Virtual ESX host?

First of all I must appologise, I tried searching, but my browser gives me a 404 error whenever I press the search.  So if a topic of this nature already exists, please let me know.

Now to the question.

I'm looking using Vizioncore vReplicator software, recommends that you have your disaster recovery ESX hosts in a separate group.  Ultimately, this means that your ESX hosts in this cluster will be doing nothing but waiting for a situation of DR.

Is it not possible to install ESX and then create 2 new virtual machines:

(1) a production ESX host

Host 2) A DR ESX

This way, just host would not be "wasted material" as production VM would BE able to help the production cluster workload, while DR VM would practically nothing (no pun intended hahah)... in a DR situation, the prod THAT VM would eventually not having any VMs to manage (because it would be likely that my just blown SAN) and DR site (with SAN backup) then resume the treatment.

Any thoughts?  Can I install VMware ESX as a virtual machine in ESX?

No you can not install ESX in the virtual machine under ESX, but you can under my computer - but ESX running in a virtual environment is not the way forward for DR performance would be catastrophic during a power outage in my humble OPINION

VMHost and folder use the Get-VM-setting position. You must select either using the Where-Object cmdlet filter. For example:

    Get-VMHost $esx_hostname |
    Get-VM |
    Where-Object {$_.Folder.Name -eq $folder_name}

  • ESX host has a virtual machine that must be behind a physical firewall

We have several hosts of ESXi.  Some are standard ver3.5, while others are standard ver4.1.  All guests of stand alone.

A host ESX ver3.5 has 6 virtual computers assigned to the network port of the single on a vSwitch stand-alone virtual computer group.   This switch has 3 uplinks.

One of the virtual machines must place the physical while the rest remains in front of the firewall as well as the ESX host firewall.   I am told that this can be done by assigning one of of the uplinks to a subnet that is behind the firewall.  And this is the best way to manage it.   My question is: is it possible?   My experience limited with physical firewall and what knowledge I have of VI3, we would need to create a separate vSwitch to do this and assign the VM to these switches... and that's if the uplink can be assigned to a physical switch that connects to another switch behind the firewall (I think).

Something doesn't seem quite in here... I'm not sure it will work.

Sounds good to me. If it is a separate physical switch to connect, then you will need an additional vSwitch. If it's just a separate VLAN you could - depending on your current configuration (VST) - just create a new port with the appropriate VLAN ID configured Group.

  • Get the list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and dumping of .csv in a specific format

I have problems to find a way to get a list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and then he dumped to a .csv in the following format

    I use the get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm

but everyhting else after, it is where I am lost...  I think the closest I had been posting the output with a goofy header and format 'vm1, vm2, vm3 "...

    name of the machine 3

You must use the Select-Object cmdlet to specify more precisely the properties you want.

The Export-Csv doesn't know how to manage the virtual computer object.

    Something like that

    Get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm | Select name. Export Csv.\report.csv - NoTypeInformation - UseCulture

With vSphere 4.1, you have host affinity.

  • HO to import a virtual machine in esx host

    Hi all,

I have a cluster of small esx (2host clustered in a datacenter) manged by a machine virtual vcenter. Now, I installed an esx on a small host outside the cluster, do some test activities that must be totally separate from my cluster of production.

Before you perform the test esx host, I created some virtual machines in the production cluster. Now I want to import into my test esx host without have to reinstall them. Can I do this? the only way to achieve that I thought is to add my existing test in my data center host, leaving outside the cluster. then move my vms and remove it then, to manage alone.

Is this possible without any risk to my cluster of production? is there any other solutions?

    Thank you very much

    Paolo

Yes, but you cannot connect a free version, you need a license.

To not change your existing cluster, simply add the host in the data center (so it's outside the cluster).

When you are finished, just disconnect and remove the unused host.

It's only disable it every time that you enable VMware HA.

  • Open a virtual machine in a san on 2 different esx hosts

Hi, I have a Vsphere essentials, 2 Esx hosts and an Iscsi san, I need to connect the virtual machine in the two esx hosts (I know I don't have FT and HA), in order to launch the virtual machine never the first Esx and if first host, does not have the virtual machine on the second esx.

I tryied to connect the virtual machine to the second host, but the Vsphere client tell me that's not possible, because the virtual machine is already present at the first ESX.

There is a way to establish this setting?

For some it may depend on your application, if you can run multiple instances of the same application? If it is a web application? It stores its data in files on the server, or it stores it in a database locally? or remote database?

-VM on a local storage of the army, would not really recommended if you need so that it starts the VMS on host b quickly.

-If the two hosts have access to permits it storage even say and what the application can really be run only once.  He could only save it to HostA and if it fails at some point that it will be released the lock, have it on the virtual machine and you will be able to manually register the virtual machine to host b and start the virtual machine.  However, you will not be able to really get ahead.

-HA out of here, as if a host or power failure shuts on HostA, HostB will feed into the virtual machine down automatically

-FT - here in the spectrum creates a VM ghost on the secondary host in levels (what happends on HostA happens on host b)

-Another option to the other end of things has implemented Microsoft MSCS Clustering with iSCSI support I think.  You can run VMS with iSCSI to your San and clustered like this application.  Just note that with iscsi client it uses some CPU to create iscsi packets.

-Web Cluster, Cluster database.    It doesn't matter if one of the nodes of web servers or the database nodes go down really that the user will be redirected to another node in the cluster so really no need for HA/FT.

Of course, with some of the here above are expenses and pro / con of and there's a few ways to increase availability.

  • vCenter is virtual server - how to upgrade ESX host?

Our vCenter server is a virtual server.  I've been thinking how to run update manager on the host ESX, vCenter is sitting on.   The only thing I can think of is to use the VMware Converter stand alone app and move the vCenter server to another ESX host and then start vCenter / Manager Update on the new ESX host to update the original ESX host.

    Is there an easier way?

you have a shared storage?  If so, go to the host computer running the vCenter VM on, turned off, make a note of the data store that it is, remove the inventory, go to another host, browse the data store, find the vmx file, right-click "add to the inventory.

.. .or you can use VMware Converter to move the VM vCenter.  Another way would be to turn off the VM vCenter and do the upgrade using the CLI interface.

  • ESX as a virtual machine on an ESX host

Currently, I am installing ESX as a virtual machine on an ESX host. I have a couple of hosts potentially put this VM: two 4.0 in the course of execution, one running 4.1. I would like to run this VM on the host running 4.1, and the virtual machine must run 4.0. Thanks to my documentation and research of compatibility, I found that it is not supported as an operating system to run in a virtual machine under ESX ESX, but it's for the workstation and fusion. I read on some blogs that ESX install as a virtual machine on an ESX host is possible (at least on older versions), but comes with a few problems, which have no workaround. I found (external) positions regarding do all this with the 4.0, but my preference would be to do with 4.1 on the host and 4.0 on the virtual computer. I can't find something to do with 4.1, which is not surprising given that the upgrade became available less than two weeks ago. Does anyone tried it yet? Is there anything, you have found or recommend as I approach to do this? (I read that the virtual computer must be configured as a computer virtual running RHEL 5 with 2 GB of RAM http://when all this is done with version 4.0, but I was not able to find much more.) Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

    Hello

Yes, I tried last week and it worked for me. You are on the right track, we must select RHEL 5 64-bit as OS and assign the 2 GB of ram, and in addition to sound, you will need to use E1000 NICs for the installation to complete.

FYI, this configuration is not taken in charge/tested/certified by VMware.

    Hope this information helps

  • List of virtual machines on an ESX host

Is there a method in the sdk that lists all the virtual machines on an esx host?

Simply get a reference to a HostSystem and it has an array property called vm http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.HostSystem.html that gives you a reference to a matrix to all virtual machines on this particular host.

Here is a sample Perl script that shows how to retrieve all the virtual machines for a specific host and certain attributes of the VM: getAllVMGuestHostname.pl

  • How to add a new virtual machine to the ESX host using the existing files?

I need to implement a function clone without the use of cloneVM_task. I copied (a special copy) a set existing VM Directory Active Directory to a new directory and renamed copied all files prefix name of the new direcotry.  What task VM (reconfigVM_task, createVM_task or registerVM_task) command can I use to add that the new copied VM on the ESX host? I need to manually update the .vmx for new UUID file and other parameters?

    Thanks for any help.

I think that as long as you have updated all the names to reflect the new clone you must be fine and on the first step, you will be prompted with a question.

    Hello

If you have ssh enabled for root on two PCs, you can use the command.

CD in the data store where the virtual machine resides, then use

    SCP - r REQUIRED_VM_DIRECTORY_NAME root@IP_OF_DESTINATION: / vmfs/volumes/NAME_OF_DATASTORE /.

    There are ways to do the same by the valid Linux user as well, but it requires a few steps more {this is used when the root is disabled for SSH}
