  My Early 2011 Macbook pro worked extremely slow for a few months.  He is lagging in the start-up and opening of all applications.  It also happened to coincide with my Wifi, refusing to recognize my Macbook, he repeated that a device was already on the network with the same IP address. I tried reseting the IP address several times.  But since he has never done this on other networks I received a new router this week and have not had a problem until now.

  CPU: Intel Core i7 (2.5 GHz, 8 MB L3, 4 cores, 256 KB of L2 cache cache)

  Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6770 M 1024 MB

  Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (my upgrade using OWC RAM)

  Storage: Hitachi 750Go HD, 7200 RPM

  Battery *-he won't hold much fees and I always keep connected when possible because battery just does not last too long.

  But touch wood... except for the battery, I am happy with this old trick: the performances are quite good (with latest OS X 10.11.3).)

  It is interesting to invest in some hardware upgrades that it would rejuvenate significantly?

  I think the following (with the current prices of OWC):

  -new battery $99

  -SSD, 480 GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G $195 (it is $ 63 less than equivalent Extreme Pro)

  -1 TB HGST HD 7200 RPM $98 (with cube data, to be installed in the region of CD)

  TOTAL: $392 (I cut this to $287 if I cut half of SSD and HD capabilities)

  Opinions? My only concern is this new h/w were in a 5 year old laptop, how does life have left? Will be an investment to upgrade the h/w wasted because of other failures in 2 years?

  First of all, longevity... some still run their lighter systems 2008 as web browsers and other tasks.  My MBP 2011 sends this message.

  Second... An old battery is just that - something to be replaced instead of a 'sign of death.  I would like to replace it immediately at an Apple Store... old batteries can swell and damage case/keyboard/trackpad.  Maybe not, but it happens quite often.

  As for HD... all the spinny readers die subsequently.  You are wise to consider a replacement.  My 2011 MBP has a Crucial MBP (OWC is also a very good drive, and get the non-Pro is not a bad decision, if the Pro is not necessary).

  Basically if it's 'OK' outside the farm, the SSD will be much faster and the battery will allow it to better function as a portable device.

  < EDIT > The SSD you put into the 2011 models are 2.5, which can be reused in external speakers if the 2011 becomes unsustainable future (could happen).  So the SSD is definitely NOT a waste of money.

• 2011 Macbook Pro late since the SSD upgrade

  Hello world. Just a heads-up that is my first question. Also, I like to think I'm good with computers but I'm no computer programmer, so I will try to describe my problem the best I can. My friend (who does) has updated my macbook at the beginning of 2011 pro with an SSD (brand is Crucial and 480 GB). As a side note we also tried with a Kingston brand and had the same problem. I'm pretty confident, that it was installed correctly. Since the upgrade, some functions are faster. For example open Google Chrome is faster than before the upgrade. I have problems when I look at the files and the use of the files stored on my hard drive. For example, when I watch a video that is saved on my hard drive on VLC (Quicktime) it will freeze all the minutes for at least thirty seconds. Also scroll through files Finder can lead to this gel. We are not quite sure what the problem is (my friend, so that good with the Mac is more of a PC guy). I saw other people posting here and thought maybe you all could help! I noticed that EtreCheck is very popular, so I made one of these reports for more details. I appreciate any feedback you can offer

  I had a similar experience (occasional random delay of tens of seconds) upgrade my 13 "2011 MBP ("8.1"model), but my SSD was MacSales (Other World Computing). Their customer support has been excellent. They had me download and run a program of comparative analysis (Quickbench; it was free for me but apparently now costs $15) who served the SSD and allowed them to diagnose the problem as a bad 'HDD cable. I was dubious, but I went to an Apple store nearby, and after a lot of hassle, pushed them to replace the cable and that fixes the problem.

  Of course, you might have a different problem but the defective hard drive cable is apparently quite common and appears only when you use SSDS (because of the faster transfer speeds, I guess).

  As I recall (it was several years ago), the first Apple tried to make me pay $60 for the cable, more work, before they admitted he was covered under AppleCare. It is easy to replace. iFixit carry the cable and has great instructions to replace, but they seem to be out of stock at the moment (they have a button "Notify Me" for when it becomes available again). Try a local supplier of Apple authorized (use the Locator).

  When you get your SSD is working properly, I hope that you will be very happy with it. It makes a huge difference for me.
