  We basically have a "mail merge" to our list of customers with an interactive PDF file (including videos, menus, etc. - not only form fill and web links) to create a single PDF that contains several pieces of mail... one for each customer... with each total mail being customized for this customer.  Customizations would include different greetings (Bob dear, dear Dana, etc), as well as the different graphs based on unique data to the client, photographs, etc.

  I saw that InDesign and Acrobat Professional can be used to create an interactive PDF (such as http://tv.adobe.com/watch/ask-the-adobe-ones/14-calling-rufus-about-interactive-pdf-making).  But I don't understand how I can insert data into a database, csv, excel etc. in the PDF file file so that each page, or each set of pages in the PDF file can be customized.

  I'm new on this and didn't know InDesign could do a data merge, thank you for pointing that out.

  However, we currently produce hundreds of thousands of personalized daily electronic documents, a PDF file or Web user interaction (no, this isn't spam or junk mail).  Our customers have asked us to focus on the generation of personalized interactive PDFs and I fear that the volume could overwhelm InDesign.  My other concern is that all of our work performed automatically (we run hundreds every day) and it is not possible to have a person to sit down, then run InDesign manually for each job.  Our standard operating system need a certain version of unix (AIX or linux), although we can perform tasks under windows if necessary.  It seems, as InDesign will fit in this environment?  If not, is there something else out there?

  Using the SaveAsPDF Road will allow you to do this. For the 3D stuff, you must also ensure that your edition > Preferences options are set to support these functions.

  If you use the route Print to creatr a PDF file, thn you need to check the option 'Generate Acrobat data' to make interactive PDF files.

  Once you have created the button, you set the action as "submit a form". When you add to that, you will be asked to enter the URL. You must type mailto: follow-up to the e-mail address you want the end user to send it to. For example, if your client/colleague wants the form to be sent to them and their email address is [email protected] then you would enter

  in the URL box. You want to make sure to only select the PDF option, which attaches the whole form to the e-mail address.

I know how to create an interactive PDF which allows to highlight from scratch using InDesign and Acrobat Pro, but Im trying to figure out how to scan a document, have acrobat (or any other program if one works better) identify the text and create an interactive PDF based on that.   Have you use Save as or save just. Record keeps all the graphics with what you were doing, not just the OCR. SAVE AS band information is no longer used after the OCR process, i.e. If you use ClearScan directly in the PDF file. Two other methods of OCR, place the OCR in a layer behind the original graphics and no space, but add the layer of OCR for research. The success of the OCR process depends on the resolution of quality and analysis of the original analysis. If you have something like the equations, you can get a lot of damage it. AA X supposedly much improved the OCR process.

  You can't use InDesign, it's just an example of something that you could use. It would probably be better to use something that you already have experience with.

  Once you convert the document to PDF, you can open it in Acrobat and have it automatically detect the form fields by selecting: forms > Start Wizard forms

  It will attempt to identify where you intend to add form fields, but there is usually a good bit of customization to do later. The alternative is to manually add the form fields yourself by selecting: forms > add or edit fields

  You can use the forms tools to add text fields, check boxes, buttons, etc. There is a lot of information in the doc help Acrobat on the creation and modification of form fields.

  You can send a form, but if users have Reader they won't be able to save data that they fill in. They will be able to present data, but only in xml format.

  If you drive to activate the form allow users drive to back up data, then data connections is disabled.

  AutoFill is the easiest part, he lies. If both fields have the same name, they will have the same content: type in one and it appears in the other.

  I am trying to create an interactive directory which has several hyperlinks; Some go to a destination in the pdf file, some go to an e-mail link and some dial a phone number.   I read the instructions wrong? I have a 116 page book. When I export to PDF for printing, it exports correctly, showing a page at a time. When I export to interactive PDF, pages come out as single large pages, and I find myself with a book of 58 pages in landscape format. I tried all the settings. Yes, I chose 'single page' in the area of the layout (if I select 'Two up', I find myself with 4 pages on the screen).

  What attracts almost everyone by surprise. It's actually by design, but judging by the posts here not necessarily the best design decision. There are two ways to address this via script. Active / disables the export function extends offshore for interactive PDF export (see Interactive PDF from InDesign CS5 always a extends on |) InDesignSecrets).

  Another method is to divide the "spreads" before exporting it ("see InDesignSecrets" Blog Archive"Breaking Pages Apart to bleed off the coast a thorn and http://www.printisrael.com/indesign/scripts/freeware/SeparatePages.jsx).

  There is nothing you can do to prevent a viewer to navigate on their own through a PDF file. One method would be to open the PDF file in mode full screen, this hides the navigation tab. But a viewer can use arrows to go from page to page, ignoring the links in the PDF file. And the viewer can hit the ESC key to return to the normal display. Another option would be to use a swf export, pdf indstead, but seriously depends on how you plan to distribute this portfolio.

  You can manually retrieve to individual PDF pages and then combine them into a single PDF file. Exactly how you do it depends on which version of Acrobat you are using. For example, in Acrobat 9 you would ' Document > extract Pages ', then ' file > combine > merge > merge files into a single PDF ", and you will then have to rearrange the pages. If you need to do this a lot, you can automate the process of extracting the pages using a batch sequence and a bit of JavaScript.
