Conversion of 4i VMs on ESX 3.5 ESX

We are preparing to install ESXi on a new Dell R710 server. We have 3 guests ESX 3.5 running in production. I am trying to decide whether to install ESXi 3.5 or ESXi 4. We want virtual machines that are running on the ESXi box to migrate ESX 3.5 cluster if necessary. I looked the Converter release notes and sees no ESXi as a platform to source converter supported. He said vSphere 4, but I wasn't as sayint that esxi 4 has been supported.

So... If we want configuration VMs on our ESXi host and migrate running on ESX 3.5, should we simply install ESXi 3.5 or can converter downgrade our VMS in ESXi 4 ESX 3.5.

Let me know what your experiences have shown you.

Thanks, Aubrey

ESXi is a supported source and destination for VMware Converter.  When we support "ESX" This includes ESXi and "ESX Classic" people have come to know.

In regards to moving between versions... If you use vCenter 4.0 to manage these hosts, you can migrate them using the context Menu option "migrate."

The only restriction is to ensure that all virtual machines are built to specifications ESX 3.5.  i.e. vHardware 4 and no. thin disks.

  • Migration of VMs from ESX to ESXi 5.5 4.0

    Hi all

    What would be the best way to migrate virtual machines running cluster ESX 4.0 to 5.5 ESXi Cluster.

    In my view, there are two ways to do:

    1. Map (VMFS3) LUNS to the new cluster ESXi 5.5
      1. Shut down the virtual machine under the old cluster
      2. Remove inventory under the old cluster
      3. Add the VMFS3 LUN to the title of the new group
      4. Add the server to the inventory
      5. Power on virtual machines
      6. Perhaps svMotion machine virtual of VMFS3 new VMFS5 data store.
    2. Migrate the virtual via Vmware Converter Standalone Computer Cluster again.

    I think that method 1 would be the fastest, but I doubt if it is really practical, especially considering that the same data store/logic unit number will be writable by 2 different versions of ESX 4.0 and 5.5 at the same time.

    And method 2 seems the best way to me before that this will give me a possibility to start the virtual machine on the old cluster conversion failed if V2V or the destination virtual machine has problems.

    With above I have also considered possible vmotion, adding the former ESX host 4.0 under the pile of 5.5 ESXi but Xeon Intel processors are quite old and being unfit for vmotion, designed to allow CVS too, but for this I must put the new servers CPU up to the level of the old CPU and post migration of servers will have to close all VM to put all the servers again at their optimum level by disabling EVC.

    So could someone please guide which would be the best way, because we intend to migrate about 150 virtual machines. Thank you.

    between steps 1 and 2 take the new backups just in case. You have no need to have both writable for each cluster between steps 2 and 3 remove the volume from the old cluster. Also, between cold steps 4 and 5, you can migrate them to the new from the old storage.

  • Turn on a Linux 64 - Bit VMS on ESX guest VM

    Hi all

    So I had a Linux based OS (CentOS) of Vmware workstation. I want to put this in my ESX environment. If I try to "Import" of Vmware Converter, I get "Cannot determine the operating system". If I try to P2V, it won't work not (finds it difficult to install the Agent). I then tried to install Vmware Server (later) on one of my virtual machine (guest operating system) to my ESX host and try to turn this Linux 64 - Bit VM and tells me that VT is not enabled so 64 bit is not supported.  Obviuously is not recognize the chip of VT of the guest OS.

    Any ideas on what I can do to get this Linux based virtual computer in my ESX environment?

    Thank you

    Take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1000936

    And http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022152 is interesting to read this way. All that this article applies to a Windows 7 comments, a lot of the concepts are the same.

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1028042 talk about VMDK disk type conversion using the vmkfstools ESX command.

    One solution, you can try is as follows:

    1 copy the files VMDK Workstation on your ESX datastore use WinSCP or something similar.

    2. once all the VMDK files have been copied to all, try converting to a VMDK ESX type by following the instructions in 1028042 KB.

    3. once new ESX-type disks have been created in your vSphere Client, select 'New Virtual Machine'

    4. proceed through the wizard to ensure that you select the option "custom Setup".

    5. when it comes to the section on creating a disc, choose the option 'use the existing drive' and find the VMDK file that you created.

    6. If all goes to plan, you'll have a machine virtual bootable.

    Hope that helps.

  • Transfer of VMS to ESX ESXi's network

    We have a cluster with two nodes 3.5 update 4 where we have a production VMs.

    Developers have installed ESXi on a stand-alone machine that does not have access to a shared storage used by the cluster, so I have to find a way to move virtual machines from the ESXi host to the cluster on the network; It is okay to turn off the virtual machines while moving them.

    I was thinking about ssh (ftp or any other means, but using ESXi with no service console I don't know what the best thing to do, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way to do this, considering also that I've never used ssh to move the file so I need guidance here as well.)

    Thank you in advance.

    AFAIK, you can connect to ESXi and ESX and do directly. I use it to copy directly between the ESX servers. I have no ESXi, but that shouldn't make a difference.

    The tool uses SSH as a control channel, but the data is copied using FTP directly between hosts.

  • Best Solution to backup all the VMS to ESX 3.0 Server

    Dear admin,

    What the best solution for the protection of all the server/VM inside the ESX 3.0 server if equipment malfuction?

    As everyone has pointed out, HA provides defective material so really have good VMware ESX 3.5 HA, DRS and VMotion grouped where it gives you the flexibility to migrate VMs live/cold.  If you have already a San and 2 ESX hosts that can be made.  I would recommend that you add more memory to your hosts, because this is where performance counts.  You design with N + 1 in mind, which means at least that your standby hosts can manage all the virtual machines if it must pass dead server.  So, you could buy 1 server more or add more memory to contain virtual machines.

    VMware.com has good resources for architecture and planning on the new cluster check it out for more details or visit the VIOPS.

  • Cannot start the VMs on ESX 4.0 stand-alone host

    Hello

    We have two standalone ESX 4.0 host. They have recently lost power, and since then, we are unable to do anything with virtual machines.

    Security will not plug a laptop so I can't connect to a host using the vSphere Client.

    The command line, I ran:

    GetState \vm.vmx VMware-cmd < path_to_vm >

    VMware-cmd < path_to_vm > \vm.vmx start

    Both times, I get this error:

    vim.faul.HostConnectFault: unable to connect to localhost ({(vim.fault.No.Permission)

    dynamicType = < unset >;

    dynamicProperty = (vmodl. DynamicProperty) [].

    MSG = authorized to perform this operation was denied.',

    faultCause = < unset >

    faultMessage = (vmodl. LocalizableMessage) [].

    object = "vim. File: ha-folder-root',

    privilegeId = "System.View.

    })

    It seems that 'root' has lost its permissions to start the virtual machines! Unfortunately, the engineer who built the servers is therefore more around and there is no documentation for them. Can anyone suggest what that might be?

    Thank you Andre,.

    This is the user-error (shame on me).

    Before discovering the fault, I checked the article kb 1031192 and permissions in the file permission (or authentication) were right. -(1).

    It's been so long that I used ESX / Service Console that I forgot to do "su-" rather than "su root" from the non-privilegie account to the root account.

    When 'esxcfg -' orders have also failed, I Googled it and found the answer on the Blog of Simon long.

    (Google 'ESXCFG Command not Found' and found on simonlong.co.uk). This machine will not let me copy / paste so that I can not paste in the link!

    Well - I had the problem solved after that. Thanks for the reply!

    Have a great weekend people.

  • Start ESX 3.0.1 VMs on ESX 5.0?

    I have a number of volumes that contain virtual machines to a range of ESX versions - 3.0.1 > 4.1. I'm looking to do a migration in which I'll reproduce these volumes in a new environment, join the 5.0 ESX hosts and add all the virtual machines to the inventory.

    These earlier versions (i.e. 3.0.1) to tie up and boot on ESX 5.0? Then allow a VM tools / Hardware upgrade?

    PS I am not able to test this right now.

    vSphere 5 can read and play without problem the old VM (both VI 3.x and vSphere 4).

    So don't worry about it.

    My humble OPINION... just check if you have pictures... I suggest to consolidate before any upgrade.

  • How can I move VMs from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.1?

    The title is fairly free uses. I have an old ESX 3.5 with a few machines on this subject, I want to move to the new 4.1. How can I do this?

    Thank you.

    You have vcenter? If you cannot migrate from cold or storage vmotioin - otherwise just copy the directory of the virtual machine from one host to the other housing the host using something like WinSCP - and re-register on the new host. Alternatively, you can use VMware Converter to migrate the environment vSphere-

  • Problem with ESX 4 running VMS on ESX 4.

    I followed a guide, and I do not see the virtual ESX host once installed.  I already have 3 VM on the main host with 2 available network card.

    ESX 4 installed fine, but I can't ping or connect IP address.

    Verify that the setting for the mode promiscuious group switch or port on your physical esx server to which you connect to your ESX virtual server is set to "Allow" of security, it is not the default.  It should look like the screenshot attached.

  • Sharing multiple files Amoungst VMs in ESX 3.5

    I / we need to share files between multiple virtual machines.   I find that I am sort of stuck between the fact that ESX doesn't support NTFS and nothing but supports the ESX VMFS.  Ideally, what I would like is to have is a shared NTFS volume / share accessible to all computer virtual running Windows server 2003 or 2008 DataStore which has direct access, i.e. not going on the network, since it would decrease performance.  A shared VMFS data store would work, but in native mode Windows won't make the VMFS volume.

    Any suggestions?

    Without clustering technology, it is not practical to share a volume between several virtual machines.  Since each vm will think that the disc is owned by them, it will not recognize the changes made by any other virtual machine.  By example, if the vmA and vmB share a disc, and both start at the same time, they are both aware of the same data on this disc.  If after the start, vmA wrote a folder named test on drive, vmB will not see this change because it was not made by this virtual machine.  If vmB now writes a folder named test on the same disc, now you're in trouble.  vmA and vmB have both write a folder named test on the same disc.  Thus, no new file is seen by the other vm.  If you do not change all the data on the disc, then you will be fine, most of the time.  If you are trying to write, then you risk data corruption.

  • Defragmenation of VMs on ESX.

    Hello

    When I read the forums there is the Pro and cons of defragment the virtual machine in a virtual environment.

    We have some ESX using a HP EVA with a few LUNs assigned to our ESX.

    As I understand it is without official paper of vmware that says yay or no vm user defragment apps?

    Can there be a negative performance results when defragment a VM on a san lun?

    And these questions is made with the assumptions that no snapshots is enabled, and the guest operating system is Windows 200 x.

    Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

    Cordially Falk

    Where I am confused, the VMDK is already virtualized on a number of disks/metas etc. on a SAN network, so fragmentation will as seen in the operating system actually make much of a difference in performance?

    Why wouldn't defragment make a difference?  What is a San, it is a group of disks.  Yet your VM have files within a Virtual Machine systems.  Thus, filesystem fragmented just like a hard drive on your laptop.  ANY reduction wasted IO or access time is an increase in performance, so why not do it?  The SAN is not the problem, the file on Windows systems is, and since you can't defragment EXT3, Windows is notorious for fragmentation NTFS/FAT 32.  It doesn't matter whether or not it is hosted on a San.

  • 64 bit VMs in ESX/ESXi 4.0 that is running as a Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation 7.0.1

    I created an ESX4 host in VMware Workstation 7.0.1 as a Machine with 4 GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs and 1 (25 GB for installation) VMDK virtual and more later added 75 GB VMDK as an iSCSI LUN using openfiler.

    My vCenter Server runs as a Virtual Machine with SQL Express Edition 2005 DB.

    I want to install a Windows Server 2008 R2, which is a 64-bit as a virtual machine within the VM ESX4 embedded operating system. Is this possible?

    Hello

    as this comment by DOC from VMWare, in the 'internal' invited you will just be able to run 32-bit clients, never a 64 bit one.

    Best wishes / Saludos.
