decouple duplicate files

Somehow, I have the files located in different folders.  Want to get rid of one and keep the other, but when I remove one, the other is also deleted.  Tried to change the file name on one, but the other gets automatically changed too.   Tried to move them in the same folder, but I get a message source files and destination have the same name - well, Yes, I am trying to move a file, then of course, he will continue to have the same name, until I have rename.

(1) how can I separate these duplicate files so that you can manage and delete a copy while keeping the other?
(2) how these duplicate files have been generated?  It must have been a fluke, that I have not configured the this way intentionally.  Yet, I have a few dozen files like that.   This sometimes happens with images in my images, where the two photos are located side by side in the same folder.  Renaming or deleting a cause the same action on the other.   Without doubt, I do something wrong without realizing it.  I have no idea how, when or why the photo duplicate was created...  I need to know how to avoid this in the future.

  • How can I have two desktops on iCloud sync at the same time, without having duplicate files?

    Hi all

I have two computers, a MacBook Pro and iMac. I use the new feature for Sierra macOS, which allows me to continually synchronize my office on iCloud. I welcome the Office on my iMac be synchronized on the cloud. Now, I would have the exact same office on my MacBook Pro. I tried many ways, including by dragging files to iCloud Drive on my desktop, but the synchronization does not work. If I enable syncing on my MacBook Pro, I know that I have duplicate files.

With this method, I would like to: whenever I have add a file on my desktop iMac computer, it shows up on my MacBook Pro Office without the need for me to keep about iCloud road opening.

    Thanks for reading this.

    Ethan

If you enable sync on the MacBook Pro, it should not be duplicates.  What makes you think it?

  • Search for duplicate files

I ve seen scenarios "duplicate", before even a bunch of mac applications that helps you to find or get rid of duplicate files on the hard drive in order to save space. This isn't my case this time, however, and by the way, this isn't a weird-o case. I m sure that many of us find our selfs in a similar situation each time than in quite awhile.

    So please, keep on reading.

I have a (1) small unique file folder full of (hundreds) with no subfolder in there system and (2) one big lot of (in thousands) files, folders, subfolders, and files more... arranged in a complex scheme of directory.

Most of the files in the folder (1) have a copy in folder (2), and that's OK. In fact what I need is to make sure that all THE files in the folder (1) have an exact copy in folder 2 regardless of it s heritage.

I can go through the process of checking each file one by one and once again find its copy in folder (2), remove it in folder (1). In this way, I'll finish with a tiny bit back (1) with only a few files which´s copy could not located in the folder (2).

Is it possible to automate the process?, using automator maybe?, you know an app that can help me reach this goal?

    Thank you very much!

Conceptually, it's pretty simple - a small AppleScript, or maybe shell script and you're done.

As always with these questions, however, the devil is in the details. In this case, what constitutes - specifically - a match? are files with the same name considered a match? What happens if one is more recent/old plus grand/smaller than the other? they are still a match? that should keep? the most recent? the largest?

Once that specify you, the rest should be easy.

  • What to do with duplicate files?

Hello. I recently installed "Disk Clean Pro" and run "find duplicate files. Most of the records found have recognizable names and so I can easily decide if they should be "cleaned" or not. However, a lot of files is a string of alphanumeric 40 who have no sense. My question is: is it 'safe' clean up these files or are important and should be left as is? Thanks in advance for your help with this. See you soon. Adrian

If you don't know what a file is, so do not delete it. Badly designed finders only duplicate check a file name and possibly the size. But two files with the same name and size may have different content or can be in two different places for a reason. What you don't know can kill the operating system.

Hello filgrastin, I wouldn't allow any site online scan my system. Many of these sites offer this to try to gather information of your system or install the nasty code on your system. There may be legitimate sites with no malicious intent, but I'd be skeptical of the any of those sites. As has been said, nothing in life is free. There is always a catch.

You can perform a search for wild-card to duplicate on your system files, simply by using the generic specification * and then the type of file you are looking for. An example would be * win.jpg this would search for any file which had the letters win.jpg once they are, the duplicate files can be deleted. You should be very aware that there are a lot of duplicate on your system files, and they should be left there.

Only the duplicate files you have created could have one of the removed copies.

  • What is the easiest to remove the "double" (type programs not duplicate file finder)?

What is the easier, more realistic (programs type not duplicate file finder) to delete files 'duplicate '?

    Moved from Internet Explorer (unknown/other)

Original title: NOT a Finder double file

Well a double-file-finder is the only realistic way.

If you don't want to use software to make life easier for you, you could do it the hard way: drag - move all files in the same folder.  If both have the same name, the system will offer to combine by crushing with the other so alone is the surplus.

Of course, that counts only if the names are the same.  If you don't want to use software to facilitate your work, there will be a lot of work.

  • Identify and purge the duplicate files

I'm running out of storage space. When I look at My Documents & Settings it seems that there is a lot of duplicates and files. Is there a process to identify duplicate files and purge them in Window XP?

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/reviews/AllDup/AllDup.html

AllDup allows you to find the files duplicated on one or several folders or drives. You can choose to match files by size, date, attributes and content comparison byte by byte and also various settings to exclude certain file types or the search folders. AllDup then analyze selected records and produce a list of all files duplicate was found. The list is organized into groups, which makes it easy to manage results and process the files. You can manually select the files that you consider to be duplicates, or you can use the options of Intelligent selection that allows you to automatically select the files based on their date or folder. Duplicate files can be processed in different ways, you can choose to delete, move or copy them to a different folder or rename them in their current location. Other features include export search results, customized search profiles, a built-in file extract, ID3 tags support and more.

  • Help! A registry cleaner/duplicate file remover program deleted my file extensions!

Help, please! A solvent cleaner/duplicate file registry program removed nearly all my file extensions, and I can't open any files excet a .pdf file. Several weeks ago, I went online looking for ways to increase my memory on my Windows XP Professional. I had no business playing with this stuff. I'm not tech savy. For some reason, I thought I knew what I was doing. I downloaded several different free programs, which were supposed to increase the memory on my hard drive. I don't know what program was the culprit, but she deleted my file extensions. Is there a free program that fixes / replaces all the typical file extensions? Please, please advise.

Use system restore to return to a time before your error - this should restore the registry to its previous state and resolve the problem.
