Delete an ESX host in a cluster...

VMware dear Experts

Please help me I have a cluster (HA/DRS disabled) 2 esx host are members of the same, by mistake I haved added esx bad one in a cluster host. I want to remove the same. is there a way I can do the same thing without any downtime.

NEED URGENT HELP...

concerning

MrVMware.

Of course, you can do this without Maintenance Mode:

-Click right host--> disconnect

-Click right host--> delete

-Add the host to the cluster

  • Add production ESX hosts to a cluster

    Hi all

I did some research in the admin guides and community forums, and I'm sure that I know what to do, but I would really appreciate a test of consistency here because the manipulation I do is in a production environment:

I have a campus that contains two ESX areas that are managed by using vSphere and connected to a San. vMotion of works very well, the performance is very good (although the resources of the two boxes are fairly complete upward). However, I recently realized that I'd neglected to set up a cluster HA and DRS.  I want to remedy.

I created the cluster with these specs:

    • the two HA and DRS, enabled
    • to the left, she also fully automated.
    • the power management of left
    • monitoring and host admission control enabled
    • leave the default settings for the behavior of the virtual machine
    • monitoring VM disabled
    • EVC enabled
    • the storage value of the swap with the virtual machine file

I think that the next steps would be to add each ESX host consecutively and merged its resources with the cluster. However, here are a few questions:

    • How do you assess the risk factor to do this in a production environment (1 = perfectly safe, is a proven Scenario; 5 = you are out of your bloody mind? Do not)
    • Should I be triple-checking the SAN snapshots and planning of downtime for servers, or is it possible live and without any major qualms?
    • Am I right in assuming that it will increase my performance as well as provide better robustness of the campus, or should I expect a decrease in performance?

Thank you very much in advance for your advice!

    Hey red,

Addressing your particular situation, I would say yes to two questions.  Admission control HA is here to help you.  Ensure there are enough resources on the host computer to run the current and any expected load it will be after an HA event.  50% is close to default (but it is really based on the size of the slot) in an environment with two guests when guest cluster failures tolerates is set to 1 in a two and 25% host environment when the percentage of unused reserved as production capacity cluster resources in failover is left to its default value.

If you have several virtual machines running that allows you to book 50% of your cluster resources (which it sounds like you have), then you have the option of "first category" your virtual machines and their giving priorities to restart event HA.  For their level, you'll want to active DRS (can be set to manual Automation), resource pools and you will need to configure your virtual machine under your HA settings options.  You'll want to pay attention to the priority of restarting VM here.

I suggest you take a look at blog Duncan Epping http://www.yellow-bricks.com/ and Frank Denneman http://frankdenneman.nl/blog. They are all two fairly well the definitive answer to the HA and DRS questions and advice.

    See you soon,.

Note: Epping and Denneman explained that the amount reserved by default resources when you use the host cluster failures tolerates is promising to reserve enough resources to power on virtual machines.  This reserve of resource does not on average current, account, or future default load.  If you want to manipulate this feature, modify the memory and CPU reserves, which are the numbers used to calculate the size of the slot.

  • Be able to disconnect a data store without deleting an ESX host

I want to have the ability to disconnect a host from a data store without deleting everything in it.

Today what I understand, if I never connect a host ESX/ESXi in a shared - data store it will be there forever, even if no VMs is running on the host computer it seems not possible to simply 'disconnect' or 'remove' it. I found strange.

    I don't care

If ESX sees VMFS LUNS and LUN is right LUN ID (it is written in the signature) ESX automatically connects to this VMFS datastore.

LUN mask, detach the cable - just make inaccessible LUNS for this particular ESX.

  • Maximum cluster is eight ESX host?

I just built a demo in our test lab, and everyone thinks it's the best thing they've ever seen. So far so good. Now I need to move to the production very quickly, and I have a problem. In a few months, we head to a new data center. Due to the increase in the demand for virtual machines, we intend to build the new cluster VI 3.5 with new hosts. But all show them documents claims that the maximum cluster size is 8 guests. Why?

Normally, I would trust the documentation. But this just limit seems weird to me, so I ask: can I really have only eight ESX host in a cluster that is running the view? Is there a way to bypass this limit? I know that I can do everything simply multiple clusters, but I would really like to avoid this.

That is right. There is a limitation of 8 hosts per cluster due to a limitation of VMFS.

  • Maybe to lock a virtual computer to a host in a cluster?

    Hello!

We have a virtual machine that will require a special material (to test it). We step only HW in an ESX host in our cluster. Is it possible to lock the only VM in this specific host?

    Concerning

With vSphere 4.1 DRS host-affinity has been added (see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/VMW-Whats-New-vSphere41-HA.pdf), you can set a 'must' rule to ensure that the virtual machine only works on a specific host.

  • Script to retrieve logs ESX host

We have a situation where you have to pull up to some log files from each ESX host in a cluster to send...

log files such as esx.conf, and/proc/scsi/ql/ all zipped... for each individual hosts

is there a way that this can be done through the ttookit?

There are currently, as far as I know, no cmdlets in the VITK that allow you to access the local file system of the ESX COS.

But with the plink.exe and sudo command you can get something that comes close.

    $User =
    $Pswd =
    $Computer =
    $plink = "\plink.exe"
    $plinkoptions = " -v -batch -pw $Pswd"
    $cmd1 = 'sudo -u root cat /etc/vmware/esx.conf'

    $remoteCommand = '"' + $cmd1 + '"'
    $command = $plink + " " + $plinkoptions + " " + $User + "@" + $computer + " " + $remoteCommand

    $msg = Invoke-Expression -command $command
    $msg | Set-Content "C:\Temp\esx.conf"

In this script, see the esx.conf file and the output is captured and stored in a file on the local file system.

  • Virtual ESX host?

First of all I must appologise, I tried searching, but my browser gives me a 404 error whenever I press the search.  So if a topic of this nature already exists, please let me know.

    Now to the question.

I'm looking using Vizioncore vReplicator software, recommends that you have your disaster recovery ESX hosts in a separate group.  Ultimately, this means that your ESX hosts in this cluster will be doing nothing but waiting for a situation of DR.

Is it not possible to install ESX and then create 2 new virtual machines:

    (1) a production ESX host

    Host 2) A DR ESX

This way, just host would not be "wasted material" as production VM would BE able to help the production cluster workload, while DR VM would practically nothing (no pun intended hahah)... in a DR situation, the prod THAT VM would eventually not having any VMs to manage (because it would be likely that my just blown SAN) and DR site (with SAN backup) then resume the treatment.

Any thoughts?  Can I install VMware ESX as a virtual machine in ESX?

No you can not install ESX in the virtual machine under ESX, but you can under my computer - but ESX running in a virtual environment is not the way forward for DR performance would be catastrophic during a power outage in my humble OPINION

  • Cannot delete entry local old ESX host storage

    HY all!

We changed one of our esx hosts (say name = ESX - A1) with a more recent material, the server also called ESX - A1.

    These where the steps...

1.) former host in maintenance mode

2.) deleted from our cluster HA.

    former host stop 3.)

    4. change material)

5.) poweron new host with same name ESX - A1

Everithing was very good, except for one...

I still can't see the local storage of old ESX - A1 in the inventory of data store and the option 'delete' is unavailable (dimmed).

  • the upgrade from 4.1 to cluster 5.5 / 5 esx host.

We currently have 4 noise.running to host esx 4.1.0. (esx 1,2,3 (former host) and 4 (new purchase) and a server vcenter 4.1)

We bought another esx host 5.

I want to upgrade all hosts in the cluster with version 5.5, but I don't think that esx 1 and 2 meet the hardware requirements. This is why only 3/4 can be improved.

I think we can get budget to replace this year laster host 1 and host 2, next year.

What should be the best way to upgrade the cluster (you can buy another host this year and next year a plus).  Can I run 4.1 and 5.5 in the same group (I understand its not recommended).

    Thanks in advance.

Thank you, yeh, I check host 1/2 can support up to esxi 5 version.

  • HA/DRS and a Cluster of 10 ESX host

    Hello

I would appreciate comments on best practices for HA and DRS configuration on the following configuration:

    • We have a cluster of 10 ESX host

    • 2 guests are related ONLY to datastore1

    • 8 guests are related ONLY to datastore2

    • All hosts are available and active in Lab Manager 3.02

    • We use no fences of network

    The questions are:

    1. If one of the hosts in the 'group' of 8 guests above fails, HA will restart the virtual machines on the 7 remaining or it will try to start on one of the 2 hosts in the different 'group' (which have no connectivity to datastore2). Please note that I use the term "group" to highlight the hosts connected to separate data warehouses.

    2. can we or must activate us DRS about this group in a perspective of Lab Manager? Even if we have a maximum of 8 hosts connected on the same VMFS volume, are we exceeding any rule DRS here?

    Thank you

    gogogo5

My best guess is that most should all magically work.

DRS won't even try to break you, he will always recommend you only migrants who are indeed possible.

Yes, normally I too would advocate this split into two different groups, but with the problem, they do not need to be joined (you have configurations for which a VM MUST go on 2 and the rest MUST go to the 8, and indeed, LM will refuse to cross pools of resources to achieve).

If disable you completely the DRS, LabManager uses a variant of the old (pre - 3.0) algorithms to try to find the compatible host less loaded (at deploy time) and put it there.

I'm too uncertain and curious about the HA situation. I have a feeling would be deeply confused on a default installation, it could be implemented, but it would be difficult to make the right constraints.

  • Trying to acquire "tail" result on all of the Cluster Log Files of the ESX host

    Hello everyone!

I'm trying to design a script that I can use to point to ESX host groups and generate the last 10 lines of the log files specific on these systems by using Get-journal. First of all, I would like to point out that the following code works for a single individual host:

    $esx = get-VMHost - VMhost ""hostname"" " "

    $esxlog = Get-Log -key 'vmkernel' -VMHost $esx

    $esxlog. Entries & lt;

I had to leave out the expression that specifies the last ten lines of $esxlog. Entries b/c this editor kept interpret this section as html and present it as such

This will show the expected results, i.e. the last 10 lines of the newspaper on this host.

Now, when I try to expand this concept and try to create a loop on this basis by using the code below:

    $esx = Get-Cluster "NOMCLUSTER" | Get-VMHost

    foreach ($_ in $esx) {$esxlog = Get-Log -key 'vmkernel' -VMHost $_ }

    $esxlog. Entries} & lt;

once more the code specifying the last ten lines has been omitted here in order to avoid confusion

I only get the following error: a parameter corresponding parameter name "System.Object []" cannot be found.

What I am doing wrong with my script?

The variable $_ is a predefined variable so that you should not use it as your loop variable.

You could do it like this

    $esx = Get-Cluster | Get-VMHost
    $esx | %{
         $esxlog = Get-Log -Key "vmkernel" -VMHost $_
         $nrEntries = $esxlog.Entries.Count
         Write-Host $_.Name -foregroundcolor green
         $esxlog.Entries[http://($nrEntries-11)..($nrEntries-1)|http://($nrEntries-11)..($nrEntries-1)]
    }

  • If the ESX host in cluster lost the connection to the storage what will happen?

    Hello everyone

Could someone clarify if the HA agent monitors the availability of storage on an ESX host or is it only the availability of the network on the vSwitch COS?

    Thanx

working with your team of storage, they probably have the right tools to monitor and alert to such problems.

  • Automated Availability Manager (AAM) modified/deleted in ESX 4.0u2?

    Hello

We have just installed two new 4.0u2 ESX hosts.

When you add it to our cluster I tried to apply our standard host generated from a 4.0u1 host profile.

However, I received the following error message:

"It was not correct to specified parameters. changedValue.key ".

A closer examination reveals that failure against the host profile

    "ruleset found aam.

And you're absolutely right: if I go to the old hosts 'Configuration'-> 'Security profile'-> 'Properties', a rule named 'Automated Availability Manager' exists - and it is enabled.

On the hosts of the new however, the rule does not exist at all?

It has somehow been deleted in 4.0u2?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Move the host from one cluster to another?

I have two clusters and I need to move a host from one cluster to another. How can I do this and ask the host to connect to the new cluster instead of LUN LUN the host is connected to?

    Thank you!

to move the host, you can disconnect and then delete.  Once it is deleted, you can 'add host' in the new cluster.  If you have guests running, you should have your SAN team present the LUNS presented to the new cluster for your ESX host, from the other group.  Then, you can use sVMotion to migrate directly from your virtual machine to the new LUN.

Once it is completed has your team the 'old' not present SAN LUN and do a new analysis of your storage adapters.
