Defragment disk

I want to defragment my drives, but I get the message "Disk Defragmenter was planned with the help of another program".  Before you change the schedule, you should remove the custom settings.  So I click on the 'Delete settings' button but nothing happens.

All of the right answers would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

First thing to try is to restart the computer and see if that makes a difference.

You have installed a different third-party Defragmenter, possibly in a composite utility, which has replaced the supplied System Disk Defragmenter.

Please provide a copy of your system information file. Type the system information in the search box above the Start button and press the ENTER key (alternative is select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, system information). Select file, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Not to place the cursor in the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new information file system each time system information is available. You must allow a minute or two before the file is completely filled before exporting a copy. Please download the file to your OneDrive, to share with everyone and post a link here. Normal mode preferred report. Please say if the report was obtained in safe mode. If the report is in one language other than English, please indicate the language.

My HP defrag disk utility runs every 20th of the month and never ends even after 2 days.  It is usually suspended around 20% defragmented. I have Windows 7.   Don't know how to solve.  Thank you.

    Hello

    You are welcome

Indeed, Windows 7 does a pretty good job to defragment your files automatically in the background, so there is no real need to start the process manually.

However, if you would like a separate defragmentation utility with a good user interface, the application free Auslogics is a good choice and can be downloaded from the following link.

    http://download.CNET.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10567503.HTML?part=DL-6267754&Subj=DL&tag...

NOTE:  When you first run this utility, make sure that only the C Partition on your hard drive is selected in this application - none of the other partitions should be defragmented.

  • Defraging disk does not work

whenever I have try to defragment my laptop restarts, I don't need to defrag because my system is slow

    Hello

It is very interesting question, but in my view the correct answer to your question, you should look on the Microsoft page because it is a typical problem of operating system. If I found a few explanations, I'll let you know.

Please check if the laptop restarts always in the same position (22%). In this case, it is possible that a sector on the HARD disk may be damaged or corrupted.

This means that Windows has detected that there are errors on your drive and will not Disk Defragmenter run until errors are fixed.

Click Start > run then type chkdsk /f in the box, click OK

A black command prompt window opens with the following message:

Type Y, and then restart the computer.

CHKDSK runs and try to correct any errors, which he founded.  If everything works correctly, you will be able to run Disk Defragmenter.  Depending on the size of your disk and the number of files, chkdsk may take a long time.  Let it run until the end.

Marking bad sectors on a hard disk takes time so be patient. Delimiting does not repair a defective sector. He places pointers to the reader by saying the system not to read or write to these areas that have been damaged.

If the number of defective sectors continued to increase after using the procedure above several times, then you should replace the disk. If an important system file is written to a bad sector, you can corrupt the registry hives and lose the entire contents of the disc.

However if have run chkdsk you not see more new bad sectors, then the reader can work for you for years.

    Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

  • Is it dangerous to frequent Defrag disk to the HARD drive?

    Hello

I was wondering if it is harmful to my HARD drive if I'm running defragmenting drive frequently, for example once in a week or a month. In fact, in my computer, I turned on the scheduled defragmentation, such as recommended by the operating system, but one of my friends told me that it could damage my HARD drive. Is it true or false just? Should if true, the frequency I perform the operation?
    Thank you.

It really comes down to how you use your computer.  But my personal recommendation would be to put all the months, then just ignore it.  With modern computers and modern filesystems like NTFS on Windows 7, the impact of the fragmentation of files is almost impossible to see an advantage.

In fact, Windows defrag will ignore pieces big file during defragmentation, because there's almost no benefit from their reorganization. Monthly calendar allows Windows to keep things tidy.

Defrag is harmful for one SSD hard drive (disk solid state drive) and Windows will not let you their defragmentation.  But for the other drives, the stress of the defragmentation is not much more than normal use and would not significantly affect the life of your hard drive (or on average about 5 years of life for most hard disks).

    Hi Alicia,.

We would like to know more detail from you to help you better.

    (1) have you tried to run the Disk Defragmenter using Task Scheduler?

    (2) was your computer when you had scheduled disk defragmentation?

If you use a specific program on a regular basis, you can use the Task Scheduler Wizard to create a task that opens the program for you automatically on the schedule you choose. For the task, automatic disk defragmentation to happen of the computer or the Scheduler to work must be powered on.

Write us with the details asked. We will be happy to help you come.

I bought this HP Pavilion P6755 (Windows 7 64-bit) about two months and it is a great machine to use.  However later I had on two occasions has experienced a blue screen, I thought I could used the pre-installed HP Support Assistant to try to improve the performance of the machine.  Then I started the update and he passed smoothly up to the part of Microsft Windows Disk defragment, where trotted as always...

I tried twice, the first run, I let it go for about 14 hours with no luck. the second time I let the process of development for more than 24 hours and when I came back to check it was still marching tune-up?

I closed this update to half way and started the window of defragmentation tool, and it took less than half an hour to complete the process without any problem at all.

So what is happening with this update under Hp Support Assistant?

I have ensured that the Windows 7 operating system has the latest updates, HP Support Assistant in its latest version.

Another thing so: HP ProBook I use at wwork completes the process of development without problem at all.

Anyone here has the same problem?

My PC has i5 and 1 TB hard drive; I used the HP Support Assistant to perform a check of the HARD drive and that you did not no problem either.

Thanks for any input or possible solution.

    Hello
    Welcome to the HP Forum!

I recommend that you update the HP Support Assistant. Go on the web portal of support for your office and in the software & Drivers section find the update, download and install it. I would have linked directly to the update for you, but you left the last alphanumeric (s) for your office product name identifier.

  • defraging disk c said its consolidation

that means consolidate and why he did it 2 times

That's the term for organizing files for each application as close as
possible later fragments have been removed to make it faster.

With the old XP deragementer there is a bar chart that gave a very good Visual
interpretation of the movement and consolidation of files. It would display fragments,
Red, removed and files in blue being grouped into large blocks instead of
many small blocks or lines, but Win7 likes to keep mysterious;).
It will be more than twice if you don't defrag often, or in some cases, such as after installing a game.
It is an improvement on the XP Defragmenter. If you want better consolidation
with XP, you had to run the defrag more than once.

  • I started to run Disk Defragmenter on my laptop with Windows Vista to 7:45 last night. She is still ongoing at 10:55 the next day. That is what it is? I can't believe that it takes more than 12 hours to defragment a hard drive.

    Vista
    Defragmenter

    Hi Augie,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    1. you run defrag disk for the first time?

Disk Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your hard drive and brings together fragmented files so that your computer can run more efficiently. We must keep in mind that the Disk Defragmenter uses disk access low priority and processor so that it is not influence your current running programs. This automatically translates a slower process. Disk defragmentation can take a long time if you run it for the first time and also depend on the space of hard disk and available data. If may take up to 15-16 hours, depending on the data and the bad clusters on the hard drive.

    Try the suggested methods.

    Method 1

If you want to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    Method 2

You can run a disk scan command to remove bad sectors on the hard drive, then run Disk Defragmenter.

    1. open the computer by clicking the Start button, click computer.

    2. right click on the hard drive you want to check, and then click Properties.

    3. click on the sur l' onglet tab Tools and then, under error-checking, click check now.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that detects the scanning, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report a problem, but not to fix them.

To perform a full disk check, select search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan is trying to find and repair physical errors on the hard drive itself, and it may take much longer to complete.

To check for errors file and the physical errors, select automatically fix file system errors and search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    4. click on Start.

Depending on the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, do not use your computer for any other tasks while it checks errors.

  • Unable to run any programs after you run disk defrag in Windows 7

I have a similar problem... after running the regular disk cleanup and defrag disk I can't open any program files.  I get the following messages: no such interface supported or just programs does not open.  When I go to the restoration of the system, the error message says System Restore does not start .

I have a Best Buy webroot antivirus protection.  I ran a scan of disk and all sectors are OK.  I'm trying to do a full restore of the computer of origin because of all the installed programs and this is the only option in safe mode.  I have a Sony Vaio - Windows 7.

Anyway is access to the rollback feature by bypassing the control panel?

    Thank you.

    Hello Colonel,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

Click here for an article on the removal of Webroot Antivirus. There is not a separate for Windows 7, so I follow that for Windows Vista.
You can download Windows Security Essentials for a free antivirus if necessary. Click to download Windows Security Essentials.
If this does not help, click here to contact Webroot for support.

    I hope this helps.

  • Disk defrag shadow active?

    Hey guys,.

While browsing a few docs, I read this - "never do a defrag disk in a virtual machine that has snapshots active" - now why is - this - because it will defragment the disk but just write that data in the snapshot of the file rather than to actually do it to block on the vmdk file level?

    Please comment

    R

Essentially, the concern is that the snapshot files can inflate very quickly and consume a lot of space.  If the partition is significantly fragmented, all these changes are written the snapshot file.  For example, you could end up with files of great snapshots as a period of heavy IO.  You will also have an I/O impact when you consolidate changes in the snapshot to the primary virtual disk file.
