Delta missing VMDK

Turning on a virtual machine, I get the following error...

File [V5-LUN-MOV01] servername/servername - 000001.vmdk was not found.

Here are the details of the machine virtual file is attached.

Please help me solve this problem.

Thanks and greetings

Pramod Upadhyay

It seems that something has gone wrong during a backup at 03:00, 20 June, but unfortunately the file log does not show exactly what happened. It comes to show that the snapshot could not be deleted due to a missing file and them the VM has stopped working.

The possible options are either open a support with the backup provider call, or manually change the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file and replace the virtual disk, i.e. replace:

scsi0:0. FileName = ' / vmfs/volumes/52378378-bd8fee3a-174d-0025b51100af/IRVLBLLFT03/IRVLBLLFT03-000001.vmdk '.

with

scsi0:0. FileName = "IRVLBLLFT03.vmdk".

"and possibly delete the" "" IRVLBLLFT03 - ctk.vmdk ".

If you do this from the command-line of the ESXi host, follow http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1026043 to recharge the virtual computer after changing the .vmx file.

Since the virtual machine was stopped just after this issue, you can not lose data if manually restore you the basic disk, but I can't promise you anything.

  • What are the "delta of vmdk. REDO_ * "files?

I am train to track down the orphaned machinery and excess files on our busy SAN storage.

I used the ESXFan script to generate a list of orphaned VMDK files, but he came back from a lot of files in the following format:

    [Volxx] MachineName/MachineName.vmdk-delta.REDO_06yY3F

Where the last 6 characters change for each file.

Some of the machines for which these files are present, are turned off. Most of them might hard disks are not persistent, so I guess it could be some sort of disk-delta, which, in the case of machines that have been turned off, was left on the SAN.

Is it safe to delete these files (at least for machines that are powered off)?

We delete REDO files through the VirtualCenter GUI when necessary (VC 2.0.1 ESX 3.0.1) and it will prevent the deletion of a file that is currently in use. We have not had problems to remove unused files. I would test it somewhere off-production first, but their removal should not be a problem.

  • Restore VMDK

    Hello

My problem is that I have a virtual machine. I did a snapshot.

In the data store that contains this virtual machine:

    VM.vmdk

    VM - flat hard

    VM-delta - 00001.vmdk

    VM - Snapshot1.vmsn

    (and other newspapers, vmx etc..)

The problem is that there was some VM - 00001.vmdk, that was VM disk but it has been deleted. My question is: how to recover the VM - 00001.vmdk?

    Help, please.

  • Can't see VMDK copied to new/different DATASTORE - HELP!

I tried and I tried and I tried. I found a lot of info, but not the answer I need. I don't know if I spent the next two days to research, I eventually would. So I ask forgiveness in advance if you have seen and answered present a million times before.

    REASON:

I had an ESXI server with a data store consisting of 2 RAID 5s, consisting of a total of 6x3TB readers give me about 10 TB of space. Well, it was full. So I decided to back up all computers virtual and VMDK (in many ways, wait, it's coming) and recreate a RAID5 with all disk drives and recover 3 TB of storage. Fact. Appeared / s smart, I didn't have to buy new disks to 4 or 5 to replace them all and saved me at least $1, 000.Yeah me.

    BACKUP APPLICATION:

I have five virtual machines running all the time, four servers, and an admin station. On the main file server, I removed non-essential readers/VMDK and started to copy them down to a NAS to spare for temporary storage. I used the VSphere Client, browsed the data store, took the VMDK files and saved off the coast. All cool with me based on the experience that I have lived this before editing the text VMDK file to rename files in the past. (Yes, I know. Easier to SSH inside and do it from the command line.) Dealing with so much data, backup and restore is literally took weeks (only on the rate of transfer of 14 Mbps at BEST and 7-8 MB/s norm.) My actual VMs and essential data I backed up with VEEAM. After everything has been saved, I recreated the new RAID and got my additional free storage. (Yes team!)

    RESTORE THE ŒUVRE IMPLEMENTATION:

I used VEEAM to restore all my virtual machines. It worked perfectly. It's a great program. (The main file with 3.5 TB of essential data server took 90 + hours to restore!) All virtual machines are up and works fine with my essential data. Now, we start running on the problem. I used VSphere Client to browse the data store, made a new folder named READERS and started to transfer some of my VMDK removed previously stored on my NAS. I went to add some players transferred back into my VM and, SURPRISE file server! ESXi does not see them. They show by browsing the data store, but they do not have the opportunity to add to the inventory and do not lie when this database is read again. FAILED! Try to understand the things I looked at the text VMDK files and to know the difference. I was hoping that it was just a database signature/ID that needed to be updated in the current data store and everything will be edited and fixed quickly. No dice. By comparing the information, I could see the differences but had no idea of what they should be. So I created a new drive in an existing VM with the same dimensions and settings and look at all the different information in each file, and I don't see a logical solution to the problem in this way.

Yes, I know now that I should have used a programme of SCP to copy the files. From my experience, what I did would work, but obviously my experience is limited and it did not work for this situation. I read the items similar to my situation to use the stand-alone converter, but that does not work as it is looking for a virtual machine (and thus a VMX file) convert a machine instead of by car.

So I throw my problem to the masses more experienced than me. How can I do to re-use of my 'old' downloaded disk VMDK files in my new data store?

    INFO:

    ESXi 6.0U1

old version of h/s disc 4

new version of h/w discs 11

down and 6.5 TB 3.5 to to go about 8 discs.

    Bill

Based on http://buildvirtual.net/recreating-a-missing-vmdk-descriptor-file/, I just delete all descriptor VMDK files and recreate them using the vmkfstools. Size is just there in front of me, no problem. WHAT format of disc supported, I used, is a shoot shit. What was my mentality create these drives five years ago? Thin provisioned? Zerothick? Eagerzerothick? It turns out I did the zeroedthick all.

So I have four hard drives, back up and functional. A fifth could be corrupt or linked to a cliché that I never knew exist and could possibly be effed. I am re-uploading now to know for sure. Three more need to be uploaded to the server and go through the process. Things are good! I am MUCH less stressed.

The process to fix my problem ended up being this:

    • Download FILE - flat hard old files.
    • SSH server, go to the path where the files FILE - flat hard.
    • RM all the files in the FILE - flat hard to represented - flat hard.
    • ls-l see the sizes of the files represented - flat hard file
    • Use mkfstools to create new files (i.e. vmkfstools - c 137438953472 - d FILE.vmdk zeroedthick)
    • RM the new FILE - flat hard
    • MV represented - flat hard to FILE - flat hard
    • Add HDD in VSphere Client on the appropriate virtual machine.
    • Rinse and repeat.
    • Down a scotch

    Thanks to all who helped.

I hope that this will be displayed in the search for the next fool who goes through this pain.

  • Help recovering files flat.vmdk supplied thickness necessary!

    Hi all

First of all, some background on my current configuration (and I'll try to keep it short and sweet)...

I have 3 1 than to hard disks in a 5.x ESXi host I use in a RAID5 array.  The RAID is actually implemented and managed by a guest Windows Server 2008R2 VM on the host.  When I created data warehouses to build the table, I've formatted each of hard drives and added inside the vSphere Client as VMFS data stores.  When I added the readers to the configuration of the VM of comments, I put them to be supplied thick lazy-reset and all 3 have the same size (930.2899996 GB).  Each disc has an and a single VMDK and this VMDK takes up most of the usable usable VMFS partition sectors.  Inside of the guest, the virtual disks were formatted using Windows Disk Manager like dynamic GPT disks without starting and then adjust upward in a RAID5 array.

    What has happened...

A week or if there is during a backup/cleaning of the virtual machine, I accidentally deleted a 2nd guest VM which has also consulted with data warehouses (I was testing Windows Server 2012R2, impressed) without separate configuration of the 2nd VM first, data warehouses and eventually remove the VMDK files from the disk.  I am recovering files flat.vmdk at least 2 of these discs.  As this happened, I spent many hours of research online about VMDK recovery and disk running scans trying to find the missing VMDK (again unsuccessfully). Nothing has been written to one of these discs, and the VMFS partition is still in-tact.

    I know...

Geometry of the disk, the file names, logical sector size and number of sectors files missing VMDK (recovered in the log file of the last successful start-up of the VM)

Using the above information, I have a model created for a descriptor ready replacement VMDK file as soon as I can retrieve images flat.vmdk

    What I've tried so far...

ESXi Shell & vmfs-fuse-> Navigation data storages show volumes are empty.  VMFS-fuse mounts the volume, but no VMDK file cannot be found.

UFS Explorer-> same basic idea.  VMFS partitions are found easily and show good healthcare, but I can't find the files there, either.

Hexagonal view using of UFS Explorer, I autorévisés several areas that I know are within the area of data and verified the parity RAID5 withdraws (to be confirmed), it seems that the data is always there and in-tact.

DiskInternals VMFS Recovery-> attempt to analyze the disk, after 36 hours of scanning on a single disc had not yet reached 10%.

    What I would like to...

Find the starting location for the file flat.vmdk for each disc and do an image binary dump of this position to the end of the VMDK file (sector of end computed by the starting location + number of sectors for the VMDK's newspaper).  Since all 3 discs are identical in the sense of VMWare, this place of departure should be the same for all 3 disks.  I have an external HD to 3 TB in waiting for the dump once I know not where to start.

Worth I feel is actually locate the start position in hexadecimal view (I do not know what hexadecimal values, I need to look for).  Sanbarrow (continuum) of the site (VMDK-basics), he said he's looking for the mbr as header of the file, but I've not found in my records.

Last note 1: this isn't a company or business system.  This is my personal home server and I have legitimate licenses for all the OS running on the host computer.

Grade 2: Yes, I * have a backup, but it is around the age of 2 months and lack about 300 GB of files that have been added since the last backup.  Can I recover a good part of the missing data (about 60 GB) back to the source and copying/download files, but there are still about 240 GB that I can't copy (source no longer exists).  My fault for not having more recent backups, but worse is still not a TOTAL loss (about 85 percent recovered from backup & original sources).  All disks in the guest system VMDK is stored on a separate DSS and have experienced good backups of the primary system on a separate disk drives).

Any assistance with this would be much appreciated!

    Thank you

    Brian

    Ok...

So, after several weeks and countless hours my best, I finally decided to give up and call it closes unexpectedly.  Finally, I reformatted the hard drive and rebuilt the RAID from scratch - it is just the initial synchronization now and I will fully bring my last backup to the table at this stage ends.  The most important things I have known and confirmed backups of already, but I'll never recover the archival footage that I had done previous laptops, but at least it's not a TOTAL loss.  I've not spent by them in a long time, so I doubt that something very important, but there are still some bugs the stew out of me.

What bothers me more, however, is the lack of response at all here.  I read on previous posts on the subject, describes the situation in detail as well as what I need help with, and after 3 weeks and 60 views... nothing.  I thought that VMware would have an active, reactive and useful community much more than that and I must say that I am very disappointed.  I hope that all those who might find themselves in this situation is able to get the help they need.

    I hope everyone has a great 2014!

  • SRM and VMDK files on separate LUNS

Generally, all General all virtual machines requiring SRM are on a pair of LUN (i.e. all content VM). In the case of DR all LUNS are toggled together so that the entire virtual machine is in static mode for recovery.

However, we have a new requirement for a certain virtual machines that have a certain number of VMDK files, even if the virtual machines are SRM, they all have a single VMDK on separate LUNS which are not necessary for the failover. The question I have is if in the case of DR VM works on another site without the missing VMDK file? and the virtual machine becomes corrupted if all files are not present?

I did some tests in my environment. This works.

I have a VM that resides on the data store ' *-SRM02 '. I added the second vmdk residing on non-replicated data store "LabManager02".

Now when I try to protect this virtual machine with MRS, I get an error:

A virtual machine has one or more devices that do not have file on Lun being replicated backings.

and the Wizard "To configure Protection" opens.

On the "Storage devices" screen, you can see that the second vmdk has a yellow warning mark:

When you press the "Detach" button, the unreplicated vmdk turns to "Not attached":

I ran the resumption of the trial, and he succeeded.

Once, make sure data residing on the partitions that you want to detach is not needed for the server and applications to run normally.

    Michael.

  • VM different files after download

    Hello

Today I was downloading vm esx 5.5 Server files to USB HDD connected to my dekstop and after that comparison files vmdk to orginal form datastore browser with a single USB form I found big differences in their sizes:

    (1) vmdk file was 91 GB size (provided 153) - now his 0.53 KB

    00001.VMDK 2) on the data store - 21 GB size (153 provided) - copy - 336ko

    snapshot1.vmsn 3)-12 GB, copy - 12 GB

but in addition it generated files:

    0000001 delta.vmdk - 21 GB

    Flat hard-146 (153 GB)

The process was long but not corrupt, and I don't have any errors
Can someone explain it to me please? I'll be able to rebuild the virtual machine from these files?

    Thank you

That's ok. Each virtual disk on an ESXi host consists of two files hard. A file descriptor and a file of data (flat or delta). The data browser store however, shows two files into one file, using the name of the header file and the size of the data file.

So in your case, you have a virtual disk of base consisting of:

    hard + -flat. VMDK

and a virtual disk snapshot (delta):

    -000001.vmdk + -000001-delta. VMDK

In case you want to attach the virtual disk to a virtual machine, make sure that you reference the file descriptor of the snapshot!

    Thank you!

You are right about the CID/parentCID, these values must be unique. However, according to the log files and the size of the hard files the current order of the snapshot is: 4-> 1-> 3-> 2-> base. I created the file descriptor suitable for (see you attachment). You just need to rename/edit them and replace the "xxxxxx" with real names. Be sure to only use a (not Notepad) editor that is able to edit UNIX files such as line breaks!

Once you have downloaded the file descriptor, you should be able to create a clone using the:

    vmkfstools-i w2k3_xxxxxx - 000004.vmdk w2k3_xxxxxx_clone.vmdk

BTW, the .vmsn and the files... - ctk.vmdk can be deleted.

  • Virtul machine import problem

    Hello

I had a problem when importing the VM to ESX Server.please help me for this problem of sorting.

I downloaded these files to ESX server and move to another Esx server in different place

    Files of virtual machines

    (1) USSSTAPP125A.nvram 8.48 KB

    USSSTAPP125A 2). VMSD zero bytes

    USSSTAPP125A 3). VMX 3.05 KB

    USSSTAPP125A 4). VMXF 267 bytes

    (5) USSSTAPP125A_1 flat. 20 GB VMDK

    USSSTAPP125A_2.VMDK 6) 407 bytes

    (7) USSSTAPP125A_2 flat. 40 GB VMDK

    (8) USSSTAPP125A - flat 10 gb hard

I want to import the file, my total size of the virtual machine is 40 GB Ony, but I had total 70 GB in the virtual machine folder, please give sugesstion to import the virtual machine in ESX server

Please explain the VMDK types, when used, delta flat, VMDK, (Snapshot)

You just need to take care of the VM disks while trying to move from one ESX to another. for example to download files as below

    (5) USSSTAPP125A_1 flat. 20 GB VMDK

    USSSTAPP125A_2.VMDK 6) 407 bytes

    (7) USSSTAPP125A_2 flat. 40 GB VMDK

    (8) USSSTAPP125A - flat 10 gb hard

here - flat.vmdk is your disk real file while USSSTAPP125A_2.VMDK is known as a "disk descriptor" that points to the real disk file

After downloading these files, import the same to another ESX Server data store. Then create a virtual computer by selecting the custom option.

When creating the virtual machine (via mode custom), he will ask for the selection of drive hard--> the existing hard drive option and point to the files on disc you have downloaded in the data store.

Note:-If there is a specific configuration defined in your .vmx of the VM (virtual machine Configuration file), then you can take backup this as well.

  • VCB Snapshots

Someone can easily explain to me the process of snapshot for a full image via VCB backup? I'm a little confused on the explanation there.

VCB uses VMware Tools to suspend the system of files inside the virtual machine.

A point in image time to the virtual machine is created in a file called delta?

Any changes made to the virtual disk during the snapshot are in this delta file?

When the snapshot is removed, the ESX host consolidates changes made to the Delta for the vmdk file?

    Thank you

In a full image backup a snapshot is created which in turn creates a vmdk of delta that is running on the client.  While the guest is running on this delta file that the originial vmdk is copied to a location specified in the configuration of your VCB, once this process has been completed the snapshot is deleted and therefore stolen some content of the delta originally vmdk.

  • Invisible instant unremovable

We run ESX 3.5.0 and use VCB for making backups. Yesterday VCB failed to delete the snapshot. It happened a few times before, and I removed it manually as usual. But this time the VCB snapshot got replaced with a snapshot of the 'Consolidation of assistance' instead.

We got a snapshot that was difficult to remove before, so I knew that if I created another cliché, then chose 'delete everything' I have Snapshot Manager, it must remove all snapshots. If at the end of the day I stop the server, created another cliché and then delete all the snapshots. All snapshots have disappeared since the Snapshot Manager and I went home.

Today the server was "suspended" by VMware, since all the disk space on the LUN has been filled by snapshot redo/delta/vmdk files. I had to move another disk of servers of the LUN to get back again. If the snapshot has not been removed after all. There are now several delta/redo/vmdk files on the LUN, but no snapshot Snapshot Manager in the GUI.

How can I remove this snapshot?

Of course, this looks like a complex.

I would avoid any risk, since it is a production server.

I recommend using VMware Converter to clone this virtual machine on a new computer. The conversion of all snapshots get consolidated.

  • Get a delta.vmdk to retrieve data

    Hi all

I'm looking for a way to recover data on a delta.vmdk file I have. Basically what happened last week, it's a virtual machine has whipped out and I had to restore some files I had saved manually. I had all the shots or delta.vmdk files, but I was able to restore the data on the file - flat.vmdk. I finished due to lack of 20gigs of data, but I have the delta.vmdk file (20 GB) that I want to retrieve data from. I also have the most recent snapshot file manually before the disaster. What I read, there is a way to create a new virtual machine, the Assembly of the delta.vmdk (20 GB) as a new hard drive and then just manually copy files and folders off the power. How can I accomplish this?

    Thank you!!

Well it seems that you are missing two snapshots of the chain. However, I have prepared the attached template for the snapshot file because it is missing (at least you haven't added it in the zip file).

Add the file descriptor to the file of the virtual machine, and then create a clone of the disc

The command to clone the drive is like:

    vmkfstools-i /vmfs/volumes/old_datastore/vmdir/vm-00003.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/new_datastore/recover/vm-clone.vmdk

BTW: Have you tried different things with the VM already? The virtual machine refers to a ' ps - delta.vmdk "as the file to HARD drive?
