  Hi I get this error reaches Max Volume Snapshots re trying to convert VMDK XP system with converter hotcloning latest version 5.5.1. Error results in the conversion of a physical machine to fail at 1%.

  I'm trying to convert a drive with a dual boot XP - 2 Xps on it for a Player 6 - a VMware VMDK as a C partition with W98SE original who no longer use.  The C partition has the bootloader boot ini for the dual Xps located on J and I have partitions.  Other partitions on disk cloning whole (need set as Xps access these disks at startup are: D, E: Docs program and shared (a logon for XP user profiles) and F, G and H (contains HD virtual 98SE VirtualPC) partitions.)

  I'm running a chkdsk /f /r on all partitions and deleted snapshots of volume system (from system restore) and disabled the system restore in case that is the question.  I also tried to disable firewall as shown in the manual and stop several 3rd party services to run.  Do not use additional options when cloning.  Target is a 1 to free space (more copy partitions/disc) on a USB external drive '3 '.

  I tried also with just J and no Partition selected with others and same error so not deliver the prob a system double - but do not know if the two will be not bootable in Vm together via boot ini choose as yet have on the physical machine.  Anyone know if this still works as a dualboot on VM or should I be cloning each with C separately like J or I become C as their drive letters are associated with many years of program installs don't want again.  Not sure if can fix these at the same time to be able to start or if on separate drives in the VM and always have access to all other partitions of two Xps - someone knows how to do better?

  Also re my mistake - it's mainly what need fixed so he can achieve it - or it will be allowed to do this conversion coldclone via Windows 8.1 I on another drive - however C drive I need appears as a V as W81 is C on the host.  This will allow even a dual boot VM or at least one of the Xps or bootable drive v - maybe if I move it to C partition 1st position when copying VMDK?  Please keep in mind I have no job and only will use VmWare Player 6 or try in VirtualBox or Hyper-V on the host Windows Pro 8.1 if VmWare Player fails.

  Alternative SOLUTION for those who have problems making their host Xp Vm hotclone

  I finally used MOA Cold Clone ISO converter to make a virtual machine of my XPs and related partitions and now finally it seems to work after the configuration of the virtual machine created with the latest Vmware converter 5.5.1 (just to add Vmware Tools and remove selected restore points) via my host Windows 8.1 (such that it is impossible to configure via MOA but fact VM thin image).

  Anyone with problems of manufacturing since their host XP VM and if want to make a VMware Player image - search the Internet for MOA Cold Clone converter (it uses a worm old VMware Converter 3 that allows cold cloning, I think that later to not)-it was relatively easy to install and use.

  I could also dual boot via the boot ini file as before my 2 XP systems.

  Make sure you just prΘconfiguration your ini file to start I did before the virtual machine to the physical host partition is on - I've added a few other partitions to start from tests in case of boot partition number has changed as he did.

  For example: my Xp scores came after the 1st Partition C (boot ini containing the partition) and also a 2nd Partition - D and 3rd Partition - E (I left out F and G as agreed is no need as on the host) so my first XP became Partition 4, then 5 other XP Partition so in boot ini, I had put this :

  You will need to change the number depending on how much other partitions are in front of your XP ones.

  I used free Easeus Partition Manager to control the order of the partitions I was cloning the drive.

  A free EasyBCD allows you also to modify and label your partitions to change your boot.ini file easily once you start in the right partition to boot ini that you set up above and before that you do / clone your Virtual Machine.

  Note: the boot ini can only contain a limited number of registrations or bloodlines tests then you partition carefully probably not exercising that your operating system will be on after cloning a Vm.

  I have a situation where I'm trying to move a sparse vmdk in another data store and convert them to a slim format in the process with Move-VM.  I am able to do it with the GUI successfully, but when I try to do it with $vm. Move-VM - Datastore $NewDS DiskStorageFormat - thin, the virtual machine is migrated, but the disk is converted to a thickness.  $vm is the VM object and $NewDS is the subject of the data store to a local VMFS data store that I'm moving the virtual machine.  The location of the sparse vmdk resides on an NFS share.  , My Version PowerCLI is 5.5R2.

  I could get this to work in a scripted manner using a LucD code snippet in this article (Move-VM to the cluster with DiskStorageFlag data store throws the error message.) but I just cut the section of cluster datastore.

  Did anyone else seen similar problems of Move-VM?  Seems to me that it may be a bug.

  You can try the host command line is:

  vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/source-ds/source-vm/source.vmdk/vmfs/volumes/target-ds/target-vm/target. VMDK

  You can optionally add thin d in case you want to that thin target to be configured.

  What you need to do - before running the command - is to ensure that the size of the disk in the hard file corresponds to the actual size of the LUN in case the LUN has been resized / increased at some point.

  Others said go the route VMDK is fully supported and can offer you more flexibility in your environment.  That said, it all comes down to your needs, so it is difficult for us to say that you should do one thing or another.

  Are you planning on using any SAN replication or snapshot with your Exchange databases technology?  Do you need to exceed the limit of 2 TB VMDK file size?  These and others are valid use cases for using physical RDM mode.

  Personally, I think that VMDK is a good way to go, but you should consider all your requirements before making a decision.

• Ways to convert VMDK files

  We recently had a server crash, and I decided to rebuild the server and put ESXi 4 on it.

  However, backups, I have old machines are on disks formatted in NTFS (not USB, they are in our backup machine) which means that they are unable to be mounted (AFAIK) under ESXi.

  The problem I have is that the VMDK files I have are the old version so not compatible with the curernt ESXi. I know I can convert them using vmkfstools (with i - pass memory) but I have two problems with this. First of all I have to bring to the ESXi server initially, and since we look at about 5 TB of data it will take FOREVER (been running for 2 days - even far complete) and the second is even if I get them on the server, I'll need another 5 TB of disk space to convert them to , which I did not.

  So my question (s)

  1 - is really not in any case to mount a NTFS (not USB) under ESXi drive - like that I could simply convert from the backup to store data (and easy) drive

  2. is there a converter of the VMDK files offline?

  3. is there a way to change the NTFS drive into a format readable by ESXi (ext3/resierfs/something) without losing data

  4. is there a way to optimize network transfers maybe?

  5. is there another solution that I could look at

  Whoa Whoa Whoa, back up the truck.

  You can use VMware Converter to do this and save yourself a TON of headaches.

  First of all, what version of VMware did you use ALREADY in the VM host? VMware Server? VMware GSX? VMware ESX 3.5 - 2? VMware Workstation?

  Second, do you have JUST the VMDK files? or are you support VMX files as well? If you do not the VMX, you have headaches on several levels. Converter needs the VMX file to know how many processors the virtual machine was, he had what hard drive controller, etc. to perform a proper conversion. If you do not have the VMX (and just the VMDK) files AND running ESX 3.x, you can redo the VMX file by doing a NEW VM on the ESXi 4.x server and attaching the VMDK file to it. You need these VMs as VM hardware version 4 (NOT 7), and 'best' guess as to what kind of equipment they had for the network card, card scsi, etc. This could put you in the right direction very fast and would be easy to test it on one of the smallest virtual machine if you had all tiny.

  Thirdly, what you used to get backups of virtual machines before?

  I am trying to understand the difference between above two disks. Documents from what I have found is VMware

  1. The mapping. A VMDK disk is a file within an a (hard) RDM and VMFS file system virtual isn't a mapping to a RAW LUN file (file system).

  1. Usability: Cluster VMDK disks is supported only in a box, but the virtual disks of RDM supports Cluster-in-a-Box and Cluster-through-Box.

  If the above is the only difference between them, which is the specific scenario when to go for each of them. If there is just no other difference please let me know.

• Convert vmdk thin provisioned thick, no risk of lost data on vmdk?

  Dear all,

  I need to figure out if it is possible to inflate a vmdk who was originally also thin stocked but now for some reason, we believe that it must be thick, is it possible now?

  -Turn off the virtual machine

  -Go to the virtual machine folder in the data store, make right click the vmdk and inflate

  -power on the new virtual machine

  Is this necessary? If the machine with two virtual hard drives and they both are thin, can inflate us both during the window of time to stop?

  Please share any possible problems into above account in the light of the case.

  Just a note: the article contains one sentence which IMO must be formatted in fat and Red:

  There should be no snapshots and the conversion is performed on the basic disk

  Check remove you / commit all active snapshots before trying to inflate basic disks!

  I have set up an installation of kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop just now and that you have customized, have all my development toolchains installed etc and set up but I would now move to a real virtual hard disk to a hard drive or rather partition.

  I use workstation 7 on windows 7 x 64.

  I was counting on the creation of a 30 GB ext4 partition that will only serve the hard drive for the virtual machine of kubuntu.

  but of course, I don't want to put everything again. so is it possible to have the kind of workstation to move the entire virtual machine in this new, real partition? or clone the whole to the partition vmdk, somehow so I can essentially remove the vmdk (and win those 30 GB back) and the whole system is run from the actual partition?

  Yes - you can use vmware - vdiskmanager.exe

  before use - stop the virtual machine.

  Open the vmx file used by this virtual machine and find correct filename used right now.

  This may look like

  ide0:0. FileName = "my vmdk.vmdk."

  or

  scsi0:0. FileName = "my vmdk.vmdk."

  Once you have this file name open a cmd and change directory where you have installed workstation.

  Type

  VMware-vdiskmanager

  This should popup help.

  Then type

  vmware-vdiskmanager -r "C:\path to my VM\my-vmdk.vmdk" -t 3 "C:\path to my VM\preallocated.vmdk"
  

  This copierait the vmdk existing in a new growable preallocated vmdk divided in 2 GB chunks. Type works well and it is easier to keep unfragmented then one-piece preallocated type.

• Problem of cluster Failover MS after physical RDM conversion to VMDK

  Last week I had to migrate 7 x 2-nodes virtual MS Failover clusters to a new data center. All clusters have been configured with the configuration of the cabin and all shared disks were in physical RDM mode.

  The target data center does not RDM disks so I had to convert all RDM disks VMDK files and use config before the migration of the IPC.

  I used vmkfstools to convert VMDK eagdrzeroedthick RDM files.

  5 clusters have been migrated successfully, but two cluster got strange question even if the procedure for all groups was the same.

  So in two groups, I have a problem where the second node in the cluster can not put online some of the shared disks. The first nodes in the clusters have no problem with the disks/SSP.

  But when I try to failover of all services, the second node may not bring online disc 1 or 2 shared, even if she can put the other shared disks online.

  VMKernel.log is not errors or warnings. I checked the configuration of virtual machines and everything seems OK.

  Any ideas what I could check?

  Just in case anyone else is facing the same problem.

  I could not find the root cause of the problem, even if it's without a doubt the conversion that triggered the problem. However, we found quite a simple solution - added new shared VMDK files, copied the files over and replaced the defective discs.
