Corruption of the BIOS to the Satellite M40

Hi all.

I have an old laptop Toshiba Satellite M40 with damaged BIOS which of course does not start. TI powers drop down 3 sec after power, which means that it does not pass the test STATION. I understand various forum that it is not the competence of technicians ASP and I'm not ready to hear things like 'replace maother Board' of these guys.

I heard talk about techniques that can reflash the BIOS in the CMOS memory using a floppy drive loaded with a version of BIOS.

The computer is in pretty good condition, including a new 80 Gb HD and was working fine until I tried to update the BIOS. I think it should be fix and spend a few hours on it.

Any ideas on the issue were greatly appreciated.

Hello

I'm afraid that you are ready to hear just a positive thing or what. Are you here to have the real discussion or you want to hear a fairy tale. You wrote in your ad that the BIOS is damaged. I guess that you know very well what should be done with pieces of damaged equipment.

How you want to reflash the BIOS if your laptop is running in only 3 seconds. Please be serious.

    Hello

I m a M40 owner but I did not install Vista on this unit. I use the XP.
I have not installed Vista on this unit because according the Toshiba document I found in this forum the Toshiba drivers are not available and I n t think that this driver will be available in the next time, or any time for this series of laptop.

Is the laptop has Vista capable sticker? I don t think so :(

  • Backlight is disabled until the power management software is loaded on the Satellite M40 - 295

Greetings to all members of the forum.

I am owner of ten months a Satellite M40-295. My problem is the following:

When I start my computer the backlight is disabled until I go into Windows and the power management program is loaded.
After that the backlight of the screen lights up. I tried to change the brightness with Fn-F6/7 and screens using Fn + F5 without success.

Init information (init messages, such as the Toshiba and Windows logo) appears on the screen (I checked it under the intense light and the screen from another angle of view), so the adapter seems to work properly.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Evangelos

I'm afraid that now, you have a problem. If the unit won't start the BIOS chip is probably damaged. In my opinion BIOS update was bad idea.

Right now I don't want write something on the screen because now it is not important at all. Please contact the customer Service of your country partner and let check the device. Sorry, but I'm 99.9% that the unit is now completely screwed.

If the appliance shows any sign of life is the case for the service. :(

  • Peripheral USB do not work correctly on the Satellite M40 313

I have a Satellite M40 313 I bought there are about 1 1/2 years and have had some problems with.

However, I recently bought a Canon S3 IS and a Buffalo portable HD here in Japan, where I currently work.
These two devices do not work with my computer.

Attach the HD produced the message that this device will work better with a USB 2.0 high speed Port, before XP decides that the HD is actually a keyboard HID device! The camera mount, for which I had installed the software provided, will produce a message that suggests that I have install usbscan.sys file and forces me to use a driver of generic digital camera that does not work with the Canon camera.
I fetch the requested file, but it made no difference...

It seems that it is a problem of USB, and I also noticed that some of my friends devices USB do not work well with my computer.

In this case, what is the best way to update my software so its compatible USB? Have I been dismantled down to the USB 1.1 version by WIndows at any given time? The pilot on the hub root 5.1.2600.2180 and is dated 07/01/2001.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Hello

Perhaps a biosupdate could help you? I mean it s do not know if is it a hardware problem or software, so that you can first try to check if it s a software linked history by:
    1.), updated the Bios
2.) recover the system with the recovery cd (backup your data first!  ;))
3.) install the latest drivers (do not install MS updates or patches, sometimes they cause errors)

If you have no success after completing these steps, and then give a few comments.

  • What is max capacity of the HDD on the Satellite M40-101

What is the maximum capacity of the disc HARD can be installed in the laptop M40-101?

To my knowledge, some of the Mobile Satellite M40 were shipped with the hard disks of 80 GB (IDE).
I didn't find any official Toshiba information about supported tough max, but I guess you should be able to use the 100 GB drive HARD; Maybe a 120 GB HARD drive too.

Seems that you have to test.

  • Question about updating BIOS for my Satellite M40

So, my laptop does not start, but works recovery procedure. Support suggested me to update my Bios.
OK, given that the last time, it was easy.

    I downloaded the newsest version vor my Satellite M40 (PSM40) (1, 70 - WIN<= i="" have="" an="" ati="" grafics="" card)="" and="" extracted="" the="" bios-20070709161345.zip="">
    But there was a surprise:
Instead of getting the old data structure, as written in the FAQ update Bios
1 extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
    2. in the folder temporary three subfolders will be generated. "docs", 'Update - 3.5' disc', 'Update - CD - R or CD - RW"

I get a file only: BIOS of Windows Knockhill10GV170.exe
Extraction of it I get 8 files:
    -fdbase.img
    -InsydeFlash.exe
    -iscflash.dll
    -iscflash.vxd
    -KPM170. ROM
    -Platform.ini
    -The c:\windows\system32\unicows.dll

Now my question: How can I create this bootable CD-ROM to update my Bios?

Just to know: download all the other things are done on my desktop from my laptop is not starting ;)
I also tried to run the exe in the hope that it will create a floppy disk or a CD-ROM, but it is written "basic cfg address not found."

    Hello

Update the BIOS there are two ways to do this:
-Traditional mode (TRAD) and in this case, you need floppy
-Windows (WIN) and this update can be done under operating system running.

Update BIOS WIN will work if you run Windows on your laptop satellite. If I understand your assignment well you are trying to do traditional BIOS updated, but using the BIOS to WIN update. On the Toshiba download page, there are two listed BIOS updates and two of them as versions of WIN. This means that you can update the BIOS under operating system only.

Back to your problem: in the history one thing confuses me when you write: my laptop does not start, but works recovery procedure. Sorry, but if the recovery procedure is working and you will have clean installed OS.

Be a little more concrete in our laptop does not start. What happen exactly when you press the power button / stop?

I think the latest BIOS for your M40 with ATI Radeon graphics card, it's the 1.70 version that is available in Windows and traditional format.

There is a version 2.00, but it's only for the M40 with Intel graphics card.

    Hello Afonso
I understand your feelings... believe me.
    Then...
    (1) you did to be sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed?
    (2) are you sure in the DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration are enabled (dxdiag)?
(I know it sounds too simple, but perhaps you forgot to chek these: D)

    (3) have you tried to format and reinstall the operating system?

  • I can't retrieve the Satellite M40 (M45 in the United States)

I put Ubuntu Linux on the laptop using the bootloader Grub 1.5.

Then... I did something stupid. I used Partition Magic to increase the space for Windows. I don't mind losing any data, or nuking the drive and put back in operation, but it does not seem possible?

When I put a boot disk (if recovery, Windows or Ubuntu) I get "Grub Error 17 1.5". I changed the boot options to boot from the CD first, but for some reason that always happens, and bios is kind of limit on what I can do. Now on the software still works, but I don't know of anyway have a boot disk.

Help! I hate the idea that I have fried my phone on a software problem? :(

    Hello

I m not an expert in Linux but for as far as I know this error message appears if the boot partition is available, BUT the file system is no more recognized by GRUB.

If you try to boot from windows to check the grub.conf file contains entries
root (hdX, Y) (or rootnoverify (hdX, Y)) and (hdX, Y) chainloader + 1

    See also grub manual;

  • Re: Where to find the drivers for satellite M40-110

I need the right updated drivers (especially since the update of the Bios) to M40 - 110, but the official site there are only drivers for M70 M100 &... WHY?
    I need the drivers now.

    Hello

There is a simple explanation, why you can't find the drivers for the Satellite M40 in the area of the laptop.
The old series of mobile have been moved to an area of ARCHIVE of the page of European driver of Toshiba.

So if you need the drivers, go to the ARCHIVES-> Satellite-> Satellite M Series-> Satellite M40

    ;)

Can I use a power supply on my Equium M40x if it says it is compatible with the Satellite M40 series? The two laptops are similar, and the image of the card looks the same as the one I had. The part number is PA3378E-3AC3.

    Hello

the satellite needs a power adapter 65W and 19V.
Your power adapter output performance is too large (75W), you should not use it to avoid damage to the satellite.

    Hello

For WLAN and WIFI configuration you can use the Windows settings. In this case, under connection WLAN properties, you will find an option called display the icon in the tray... when it is connected you can see a small symbol shows the power of the signal.

While you can do if you use the Intel wireless client. If you n t have one that I recommend you visit the Toshiba WLAN website under http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/

You can find the most recent driver for your WLAN card including customer Intel wireless that allows you full control of your home network. Install this client and you'll get what you want.

  • Satellite M40 - 307 (PSM44E) BIOS update

    Hello
    I'm actually having a satellite M40-307 with a BIOS version 1.2.
Many of them came with BIOS v.1.3.
If someone is having a 1.3 or a higher version of BIOS, I want to send him a Toshiba util to send me its firmware.

    Concerning

    Hi Etienne

Don t think that a series of Satellite M40 PSM44E were shipped with the BIOS 1.3 or higher.
Series only the BIOS 1.2 is available for the PSM44E. It s on the page of the Toshiba driver.

Of course, you will also find an other BIOS updates; v1.7 and v2.0
But these versions are released for other Satellite M40 series and are not compatible with the Satellite M40 * PSM44E.*
