Dell XPS One 2710, dead

My new computer worked fine last night and this morning would not start.  Technical support sends a flashdrive to re - install the operating system that will wipe the data.  In theory I'm fully backed up with a service online, but in practice, restore the files to a backup computer turns out to be difficult.

(1) it would not be possible for me to remove the dead XPS hard drive, put it in a box external (I have a practice) and then access my backup computer files?  That would make me return in the faster action.

(2) just in case where someone can help with the XPS error, the symptoms are the following: when I start it, I get a message 'auto repair preparation', and then later a blue screen saying "your PC came across a problem and must restart...". ». Exactly what is on this screen is a little hard to say because it is only visible for half a second or more, but I'm sure I've seen a reference to SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION any.  In any case, blue screen, it goes back to "Automatic repair of preparation" and then repeats.  I have a restoration/rescue USB drive that I made when I got the PC.  When I boot on the USB, it seems good to begin with (message "Loading" files..) but then I get the same error as message when booting from the hard drive.   The diagnostics run without error.

So last night I tried to re - install the USB DELL prepared key and it did not work.  I called technical support, but this time the person didn't know what was wrong, or at least what measures were needed to fix it.

The solution was to fiddle around with the BIOS settings to an option press Ctl - I introduced early start to display the configuration of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology technology. From there, turn off the power for help using the SSD as a cache device; then reboot (this worked, but soon); Then go to the Control Panel, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology technology; clear the contents of the SSD; reactivate the acceleration; reset; Update video drivers; reset; system fixed.   I just watched as the technician of most of the steps after starting using the remote control of the computer, so may have left the steps.

He said the following, even if I assume that these are intuitions rather than certainty:

(1) the problem was triggered by installing a Windows Update (maybe even just an update Windows Defender) and continue working without having to restart.   Of course, this may leave the seriously damaged SSD cache.  To avoid this problem, restart after each update even if the Windows Update system does not insist on it.

(2) the fix described above is likely to result in the loss of all data on the disk.  By thus to the stadium where he works but slow (if it gets that far), all important data should be saved.  In my case, nothing has been lost, with the exception of a week's time.

I would like that this has been fixed on the first call of support it would have saved me a lot of grief.  However, it may be that Dell only very recently found what was going on.

    I want to do a new install of the operating system with a new SSD, I intend to buy my 3 years old Dell XPS One 2710. It is my understanding that the Windows operating system authorization key is integrated into the motherboard. I think it is in the BIOS from what I've read.

    Throw the DVD in the trash if its for Windows 8.0 which is end of life. A DVD can be refused by SecureBoot. Also the Windows 8.0 installation and then allowing Windows Update for Windows 8.1 will lead to catastrophic performance.

    Its really simple to do theres just a bunch of information about the editions at the beginning... which often get confused. It seems that you are sure that your edition 8.1 Windows (Home) is however. Take a look at the associated tutorial video too:

    This video tutorial is more direct because it focused only on Windows 8.x OEM with a UEFI BIOS licenses that apply to your system. It omits all details on retail licenses and hardware legacy. Note the .isos used in the tutorial video are Windows 8.1 with Update 2 and not Windows 8.1 with update 1 as shown.

  • Windows 7 x 64 installation DVD does not start on a Dell XPS One 2710

    I apologize in advance for the long post...

    Just got a Dell XPS One 2710.  Lot has happened, but let me clarify the current number as briefly as possible: the machine does not start from the HARD internal disk or the Windows 7 Installer x 64 DVD.  He gets through loading files and then gray progress bar when its colorful animation it blue screens with error CACHE_MANAGER.

    I ran the diagnostic, including tests extended memory tests, and they have not found any error in what either.

    When I was troubleshooting this problem previously, in some sort the motherboard got bricks (I don't know what exactly I did to cause that), but Dell has since replaced.  The first motherboard had BIOS version A09.  It has installed A11.

    I can't find any BIOS settings combination that will allow even the Installer Windows DVD to start with the Blue error screen CACHE_MANAGER.  I tried the UEFI boot modes and legacy, I tried RAID and AHCI.  I tried with and without loading legacy OPROMs.

    What I ultimately do is set the start mode of RAID so that I can use the SSD mSATA as a cache ("Accelerate" in the Intel RST Panel).  But I can not even the installer to start on where I can load drivers RST (assuming it's even necessary).

    Other posts have suggested problems with memory, but I took each of the two DIMMS one at a time and I always had the same problem.

    Should I suspect the hard drive?  When we arrived at the machine, he seemed to be running Windows 8 very well - until we went on the way to the side dark and downgraded to Windows 7.  Then once we started to have errors on updates, things has quickly degenerated from there.  In addition, again, diagnoses don't find any problems.

    Any suggestions on how to get at least this puppy to start?   .. .or what have we done wrong?

    Thanks EJN.  It turns out that there is certainly a hardware problem on this machine.  It was a refurbished Dell making machine and apparently when they renovated the it, they missed the real problem.

    The way I know that it is material, it's that we bought actually 2 of them at the same time.  When I started to suspect the material, I decided to try this process on the other.  He worked like a knife through hot butter.  But I will say that the combination of the BIOS set to boot legacy mode and still start the installation with the option to UEFI DVD in the start menu was not easy to understand at first.  But when I followed the correct steps, everything worked very well.

    For those of you who might try this, here are a few things I learned along the way:

    1. According to EJN, take the time to get/burn a CD to install Windows 7 x 64 that already has SP1 on it.  If you go to preserve the UEFI partitions and the boot hard disk, you must have x 64.  x 86 (32-bit) does not support UEFI.

    2 unzip the RAID drivers to the * root * your USB flash or floppy drive and have it in the machine when you start the installation DVD.  I could be wrong, but it seemed to me that the installer looked for them without having to explicitly say it loads the me.

    3. as said EJN, set your BIOS boot legacy mode but use F12 at startup to bring up the Windows Boot Manager and start the installation in UEFI boot mode DVD.  If you want to implement an SSD as cache for your hard disk, you will need to set the SATA controller in RAID mode.

    4. I had partitions UEFI and was able to leave them intact.  Here's a very brief explanation: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744301%28v=ws.10%29.aspx your results may vary.

    5 take this one as a possible suggestion that is worth what you pay for it: when I got the USB with RAID drivers at the root before starting the installation DVD, I didn't need to load the drivers explicitly.  As I said, it seems that the installation program has been smart enough to find and load what it takes, but honestly, I don't know.  When I load them explicitly, I got errors saying that the installer could not install on the partition, I had chosen.  Makes me think that I could have loaded both times.  What worked for me was NOT explicitly their cargo.

    6. you MUST be at your PC when Setup has completed copy and unpack the installation files.  Don't forget that you have your BIOS set to start legacy mode.  So when he tries to restart to complete the installation, it will try to start using the table inherited from on your hard disk - who is not here because you did a UEFI installation with partitions for UEFI.  So when Setup restarts the first time, you might as well get into the BIOS here and choose the UEFI boot mode.  If you do not, you will need to grab it whenever it restarts using F12 and manually tell it to boot from your hard drive using the UEFI.

    These steps, you should get installed and running.  But another thing I had to understand that when first, I installed and executed the dashboad Intel RST, there is no acceleration option even if my mSATA SSD was found healthy.  I found that if it is formatted and partitioned, you actually go into Disk Manager and delete the partition before the RST dashboard he sees as available for use as a cache.

    I hope this helps others out of me.  It's a heck of a lot easier when the hardware is not bad!

    Call the Dell sales department or use the Dell sales chat and ask if it is possible. In some of my orders that I couldn't include additional is by phone or chat.

  • Dell XPS One 2710 does not start - should I all reasonable options?

    A few weeks ago, my 18 - month, Dell XPS One 2710 has started to act up.  Still not start correctly.

    Ran the Dell diagnostics on their Web site.  Everything was fine - no detected hardware problem.

    Yesterday, the computer completely stopped working.  It would be start, after a sweep of drive long, finally on the desktop, but can hang after 10 minutes.  I'm on Windows 8 (not 8.1).

    Today, I thought I would do a system restore to a point a month ago.   But today I can not get a startup complete, impossible to get on the desktop.  Therefore, can't do a system restore.  Instead, I see this screen.

    I have the options to continue?   I don't have a recovery disk.

    You can install 8.1 on top of what you have by a 16 GB or more usb flash drive as a bootable recovery media.

    If it does not recognize the key to your Bios, you can use a generic key for install but not activate.

    All the pre installed 8.x are 64-bit so make sure you download the correct version.

  • RAM Dell XPS one 2710 question does not start with more than 2GB of ram

    Hi, I recently updated to Win10 I've taught it will be easier way for installation after upgrade fees, but the reset button does not work so I decided to return to 8.1. I copied version UEFI victory to USB and restarted the victory while pressing F2, but the computer does not restart "just black screen even no Dell logo" so I turned it off, back on and same story. Then I disassembled the pc and know that no matter what combination I do the computer not start until there are just 2 GB or less ram in slot I have 1 x 4 GB 3x2GB and 2x1GB any variation as possible, you can imagine I tried close up with the same result. If there is more than 2 GB of system ram won't start. No idea where is the problem? for 2 years this computer worked perfectly.

    PS: Does anyone know how to reflash the BIOS I have spin A12 which is the most recent, but I want to just make sure that the BIOS is not messed up. DELL utility allows not only update reflash. Does anyone know how to force the upgrade of BIOS?

    So I found the problem, it's a BIOS. I tried to reset it in PIN on MB and it did not help removed battery no change I found that the BIOS utility can be forced thru cmd. So I did and the finishing of the bios update successful she even seems scary cos for any computer freezes. but that came on and after several early I can again use all the RAM slot with what ram size I want.

    How to force the update of the BIOS...
    Open cmd as administrator
    and run the exe with command extra /forceit in my case "A12.exe /forceit".
    Voila BIOSupdate is running

    Simple but time fly. hope it helps someone too.

  • DELL XPS ONE 27 - no HDMI is not detected with a xbox 360. Help!

    I have my Xbox360 connected to a desktop computer all in one Dell XPS One 27 "with an HDMI cable and when i change the input from Computer to HDMI the monitor does not recognize the Xbox360 and get a screen black and a sign saying "No video on HDMI input detected".
    
    The issue is that my monitor has a resolution of 2560x1440 and I think the maximum resolution that gives Xbox360 is Full HD (1980x1020). But I read that the Xbox360 still have to re-scale the image until it is appropriate (ergo, leave black edges to complete the remaining pixels or, failing enlarge reducing the quality of it), right?.
    
    Anyway, I have also tried to change the resolution of my computer and neither detects Full HD HDMI (and I'm not sure that the Computer resolution remains once I make the switch to HDMI, but in principle, yes).
    
    
    
    That's it. I have asked in shops and specialists and everyone tells me that it is possible, but I do not see where it may be bad or failure.....

    To resolve this problem, you will need to check that the HDMI cable is ENTIRELY in the HDMI PLUG! Believe it or not! The HDMI on the back of the OIA 2710 is a tight fit, and I thought I was going to break the taking, but he won entirely, and the xbox was on the screen.

    My XPS One 2710 has worked great for over a year. This week, it began to falter on exactly half of the screen on the right side. The Twinkle is quite violent and makes this unusable side. I have updated all drivers and made diagnoses who have shown no failures. My BIOS is A09. I think that it is suitable for a machine running Windows 7. Any ideas?

    Thanks for posting.  A friend asked me to take a look at its XPS 2710, and it was indeed the problem.  The symptoms were exactly as described in the previous posts.  I took off the lid in plastic and metal and blew out an industrial fan at the rear of the machine to test.  The machine is stable for two hours, which was much longer while it lasted usually.  Satisfied with my tests, I got creative with my Dremel:

    Using a model of fan 140mm, a spare R2 from fractal, a 140mm fan Grill and fan 3 pin USB converter I cut a hole in the lid plastic and mounted equipment (the Converter 3 pin is necessary because playing with the CPU and GPU fan headers will cause the BIOS to start a fan speed error).  Then I reassembled the entire thing without the metal under protection.  Three hours of DURATION and no problem.  Before spazzing would begin after about 20 minutes.  $30 in parts to repair a $2,000 machine.  Not bad.  Thank you once again, everybody who posted!

    When you install the DELL XPS One 27 clean you MUST have the INTEL RAPIDSTORAGE driver on memoryStick.

    Use Windows 8 disc and start with F12 Commandbutton installation (Start menu)!

    Following the installation and use manuallinstallation option!

    Now that you see a clear list of the hard drives-> it's failure, but I have the solution!

    You can see the "Load driver" button on the left Push it!

    Now you can load your memoryStick with the unzipped driver of intel (x 64) rapidstorage!

    The installation routine find now a driver for XPS-> install

    After the installation of the driver-> all hard drives are displayed in the list.

    Yes, I went on the Dell site, but they were not useful.  After some extensive research, I found that the basic system 2 devices focused on the rich built in card reader and was able to solve the problem.

    Hello. I received a disk with my 2710 XPS that says it's OS "Already installed on your computer" Dell - W8 64 bit recovery media...

    On the flap of the paper for adults is what I thought to be the license key to reinstall the win8. However, when I popped this disc in another computer win7 and booted from it, I offered to install win8 and asked to enter key which is 5 x 5 digits. But key printed on the envelope of the disc isn't this format at all - it xx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxx format, only the third section has five entries.

    Now the area where you meant to enter the key, he said do not enter the dashes between the sections, that they will be registered automatically... and the results is that it divides my 'key' in different places, that what is printed on the disc for Adults (envelope) and anyway I have not 5 x 5 is 25 digits to enter. What gives?

    I'm worried that if my Dell XPS 2710 must be reinstalled fresh win8, I would be stuck with that. And a related question, am I allowed to a PC only, or more than one? I guess it comes to OEM disc and I hear OEM disks allow more than one PC to be installed and activated, good or bad? How will I know?

    I looked in the settings of win8 and in computer properties I can see product ID and check if windows is activated (on) I see that the last five letters of the key. I note that I am not the first owner of the computer and I don't know if there wasn't a tag attached with the key. In any case, I don't see any this label.

    Product key of Windows 8 for your XPS 2710 system previously injected on the motherboard. So, while the reinstallation of Windows 8 on this system, you will not be prompted to enter a product key. Windows automatically identifies the product key on the motherboard.

    If you want to install Windows 8 on another computer, you will need to buy a different product key for it. If you have two Dell systems with the same version of operating system installed, then an OEM disc will work on both computers.

  • All new Dell XPS - hard drive dead - why? What to do next?

    My laptop is only a few months old. Here are the plug and the summary of what past:

    • Windows Vista Home Premium
    • Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT hard, 320 GB capacity, a new computer laptop Dell XPS M1530, Serial ATA Hard Drive, Interface SATA 5400 RPM
    • Black screen saying no bootable devices, the BIOS doesn't detect HD, no rattling or other noise.
    • Need JPEG and PSD files recovered.
    • It took in a few places, they said he had no visible external damage, but the BIOS would not detect HD.

    Hours before the accident/death:
    I went to my husband's office. I was using an ethernet network connection. The computer company made some changes to their network to prevent me from access to the files of the company and only have access to the internet only.

    Who could do something on my computer? I surfed on the internet for a few hours after making these changes to the network. Then I went home, started again and got the black screen with the error message "no bootable device. The BIOS does not detect my HD.

    Any ideas why this happened on a new computer/laptop HD?

    Do you know of any service data recovery 'white room', which have a fixed rate lower than $ 900?

  • XPS One 2710 - black screen on startup. No BIOS.

    I met a problem when using Windows (during a copy of files, icons disappear from my office and I cannot start programs) and had to restart my PC. As a result, Windows could not restart showed a blue screen WDF_Violation, another boot resulted in a screen of reconstruction followed a mistake of the Intel driver Cache. After repeated that cycle a couple of teams, I hard rebooted the PC.

    Now, the computer starts with a black screen. I see the backlight turns on for a few seconds however there is no screen of the BIOS boot nor is it the beep normal when the pre-start checks complete.

    I tried to boot with a CD of Windows 10 and USB without success. I also tried pressing the full range of function keys.

    He is running Windows 10 and was without a problem for about 6 months so far.

    My data is backed up, so I don't mind a format and regenerate solution but must be able to obtain the BIOS and boot from the DVD/USB.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Dell didn't test the compatibility of the XPS with Win 10 2710. If you search these forums, you will find many users reporting the same 'black screen of death"after Win 10 on this model for a few days, weeks or even months.

    Not quite clear what happens bad, but many users had to replace the motherboard, if they could find one.

  • XPS One 2710 - Touch screen DOES not work

    My touch screen is not available on my 2710.  It worked fine for a very long time.

    Calibration is not available... System-> about said "no pen or touch input is available for this view."

    I noticed after I upgraded to Windows 10.   (but this is not necessarily the exact time fell out, I don't use it much)

    Then I downgraded back to 8.   Isn't there.   Figured I might as well go back to Windows 10.

    I did other things within the same rough period.   BIOS upgrade to A12.   Modified by some drivers, etc...

    I tried drivers, controlled at the touch of a cable on the motherboard... but did not have a single not forwards.

    Would love to hear some suggestions or ideas.

    My 2710 XPS with touch monitor WORKS.  I did have a problem at all, even at the Vernissage of builds. I think that the missing element is the Dell OSD Application, which can be downloaded here: link

    I did a clean install of Windows 10, do not know if it matters.  Also, I went and installed all the drivers from Dell as well. I recommend to enter your service tag to get the specific drivers for your configuration.  Select Windows 8.1 in the menu drop-down.

    Since the 2720 is supported by Dell, I also installed some drivers select here.  I don't remember the those who precisely.
