  Hello. I have a mac work computer that I use mainly as I am at work all day. I have a free Lightroom CC and toggled access from terrible iPhoto (Photos now) and now I want to be able to use it at home on my laptop too. I consolidated my photos in a lightroom catalog on an external hard drive that I would like to be able to access it from my computer at home as well - just in case I leave my job one day. Problem is, I don't have Lightroom at home so I need to get a copy and do not know how to proceed. I don't want to pay for CC every month. Is there a way to get a desktop only version and use it? Help, please. Thank you!

  Hi Mitchell,

  You can install applications of CC and activate on two computers, just follow the same process you used to set up your laptop and log in with your Adobe ID

  Note that installing and running that LR on your desktop doesn't automatically give you access to the photos on your laptop. If your intention is to share your catalog, reply back - this is a more advanced topic, but I can give you some advice if necessary.

  I have Lightroom cc mu of office work. My laptop at home is running 5 Lightroom. Even if I have a subscription to CC, the laptop is old and a 32-bit system, so I can't upgrade the software. Can I use the same master catalog on an EHD between computers?

  LR5 and LR 6/cc using two different formats for the catalogues. Thus LR5 and LR6 cannot share them.

  If you have two computers running the same version of LR, EHD would be a great way to share the catalog and images between the two.

  Yes, you can install lightroom 5 on Windows and MAC, both (computer upto 2 on same or different MAC and Windows) with the same serial number but be sure that you have a machine at the same time to use Lightroom 5.

  Lightroom syncing between two computers is not Possible.

  You may however share the catalog by keeping it in an external hard drive. See the Catalogue LR Sync between 2 computers but not master files

  I use a desktop pc and laptop (both with windows 7 and LR 5.6). I decided that the best way to work between the two was to use a disk 2 TB with all my photos and my LR catalog on that external drive. Have the catalog on the drive makes sense to me because the process to keep catalogs up-to-date on both computers seems somewhat discouraging and leaves plenty of room for operator error.

  I was looking for in my import operations and 'intelligent Preview' seemed to be an interesting effort for me because there might be a time when my external drive could be left at home or inconvenient to access and I would like to have the ability to work on my photos in offline mode. However, my understanding of the smart insights is that they need to be on a local catalog on the computer. If I try to run LR without my external HDD attached it wants me to locate or choose a different catalog, which is an obvious problem, if I don't have it with me.

  My question is, is it possible to use smart insights into the way that I am currently using LR? and if not, how do I remove the smart clips that I have already created?

  If your images and the catalog and associated files are all on the external hard drive, then you have found smart. Smart insights are nice, if you want to take a subset of size reduced with you on your laptop and you do not have the available originals. The problem with intelligent insights, is that you can not turn to Photoshop or other external editors if necessary. This work was smart insights could in some cases limit what you'd be able to do.

  Yes.  If you go regularly to several machines, the simplest solution is to put the catalog on the external hard drive file, just open this same catalog on both machines.  The alternative is to use the import of the catalog when you return to your main computer to copy holiday photo settings in your main catalog.

  It is a catalog that you created on your computer, or coming from another computer?

  If it is one that has been created on your computer, you can search your computer to see if you have two different versions of Lightroom installed. If so, then you want to open the new version of Lightroom by double-clicking its icon, and then you should be able to open the catalog.
