Converting FAT32 to NTFS

Have anyone of you already tried that? If so, what was the outcome? I have my Mac Boot Camp partition in FAT32 format. Unfortunately, I can't move the partition on a new and bigger hard drive without having to NTFS

As WinClone won't recognize FAT32. I fear of incompatibility with some applications after the conversion, as is common on Windows operating systems. Thank you...

Convert FAT to NTFS

Q: is it possible to convert a hard disk FAT32 to NTFS without losing all the data on the disk? I like to change FAT32 to NTFS, my operating system is Windows XP PRO, how can I do this? Without the loss of my programs?

Standard A: utility in Windows that is called CONVERT serves this purpose

Just go to the command prompt and run the command:

C:\ > CONVERT C:/FS: NTFS

Where C: is a name of the drive you want to convert.

After machine re-boot conversion process will start and you'll have your FAT32 converted to NTFS without data loss.

Hello

Unless the request is on the filesystem directly, there should be no problem.  It is however to all individual applications.

  • Why can't I convert my FAT32 to NTFS file system in Win XP SP3?

I want to move to Vista and Windows 7.  When I ran the upgrade for Vista, I was told that I had to do a clean install and upgrade option has been disabled due to the FAT 32 from my hard drive file system.  I can't wipe my drive because I have a bunch of stuff and I don't have the storage means to do so.

I followed the instructions on how to convert without data loss, but when I arrived at the command line and entered ' convert c: / fs:ntsf "I got a message that the drive had to be dismantled and that it translated when I rebooted.  So I've done that and restarted.  The blue screen came and began to convert.  Then there were a bunch of error messages regarding bad sectors or bad files and that it could not be converted.

I then ran chkdsk and chkdsk /f.  The first chkdsk says that there are errors, but they would not fixed because I didn't run with the extension/f.  So I did this and then said that he had to do a restart.  So I restarted and the chkdsk took forever.  When I got back to my office, I ran the line convert again and now I get something along the line of FAT32 and NTFS conversion are not available.

So in addition to abandon and wipe my drive, how can I fix my drive?  Of course, chkdsk /f has not helped and not more than chkdsk/r.  I tried the magic of partition, acronis, and anything else I can get my hands.

    What should I do now?

    Hi sweetp267,

Try these steps and check the result.
    a. connect to the admin user account.
    b. Click Start, run, type cmd and click ok.
    (c) in the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER: CONVERT C:/FS: NTFS /V
    d. check the difference.

The /V will verbose mode and can give more information, if it fails. A restart will be required because the drive is currently in use by the operating system.

Difference between material FAT & FAT32?

First, note that there are three varieties of FAT: FAT12, FAT16, and
FAT32. Many people call just FAT16 FAT, because before that FAT32 is out.
FAT16 is the only variety used for hard drives, so just
    The FAT was not enough.

FAT12 (hardly any more used) had a maximum volume size of 12 MB.
It has been used almost exclusively for floppy disks.

FAT16 was used on hard disks (or partitions) up to 4 GB and had a
cluster size which varied from 2 KB to 64 KB, depending on the size of
the partition. It serves almost never again, because almost nobody does
a as small as 4 GB partitions.

FAT32 FAT16 succeeded and has a maximum drive size of 2 TB. His
maximum file size is 4 GB, which explains why you can't copy a file of 5 GB to
it. its cluster size is 4 KB up to an 8 GB partition. Beyond 8 GB the
cluster size develops up to 32 KB.
NTFS, that's what almost everyone should use on their hard drives
today. Its maximum volume size is 2 ^ ^ 64-1 and its maximum file size
16 × 1024 is ^ ^ 6 bytes (much more than the bigger hard drive available
today). Cluster size is 4 KB, regardless of the size of the volume.

I have a disk full of files, and it is in the FAT32 file system. As I can't copy large files (5 GB +) in this player, I intend to fix this by changing the file systems.

    Good! You should.

Apparently, it is not possible to do it without formatting.

It's not correct. To convert to NTFS, use you the CONVERT
command. But first read http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm , because
There is an important question about the size of cluster that is not obvious.

Also note that conversion is an important step, touching everything on your
drive. When you take a big step, no matter how unlikely it is
always possible that something can go wrong. For this reason, there
careful to make sure that you have a backup of everything you can not afford to
    lose before you start.

  • Format an external hard drive (1 TB) FAT32 in NTFS file system

    Hello
I recently bought nine Transcend (TS1TSJ25M3) 1 TB External Hard Drive

who is in the FAT32 file system. There are currently 930 GB of free space available. I decided to convert
it to NTFS File system. So first of all, there is no data in thePlayer(it's free)
Second, how much space will get after the formatting in NTFS file system?
And third: is it possible to do it on Windows 7 64-bit OS, or do I have to use another OS?
Please I need answers to my doubts.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive and select Format. Choose NTFS as method in shape.

You will have 930MB after formatting. The rule is that you have 7% less space than the nominal capacity, which allows the difference between the ability of manufacturers of discs (1 GB = 10 ^ 6) and the ability of Windows (1 GB = 2 ^ 10) and space unusable, drawn upward by the method in shape.
  • Convert FAT to NTFS WITHOUT FORMATTING

I have a machine rt surface that has a micro SD card that has a lot of data.  I want to convert to NTFS without formatting the SD card.

On my RT surface when I do

    convert/d:/FS: NTFS

    It is said

"CONVERT is not available for EXFAT drives.

The reason why I want to convert, is that in OneDrive if I try to change the SD card slot, and then a disc insists that the volume must be NTFS.

I do not have a PC on which I have micro SD slot, so I can't move this to my other machines and perform the operation there.

I'm sorry to say, it doesn't look like a good way to do it without putting the data on the card at risk. The only way I think it could be done, is to copy the data somewhere else or save it, then reformat the card, then copy the data on the map.

    Sorry for the bad news.

  • is it possible to convert an external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS?

I have a WD 1 TB HARD drive with FAT32 extension and I try to copy files larger than 4 GB (which does NOT support the FAT32). I've been looking for a solution and I found that the best solution is converted to NTFS.

My questions are, is there another way? If there is no other way, is there a possibility of data loss? How to convert?

Convert to NTFS will not result in data loss (of course, there is always that chance but it is not intended to do and I haven't heard any problems with how it works under Vista) If you follow the instructions below.

There is no other way if you want to copy the largest filses - only NtFS that will allow.  NTFS is better anyway because it also gives you more options seciurity and is better designed (in addition to being able to handle files of any size).

    Here is the procedure: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Convert-a-hard-disk-or-partition-to-NTFS-format.

    I hope this helps.

Your description of what you did does not sense, so it is difficult to determine what are the things to the State in so it is difficult to give you advice on how to solve this problem.

As a first observation, although when you got first the reader he might well have been formatted in FAT32, storage of files on it has no "Edit."  Because Windows understands FAT32, files would have stored on the HDD external and recovered as usual.  However, FAT32 imposes a 4 GB file size limit, so if you work with video, you probably want to reformat the drive to NTFS.  Sure, reformatting the drive erased everything that was on the disk, so I hope you kept your files to their original location before formatting.  If you format the drive without saving files AND that you have not used the drive, you can recover the data by using a tool likeRecuva data recovery.  Of course, the recovery of a 1 TB drive will take time...

Please, step by step in detail what you were doing as "the process of change to ntfs.

Please describe what shows disk management, in the upper pane, both in the lower pane.

There should be 10 columns in the upper pane:
    Volume
    Page layout
    Type
    File system
    Status
    Capacity
    Free space
    % Free
    Fault tolerance
    Overhead

The lower pane should have a color bar (or bars) that indicates if the space is used as a partition primary, unallocated, etc..  You can see the colors associated with different types on the view > settings > appearance tab.  The lower pane should also indicate if the drive is "online".
