Datastore on ESXi 4.1 disk space monitoring

Hi all

I use HP SiteScope to monitor our data warehouses.  I use a simple script monitor to bounce back against our servers ESX 4.0 who runs the command of vdf to return the size used, available and percentage used.  When I call the script I pass data with her store name.  This is the content of the script.

sudo/usr/sbin/vdf /vmfs/volumes/$1

This returns the following:

1 k-blocks used available use % mounted on file system

/ vmfs/volumes/4c14635a-8d723b1c-031c-0844324ssa05f3

419168256 117296128 301872128/vmfs/volumes/MY_DATASTORE 27%

Then, I am able to use these measures to make reports and alerts if a certain data store is full.  This is a Lab Manager environment development so sometimes people accidentally create too many virtual machines and their warehouses of data to run out of disk space.  Where the reason why we need oversight from a perspective of data store.

Now enter ESXi 4.1.  The command vdf no longer accepts the name of store data as an additional argument.  I tried a number of different things but do not seem to find the right solution.

So basically I just need the same measures and be able to run for each of my stores of data.  Does anyone know a different way to this collection through the command line?

Thanks in advance.

Billy

with ls - lh mutual data store name, you can

and you can see with df h size.

but I believe that the best solutions is witch with VMA command line.

Hi, I'm wondering how to do this as efficiently as possible. I have 100 + VMs on different subnets, some behind firewalls etc. Is there a way to monitor the disk space on the virtual machines using Virtual Center/VMware tools?

Well the proper way would be to monitor free disk space of in virtual machines as you would on a physical server. However, there is a script that can integrate this information in VI, using the toolikit to perl:

  • ESXi Datastore out of disk space

We have a problem with a host, saying that it is running out of disk space.  We have three servers that are running on it and cannot start one because we get an error there is not enough disk space.  We took a virtual disk from one of the servers for free space, but it seems not to have worked.  The data store shows that there is no available disk space.

How can I get the host to see the virtual disk from one of the guest has been removed?

    Thank you

Unless you have selected "remove disc" when you are prompted, the disk may have only been removed from the configuration of the machine virtual but not deleted. You can open the browser data store and navigate to the folder of the virtual machine if you want to remove the disc manually.

Warning: There is no way to return. Deleted is deleted. So be very careful with that.

What is the reason for the complete data store? There may be snapshots on some virtual machines that could be consolidated rather than remove anything!

  • VMWare EsXi 5.1.0 disk space

    Hello

I have the following situation. A VM server EsXi 5.1.0 with two virtual machines.

A virtual machine has two virtual disks of type thick lazy disposition to zero.

The bootdrive is 1 hard disk drive HDD 2 data. From 1 to 80 GB hard drive put in service then the hard drive 2 has 120 GB put in service. I managed to increase the 80 GB with 10 GB drive because there was still space available in the data store so 2 months ago, I increased to 90 GB drive has worked perfectly.

In the operating system on drive C (disc 1) I had only 3 GB of free again so I need more space, so that the data drive (disc 2) had 30 GB of free space.

I thought when I decrease disk 2 with 10 GB and disk increase 1 with 10 GB of all be good. In the VSphere client, I edited the disksspace, but I noticed that I could not reduce the disk 2?

Also, I could not return my settings? So now on the virtual computer will not boot and I get error ' not enough space on the data store.

Can I return my settings and get the disc about the size of the 'old '?

    Thank you

    Jeffken

Reduce a virtual disk is unfortunately not supported in the GUI (and the CLI). In order to decrease the size, you can use VMware Converter for example.

Anyway, what you can do to be able to turn on the virtual computer as soon as possible - assuming that the host is not part of a cluster and you have not enough memory - is to put a reserve of memory for the virtual machine. The disk space required for the virtual machine swap file, which is created once the virtual machine is running - is equal to the amount of provisioned VM memory minus the reserved memory. So if you change this setting in order to reserve any memory, the paging file will not require any disk space.

Note that with very low available space on the data store, you can run into issues when you create snapshots!

  • ESXi 5 - increase the disk space

    Hello

    Info:

Size of the disk hard server: 4 TB

What are the limits on the increase in size of virtual machine disk space Windows Server? For example, if C: win2k8 is 80 GB, can I increase to say a maximum of 4000 GB (eg. only 1 VM on the host)?

I get a new server and I would like to give the VMs small readers and increase disk space needed in the future, if necessary. How will I know how much space the augmentable drive by?

If I start with young readers, does this mean that I won't be able to increase the disk space, as well as virtual machines with more readers?

    Thank you

Sorry, my bad. The size of the virtual disk does not depend on the HW version, it's just 5.5 ESXi and VMFS5.

In any case, some words of clarification:

    • You can create virtual disks with up to 16 TB, in c# Client
    • Large virtual disks > 2 TB-512Bytes (with up to 62 to 64 to no) are not officially supported in c# Client, even if this can work for drives <=16TB (see=""> vSphere 5.5 storage improvements part 1: 62 TB VMDK)
    • Note: You cannot manage VMs with HW version 10 in the c# Client.

  • ESXi 4.0 initial installation 208167 used 80G of hard disk space

    Hello

I'll put up an old HP Proliant DL360 G5 server with two hard drives, managed by the HP Smart Array P400i controller 146SAS.  With RAID 1 + 0, the LogicalDisk is about 136G.  After you have installed the server ESXi 4.0, vSphere client reported that 51G is available for virtual machines.   See attached snapshot.  Back in 2009, on a new DL360 G6 server, I used the same software to ESXi 4.0 and installing used only 2 GB of space.  Which could use the 80G of hard disk space?

I noticed a difference in how vSphere client reported the DTX200:

The DL360 G5, the customer reported the storage as "local disk VMWare..." »

The DL360 G6, the customer reported the storage as "Home HP series SCSI Disk... »

Any idea what happened to the 80G?  Thank you.

    -Jim

If I understand you correctly, there is nothing on the data store yet (i.e. no VMs)? In this case, you can try to remove the data store and recreate to see if it reports the correct size after that.

  • Disk space on ESXi

    Hey

    I'm doing something wrong?

I used to use VMware Server1, now I changed my ESXi. On WMWare Server1, it was possible to have a flexible space on my HD, which means that it took me 50GB on my HD, and if I don't use 20 GB, it will use (put) only 20 and not to keep all 50 GB in reserve...

Is there therefore no possiblilty to use on my flexible hard disk space as I could do with Server1?

  • I want to monitor the disk space and CPU on a windows - DONT see machine

I want to check the disk space and CPU on windows server 2003 box - DON'T see pltform for windows box all 'fileserver mount' or 'CPU '.  I do not see these services
for my UNIX/LINUX platforms. What controls what in health platform services, and WHY doesn't show the windows platform the platform services. I have Server 3.02
talk to the windows client running 3.02 box. I just reinstalled the client on windows
box and still the same. Nothing in the health platformservices). I restart the HQ server and its
client also. NOT knowing how to manage the windows box. I can go in manually and add an assembly file server service and name it and then this name appears in the services of the platform
health. I shouldn't this for CPU, NetworkServer or mount fileserver interface. ???  I talked to John Mark Walker and is well why this is happening?

I'm not an expert but I have encountered this problem also.  That's why I think it happened to me.

    1. I installed the server and checked it was running and I was able to connect to Headquarters.
    2. I installed my agent on another box and as soon as he said it started successfully killed him so that I could go ahead with the installation of the agent as a service.
    3. I installed the agent as a service and started it.
    4. this particular agent in central administration did not show one of the hard disks or WIN32.

I fixed it by deleting the agent and put it back.  After you start the agent for the first time and it communicates with the server let it run for a while before you kill to install as a service.

    1. stop the service of the agent on the windows machine
    2. open your command line, change to your agents directory and run hq-agent you to uninstall as service
3 remove the data of your agent directory folder
    4. use the download of SERVER installation to install your agent
    a. by running setup.bat - full (option 3 for the installation of the agent)
5 finish the installation of the agent so that your window says 'agent started successfully.
    6. DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW
    7. connect to your HQ and accept your inventory of auto-discovery, access this resource, and you should see that it is only partially completed
    8. Refresh every few minutes and you should see all the icons of availability to change green checks and your additional question as disks and CPU added.
    9. once filled close your agent, install it as a service, and then start it again.

I was killing my initial discovery officer before he could finish, looks like you have the same symptoms.

  • Need help to create a rule to monitor only Linux VMs on my virtual disk space production center

I am trying to create a rule that will follow my Linux VM disk space. I have three virtual centres Foglight and I'm having a hard time trying to understand how to implement the rule. I tried by name as, but I can't understand how to restrict to a certain VC. I have no common naming convention for machines virtual linux.

VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where (name like ' mq %, WFD, fam, fdb % % %, % of the MAS ")

    or

    VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where (name like ' / %'))

The first says the scope is valid but gives me nothing in the Rulette and no warning. The other gives me all virtual machines with their VM number but still not get all type of alerts.

For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Brian,

Thanks to a bouquet. I tried to get this to work for several days. I modified it to include only Linux as the example above always gave me some Windows file systems.

VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where (virtualMachine.virtualCenter.name like 'vCenter %' and virtualMachine.host.os.longName = "Linux (OperatingSystem)")

  • Dynamic hard disk space allocation

    Hello

Is it possible to ESXi to dynamically allocate disk space as virtual machine he needs. I'm under ESXi 5.1.

    Thank you very much

    Welcome to the community,

You can configure the virtual disks to the virtual machine as thin provisioned, which allocates additional space if necessary. However, remember that thin configured disks descended not automatically if the data in the guest operating system are deleted. Make sure monitor also that you the use of the data store if you are going to fund it, i.e. to provide more disk space for virtual machines that physically available.

  • Running out of disk space and the need to remove the old clichés

I recently joined a company owning an ESXi 4.1.0 (build 260247) server with 4 500GB data warehouses.  One of our servers main database (Ubuntu/Postgres), which uses only one of the data warehouses (4 datastore) has 21GB 465 GB free.  It is currently configured to store all settings, storage and snapshots on this unique data store.  The hard disk is configured as thin.

The virtual machine has crashed a few days ago, when it ran out of disk space.  We removed a small second partition (which was in the same data store) and cleared space, but we receive extremely weak with only 5% of the data left store.

I have read many posts and wanted to get the opinion of this community before I move forward.   Because we do not use the 4.1 last I heard some issues using the option "Remove all" that it may require more disk space and others recommended to manually delete snapshots from the closest to the base, but it seems that in this case it can merge the snapshot with the original without freeing all the space.

We are not all of the snapshots and I'm fine with delete them, but I assure you we will not run out of disk space in the process and complicate things further.

It is best to manually remove these snapshots starting with the one closest to the base or by using the "Delete All" (or something else)?  In addition, if we go with the manual option, is it possible with the virtual machine upward or do we need to close first?

    Welcome to the community,

After the screenshot, your virtual disk 'arrow_db1.vmdk' stocked thickness!

With the thick disc service and ESXi 4.1 (the problem with "Delete All" is related to version 4.0), you can run safely "Delete All". However, due to low disk space, I recommend that do you with the virtual machine off. If turned on, a new temporary snapshot will be created, which - according to the workload of the virtual machine - can grow and fill in the data store.

Due to the size of snapshot and depending on the speed of your storage space, you need to plan a few hours well downtime.
