Determine the unused space in the virtual hard drives

I will determine the unused space in my virtual hard drives.  I want to:

  • Select a virtual machine
  • the first vmdk disk is always the OS disk in this environment.  How much space was put in service, and how much is actually used?

  • The other disks are data application.  What is the total space on these non-OS disks, and how much of this space is actually used?

Thank you!

You then get the results when you run this adapted version?

  • Restore the virtual hard drive backup on a different node with different IP and host name.

    Hi guys,.
I want to do the following.

My reliable backup strategy is the virtual hard drive backup. The database is installed on a virtual particulay machine (node). Now, I do not take the backup of the DBF files or control files or files from archive.
I rely on the virtual hard disk backup. It takes the entire Virtual Machine backup. Now, I wanted to restore this virtual hard drive backup to a different node with different IP and host name.
But before I start the database, there are some things I need to do.
As change address IP address and the hostname registered with the database installed and its services.

Please guide me through the steps on how to perform the activity.

I think that the whole operating system will be restored in a new virtual machine... I have it... The changes will have to be done in the file listener.ora (hostname or IPADDRESS and also PORT NO in case you want another port as the existing one). Once you have made the changes that you have to bounce the listener, I mean stop and start the listener... I don't think that any other changes are needed... Make sure that the same need for entries (from the listener) to be included in the TNSNAMES file. ORA file both client-side... The tns service is used to connect to the remote database server (from the demand side or whatever source you used to connect to the database server)... I just think that the change to do... Hope its clear... Please try...

  • Defragment the virtual hard drive in vSphere 4 hypervisor

    Hey guys

I noticed the hard drives on my VM were fragmented badly in the operating system and the virtual hard disk from VM.

I defragmented the hard drives in the Server 2008 window, but I can't find how to defragment the virtual hard disk from VM. I thought that you could power off the virtual machine, change the settings of the virtual machine and choose defragment the hard drive of the virtual computer. However, I can't find this option.

Is it possible to defragment a VM hard drive in vSphere Hypervisor 4? If yes how are you?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Removing the virtual HARD drive / Datastore

    Hello

Noob from VMware, which has inherited a system of perconfigured here-

    System = vCenter Server 4.0

I have a datasotre that is down and which contains a couple of virtual hard disks associated with virtual windows servers. Are not readers of operating system on servers, but they are readers previously configured windows backup (backup of the Server 2008 and 2003).

"Therefore, the servers went offline and when I try to start the server I get a message saying"virtual disk"drive hard n is not accessible on the host:

Because virtual servers are powered off can I just remove the drive through the settings or Windows OS to complain that a disk is missing and if yes is there a way round this?

The data store was a store NFS running on an old box of linux which is dead completely and can not be recovered, if I need too know how tell - associate this store from the servers.

    Thakns to help you

    Kipster

    Hello

    Hello from the Canada

Yes, you can simply delete the virtual hard disk to the Virtual Machine through 'change settings '.

Then turn on your VM again

Once you have your data store to save and launched, you can add it back into your virtual machine.

    Concerning

  • The virtual hard disk size

For worker Analyzer IO VM, it is recommended to create a larger second virtual hard disk that serves as a target IOmeter.

Is the size of the virtual hard drive exactly the same workload working set size, which means that all data in the virtual disk is read from or written to storage during the race?

Do you have other recommendations to decide what size the second virtual hard disk should be a VM worker?

    Thank you

    Rebecca

Hi RS_1, it's useful, but I was looking for some additional tips for the user guide.

I received responses from some of the developers of IO parser and also ran a few tests of my own.

Iometer generates its I/O based on the number of blocks of target disc (i.e. the manually added virtual hard disk on the worker VM).  The size of the disk hard virtual will be be equivalent to e/s working set size.

For a virtual hard drive that strikes only cache, a rule would be its size to 100 MB.

For a virtual hard drive that hits the disk, the virtual hard disk could be sized anywhere from 10 GB to the top. The drive, / o most actually hits disc rather than cache.

To do this, I created a 200 GB thin provisioned virtual hard disk for my e/s VM Analyzer worker. As I ran the Iometer workload, I could see the thin disc quickly increase from almost nothing to its size fully provisioned. This means that the new virtual hard disk sectors were continually being read and written by Iometer. Interestingly, it only took about 5 minutes to flesh out a whole 200 GB drive. Obviously, this speed would depend on the type of I/O profile used.

I also tested a 20 GB disk Iometer vs virtual a virtual drive of 200 GB. Average latency, IOPS / s and flow were all better for 20 GB disk - because a greater proportion of e/s in this case was hit the cache, tilt the numbers positively.

So, even at the drive hard virtual, sizes last 10 GB, size of the VHD will affect yet observed performance to Iometer.

  • Is there a way to increase the size of the virtual hard disk? in the VM? ESXI 4.1

    HelloW to all.

I created VM with the size of the hard drive of 80 GB and now I want to increase the size of the 80 GB to 150 GB drive does not add whit extra 70 GB partition but to increase the patitionn of 80 GB.

Is there a way to increase the size of 150 GB of the virtual hard disk? in the VM? ESXI 4.1

    Thanks in advance.

If the guest operating system is windows, then follow below process-

Scenario-1 his drive is not the boot partition.

    1. click on the settings of the virtual machine

    2. Select the hard drive to increase and give the size you want (don't forget that you should have a free space available on the data store).

    3. go to disk to the virtual machine management, and then rescan disk (you will see the unused space)

    4. open the cmd/command prompt, then run diskpart by using the diskpart command

5 then... the drive... After this list give the command "select disk 1" (1 is the disk you want to expand)

    6. After selecting the disk, type extend (extend order will extend the drive)

    7. exit diskpart.

Scenario-2 If the drive is the boot partition.

    1. power of the virtual machine. (go on change settings of ==> click on the drive you want to extend ==> copy the path of the disc)

    2. go to any other test VM and add disk--> disk existing use ==> give the drive path that you want to extend ==> Assistant to finish.

    3. Select the hard drive to increase and give the size you want (don't forget that you should have a free space available on the data store).

    4. select disk of the virtual machine management, and then rescan disk (you will see the unused space)

    5. open / cmd command prompt, then run diskpart by using the diskpart command

    6. then... the drive... After this list give the command "select disk 1" (1 is the disk you want to expand)

    7. After selecting the disk, type extend (extend order will extend the drive)

    8 exit diskpart.

    9. go to change the setting of this test VM and select the hard drive... ==> click on remove virtual machine. (do not drive delete)

  • Fusion is stopped because the virtual hard disk capacity is reached

I run Windows XP Pro in a virtual machine with the German Fusion 3.1.1 on my MacBook 13 "with Mac OS X 10.6.2.

When I try to start Windows the VM said: "VMware Fusion has the virtual machine is stopped, because the capacity of the hard drive (40 GB) is almost reached."

But this Windows disk management in the first partition 'Win XP Pro' 15 GB to 30 GB are free. And on the second partition 'Install' 8 GB to 10 GB are free.

I took the snapshot on the virtual machine and have managed hard disk cleanup. But it does not help. Fusion said I do free 1.2 MB capacity of the virtual hard disk. How can I do this, when the merger does not start?

The opportunity to make more the virtual hard disk of 40 GB to 50 or 60 GB is blocked, I first have to delete the snapshot. But the snapshot is deleted.

What can I make Fusion work again?

    czer27 wrote:

I doubt that what you quoted is the message itself, so it would be more useful if you attach the .log files.  See information for VMware Fusion to help with that.  Howevere...

I bet that the message is more like "VMware Fusion has suspended this virtual machine because the disk on which the virtual machine is stored is almost full. To continue, free at least MB of disk space. "and as such, you must do exactly what means the message and that is free space hard disk Macintosh not space inside the VHD.  After all, it's the Mackintosh HD stored on the Virtual Machine, isn't?

  • Reduce the size of the virtual hard disk

Are there any known issues with the reduction of the size of a virtual hard drive, I have a machine that has been installed with plenty of disk space, but space is not needed now, so I was going to reduce the size in the settings. Any questions?

So I guess you want to reduce the nominal size of the virtual disk. The VMware Converter Standalone user to achieve this. You choose your comments as the source machine and create a new clone of him while reducing the size of the hard.

I want to save the file in my iCloud account, but free space in the hard drive of my MACBOOK

There is no practical way to do it.

If you do not enable iCloud Drive on your Mac, you can upload files to iCloud by car via the web interface at https://www.icloud.com

But you can access the files from the web interface and won't icloud drive as drive in the Finder.  You cannot use the Finder to access the files. You need to download it to use.

After Vista update cannot find the external hard drive, AutoPlay does not work, and new unusable disk appears under my computer. Also I can't 'manage' my computer because I do not have "permissions". I tried a fix he 45071 and it did nothing.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) (including free evaluation versions are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.) If NIS has been installed for 3 years, you have NIS update at least once and maybe twice (e.g., NIS 2009 > NIS 2010 > NIS 2011).

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) viaControl Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate (Norton) until you get a prompt "no update more".

A virtual hard disk does not actually create a partition on the hard drive

Hi all. I am new and on a free trial right now.

How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

    Monthly payment included cloud storage?

Peut I manage backups? And how?

    -Amir

    Hi amireos,

Yes, you can create your workflow where you can keep all your images on the external hard drive and the Lightroom catalog file as well.

If you start with Lightroom and then use the Destination location as external hard drive when you import your image of the external source such as a camera or SD.

If you already have your Images on the Mac HD drive, then play all your Image on the external hard drive first and then import images directly from there.

Finally, you can change the location of the Lightroom Catalog as well.

Default location: folder on the Mac Drive HD, there is folder called Lightroom that you can move on the external drive too (however catalog Lightroom can't memory space as its only import previews of the images is not the real image and full)

Once you move the file catalog Lightroom external hard disk, then you need to browse the catalog file when you launch Lightroom only once.

See thread: LR catalog moving on external hard drive

Let us know if it helps.

    Kind regards

  • CHKDSK on the volume of virtual hard drive - how do we do this

    Hi Forum,

I get an error message indicating that the virtual hard disk volume is corrupt. How is a chkdsk ran on this volume?

I did a chkdsk on the local drives and it shows no errors. I am suspecting that if the system state backup, it creates a VHD file damaged. Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome. I have this product on multiple servers and have not been able to find how to do about this probably.

  • Read the last sector of the virtual hard disk

    Hello

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium VM inside VMWare Workstation image. I want to access the last sector of this Virtual Hard Drive. However, I do not within Windows 7 itself.

Instead, I want to start this virtual system using a bootable Livecd. To this end, I can create an ISO using the Windows XP Installation CD and Bart PE Builder.

Now my question is, how do I boot under VmWare Workstation Livecd Bootable using Bart PE created so that I can access the virtual hard disk.

And also, once I started the new system, I want to read this last sector of the virtual hard disk. This is for testing purposes. I know, it could be done on a running system as well however, I want to be able to do this in VmWare Workstation.

I searched the net for a solution. I came across the Disk Explorer utility, which is available here:

    www.Runtime.org/DiskExplorer.htm

In my view, this will allow me to read the last sector and thus copy. It is however an expensive software. They have even a plugin developed to work with BartPE, which is available online here:

    http://www.Runtime.org/diskexplorer_for_ntfs.cab

But we need to provide the license key in the .inf for this file to work.

In any case, I know how to prepare the Windows Bootable Live CD using BartPE.

    Issues related to the:

How to get started in using a windows live CD VMWare?

How to access the virtual hard disk of the Windows 7 operating system?

And finally, are there other alternatives that are easier to explore this disk that would allow me to read the last sector of this virtual hard disk and copy another medium?

    Thank you.

I am able to use the keyboard in knoppix, but the mouse doesn't seem to work properly. I am able to click right on the desktop but not able to select any option. The behavior of the mice is completely wrong.

Is it possible to fix it?

You can try to temporarily adjust the Type of guest OS Linux or edit the .vmx to have these parameters/values or temporarily remove the USB controller.

    usb:0.deviceType = "mouse"
    usb:0.present = "FALSE"
    mouse.vusb.enable = "FALSE"
