Problem of cluster Failover MS after physical RDM conversion to VMDK

Hello

Last week I had to migrate 7 x 2-nodes virtual MS Failover clusters to a new data center. All clusters have been configured with the configuration of the cabin and all shared disks were in physical RDM mode.

The target data center does not RDM disks so I had to convert all RDM disks VMDK files and use config before the migration of the IPC.

I used vmkfstools to convert VMDK eagdrzeroedthick RDM files.

5 clusters have been migrated successfully, but two cluster got strange question even if the procedure for all groups was the same.

So in two groups, I have a problem where the second node in the cluster can not put online some of the shared disks. The first nodes in the clusters have no problem with the disks/SSP.

But when I try to failover of all services, the second node may not bring online disc 1 or 2 shared, even if she can put the other shared disks online.

VMKernel.log is not errors or warnings. I checked the configuration of virtual machines and everything seems OK.

Any ideas what I could check?

Just in case anyone else is facing the same problem.

I could not find the root cause of the problem, even if it's without a doubt the conversion that triggered the problem. However, we found quite a simple solution - added new shared VMDK files, copied the files over and replaced the defective discs.

  • Unexpected events of the virtualized Windows Cluster Failover?

I'm running into a problem where I see the unexpected events of failover on a cluster failover of Server 2008 running on four hosts ESXi 4.1.  ESXi hosts themselves are not grouped.  Each ESXi host running a single Server 2008 VM.  Each virtual machine has the latest version of VMware tools installed.

The problem is that, once every two days or more, one of the nodes in the Windows cluster release out of the cluster without apparent reason, which triggered a failover event.  So far we have not identified any root cause in any component of our infrastructure (eg. network switches etc.).  The VM guest that always falls out of the cluster during these unexpected failovers joined the cluster after a few minutes or more.  In the event of failure, the virtual machine that injects seems quite good other than the event of failure of the cluster (for example, the virtual machine does not drop even pings).  In addition, it is always a different VM that we see this problem with, it is not always the same.

Any ideas on what could cause this problem?  The thesis that we have currently is that there could be some problems with the cluster questions missed by Windows during the card NETWORK active/active configuration that we have on the vSwitches on the back-end.  We plan to change that active/passive.  VMware's recommendations one way or another?

I already read the article below as well as VMware MSCS on vSphere 4.1 guide, but none of them seem to deal specifically with underlying vSwitch configuration.  Any input on that?  Ideas on the thing we should look at?  Thanks for the help!

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002890

    Ahh, so that's another problem.

In the guide 4.1 MSCS, 'section, vSphere MSCS Setup Limitations limitation', he States:

With native multipathing (NMP), clustering is not taken in charge when the strategy of path is set to round robin.

  • SLES + OCFS2 shared physical RDM

I intend to install a cluster node Linux SLES OCFS2 using a RDM in physical mode 3.

I did this once before with both VM and set bus SCSI physical Division on the 1st virtual machine, and then for the 2nd server selected the 1st mapping VMDK file. This gave the desired effect to allow the physical RDM to be shared, but meant that vMotion was not possible for one of these two servers.

What I intend to do this time is to configure all the same VM 3, everyone has the physical RDM attached without bus sharing together on the SCSI bus.  This is possible, I think that, by setting config.vpxd.filter.rdmFilter to false before you add the ROW to each virtual machine. Then the anti-affinites rules will be set to stop 3 VM running on the same host. This should allow the sharing of the RDM OCFS2 and vMotion of virtual machines.

I think it will work. Can someone tell me if there are problems with it? Is this a supported configuration?

    Thank you

    Neil.

More than 2 nodes is not supported by VMware. OCFS2 supports more than two nodes. It has been popular with Oracle RAC, until everyone has opted for the DSO. While VMware does exactly what the no-MSCS Clustering support or requirements are. Most of the things are based on the limitations of MSCS clusters in VMware. I am about to implement a number of clusters for a customer with OCFS2, but will be limited to two nodes. We were just will you use FT for our high availability needs, but with the guest operating system as a single point of failure have failed to meet application SLAS.

Problems with word and PDF after crash

My computer crashed and I had to run the recovery disk, the repair option, so he could run again. It does not format my computer but I had to re - install several programs. I reinstalled my copy of office for example.  I have an external hard drive where I put most of my files but since installing the recovery disc, it does not open some Word documents and gives a message error "user has not access privilege." It's the same thing with some pdf files. What can I do?  Please help because I can't open some of my documents from the University.

    Hello world
I would like to just say thank you for your help and the problem is now solved.  In the end I paid someone to sort it out.  He explained that it was something like permissions for some of my files were owned by my old operating system and after that my computer crashed and I had to put through the recovery disc these permissions have been lost.  He told me that he had a program that looked for the old existing and re-installed.
    Thank you.

You cannot use the system back restore more than you have Restore Points. The only one
Another option would be to return the system to its out of the box, as it was when
you received. So, it would be better reset your e-mail settings and check with

To better understand the issue, I would need more information on your side.

    1. are you able to open other Apps of metro?
    2. What is the full error message?

This problem might have occurred because of these reasons:

    1. Corrupt the App Store.
    2. Incorrect settings App.
    3. Corrupt system files.

Try the steps listed here and see if it helps:

    Method 1:
I suggest to try the procedure described in the article to reregister the App Store and check if that helps.

  • Physical RDM virtual RDMs taken in charge in vSphere 6.0

Anyone know if this process in KB 1006599 works in vSphere 6.0 +?

VMware KB: Switching between physical and virtual compatibility modes in ESX/ESXi, a mapping of raw data

We are about to move a bunch of RDM to VMDK, but we need to convert physical to virtual RDMs first (you can live storage migration [to VMDK] with virtual RDM but not medical examinations). The other part of the story is that we are running vSphere 5.5 and are about to upgrade to vSphere 6.0

KB wrote on October 17, 2014 and I wonder if this is still the method support in vSphere 6.0 and that it has not been updated; or if it is no longer supported, in which case I have to do the migration before the upgrade?

    Thank you

I see no reason why this will not work in vSphere 6, given that the procedure is simply to remove the physical RDM disks and add them again as RDM virtual disks... In my view, that the KB is just outdated.

  • Limitations of architecture with replication of VM with physical RDM Mode

What are the Limitations of Architecture with replication of VM connected with physical RDM Mode in vsphere replication. Why VMware does not support this?

I will add some colors to the response of GS. A particular interest with regard to the physical path RDM (pRDM) works, summarize these two chips of the article:

    • Physical mode specifies minimal virtualization SCSI of the mapped device, allowing greater flexibility for SAN management software.
    • VMkernel passes all SCSI commands to the device, with one exception - the REPORT LUNS command is virtualized, so that the VMkernel can isolate the LUN to the virtual machine owner. Otherwise, all the physical characteristics of the underlying hardware are exposed.

There is an integrated in vSphere vSphere (RV) replication agent that has several functions. In particular, she keeps track of the Scriptures to the virtual machine. When a replication cycle occurs, the changed data is replicated to the target location. The VR agent should be able to 'see' These Scriptures to follow. Given that the physical mode all SCSI commands directly to the device, the VR agent is unable to follow these changes for replication.

  • PvSCSI adapter for physical RDM expandable disk using?

    Hi all

Can anyone here please indicate if the scenario below is supported for RDM physical disk with the extensible feature in the future?

    • Do not use the PVSCSI on a virtual machine running Windows with split volumes. Data may become inaccessible to the guest operating system.
