLI

    32 GB of Ram

    256 GB SSD

    2 x 1 TB WD Black Raid 0

    1 x 3 TB WD Green Backup

    or

2 six main Intel E-1660 to 3.3 ghz

    1 Nvidia GTX 680

    32 GB of Ram

    256 GB SSD

    2 x 1 TB WD Black Raid 0

    1 x 3 TB WD Green Backup

First take advantage of the SLI?

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

    -Matt

Haven't seen that any criterion of reference again, but wise (Bang-for-the-buck) RE-ENGINEERING, E-1660 to around $1 K each, as well as the additional cost of the cost of the motherboard, memory and the lack of overclockability makes the Xeon solution very unattractive. See also http://ppbm5.com/DB-PPBM5-2.php

    I guess a single K 3930 to 4.6 GHz will outperform always a double 1660, and that's why I came up with this: http://ppbm6.com/Planning.html
