disk management errors and lost partitions

I have reimagee a older laptop that has a 500 GB drive. In the process, I have partitioned the hard drive in three volumes: a drive T: and V: each with 100 GB and C: got balance. A day or two later, I noticed T: and V: mysteriously disappeared. Fortunately, I didn't put anything in them again, there was no loss of data. However, it seems that I have lost access to disk space. Disk management show up with this:

All traces of T: and V: disappeared. The c: volume 226GB poster (including 148GB is free)... which is all what I think after I had partitioned the disk. But then underneath, the entry to disk 0 C: Watch is affected 465 GB... it is unclear where the balance of 35 GB went. If I try to reduce the volume, it presents me with the total available size 476938MB and shrink space 151834 MB. If I try to further reduce 1 MB, it fails with the error "Virtual Disk Manager: the parameter is incorrect."

Now that I'm in this State, is it possible to recover without start from scratch?

    Hello Seymour777,

There is good and bad news for this.

The good news is that there is a way to do it.

The bad news is usually the disc at the level of the publishing industry.

Your best option right now is to look for a data recovery specialist or watch data recovery programs that will do the job for you.

  • Satellite Pro U400 VISTA disk management has 6 primary partitions

    Hi all!

I have a strange effect on my Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro U400 (but it seems not to be specific to this one that I saw the same symptoms elsewhere, at the same time):

I had the laptop with a 320 GB drive with recovery-(invisible / "Configuration EISA", 1,46 Go) system (C:, ~ 150 GB) and data (E:, ~ 150 GB) volumes. It's the usual structure of Toshiba,

    pre-installed OS was Vista professional.

As I plan to install Linux in addition, I have done as a result of preparations:

    Recovery disc Vista created 1.).
2.) C: shrunk to ~ 100 GB using Vista disk management tool.
3.) E: shrunk to Go ~ 98 using Vista disk management tool.
It is suggested that 4.) E: directly behind C: using Parted Magic CD.

Finally I got a 97 GB of free space at the end of the disc, and everything worked well away. Creating an additional on the free area, Vista disk management, resulted in an extended partition created by Vista. This extended partition contained the extra volume as well as the free space remaining behind.

To prepare for installing Linux, I've finally created three logical Volumes inside the extended partition with Vista disk management tool.
After that, I had the following structure of the partition on the disk (indicated by the Vista Disk Manager):

    invisible 1.46 GB, primary
C:, ~ 100 GB NTFS, primary, active, System
    E:, ~ 98 GB NTFS, primary, data

~ 97 GB extended partition, containing:
2 GB unformatted (planned for Linux swap)
20 GB unformatted (planned for Linux root "/")
21 GB unformatted (planned for Linux "/ home")
    Empty remaining 54 GB space

    More on Vista worked properly!

Recently, I installed OpenSuse 11.1 using the volumes placed within extended partitions (user-specific configuration). The Installation worked correctly. Logical volumes have been formatted to

2 GB of swap (swap Linux, / dev/sda5)
    20 GB ext3 (Linux root ' / ' on/dev/sda6)
    21 GB unformatted (Linux "/ home" on/dev/sda6)

during the installation of Linux. Linux and Vista up and running with their scores. If I look at the hard drive with Linux' partitioning tool, I see three main partitions + range, as expected. The scope contains the Linux partitions + empty disk space.

    HOWEVER:
    ========

If I look at the hard drive with the Vista disk management tool now, I get the following image:

    invisible 1.46 GB, primary
C:, ~ 100 GB NTFS, primary, active, System
    E:, ~ 98 GB NTFS, primary, data
2 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
20 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
21 GB PRIMARY, no format info displayed
    Empty remaining 54 GB space

    This means:
VISTA DISK MANAGMENT ME PRESENT 6 PRIMARY PARTITIONS WITHOUT ANY COMPLAIN
Although a hard drive on the PC architecture usually only supports maximum 4 primary partitions.

    Issues related to the:

Have you ever seen a similar behavior?

Is this a bug of presentation in the Vista disk management tool?

Or is it a bug in formatting under Linux?

Is there a solution for this problem?

At present, the two BONES work very well. However, the disk will be get permanently damaged as soon as I try to create more partitions in the empty space left?

Sincere greetings and thanks for your comments.

    Girard

    > Have you ever see similar behavior?
    NO.

    > Is this a bug of presentation in the Vista disk management tool?
I doubt that it is a bug, I think you forgot something.

As far as I know you can create 4 partitions on the HARD drive and this is the reason why you have the ability to create an extended partition.
An extended partition can be divided into several logical drives.

That is why it s wise to create a primary partition for Windows OS for example and an extended partition, which can decompose the in logical drives (partitions) different.

However, I put t see a problem if everything works properly

  • "disk read error" and "error loading operating system"

    Hello

I have a problem with my N100 0768 BSG with Windows XP system. When I turned it on there was a screen lenovo with a sign: "to stop the start normal lenovo care press on" as usual. But after that, instead of loading Windows there is a sign: "disc error". I restarted it, rescue and recovery execution and process of recovery.

However, after about 20 minutes of the recovery process, I saw a blue screen with an error and I could just shut down the computer. When I turned on it again, it was screen lenovo and after that I saw: "error loading operating system". I rebooted it but now I can not even run "rescue and recovery".

I downloaded a program of diagnosis of lenovo site, he engraved on dvd and run on my lenovo. When he was doing the "test Surface Scan" my drive hard, there was an error: ' error: found incorrigible error data.»

I thought to buy rescue and lenovo recovery cd, but I heard that they do not sell in Poland.

    Please help me.

    Sorry for my English.

    Because of this:

"When it was the"test Surface Scan"my drive hard, there was an error: ' error: found incorrigible error given."

you might need a new hard drive, or need a scanner that can repair bad sectors.

At the time where you buy new hd and will find the recovery discs,

    It can be expensive!

I run Linux Mint on my N100 and it works very well. Cost, only the hd.

Or, if you can get your hands on a disk full OEM version of your current operating system.

You can use the Microsoft COA on bottom of laptop and install

from scratch. I did it too, and it works with a phone

call the automated Microsoft activation, if it will not be activated. Then, you

    install your drivers, etc..

Remember, you do not sures go back to a "factory-installed",

because that includes all unnecessary software that comes with the laptop originally

and is now outdated in 3 years! There are other choices.

  • Disk management does not allow me to partition the unused space

When I was installing windows I deleted my primary partition and an extended partition. I wanted to consolidate the space in a larger primary partition, but the installer would not consolidate the unused space, there were a multitude of unused space in each partition, I hit refresh, I have sailed on the installation and then headed in disk management again and still no dice. But it allows me to create a primary partition, but not a different scope, so I figure wrong install and try again, but within windows, still no dice. The only option available for this space is 'create new simple volume', I can walk through and get ready to create, but when I hit ok on the last window I get an error "There is not enough free space on the disk to complete this operation" if I put it to the maximum or minimum size, I get the same error.

Is it possible to go back on my partition? or I'll have to scrounge something like partition magic and forget trying to do with windows?

    Hi Devarian,

    Thanks for the replies.

When you want to extend a partition, for example the primary partition that you have installed on Windows 7, you should right click on the partition and select EXTEND the VOLUME.  Windows look for free space and give you a reading of how much free space is available to extend the volume of.

Are you right click on the main partition or free space?

  • Creation of partition using disk management in Windows 7

    Hi all

I am setting up a new laptop and I have a question on the partitions.  Creating partition in Windows 7 disk management has the same effect as the creation of a partition before installing the operating system?

For example, let's say we reduce C drive Windows 7 preinstalled C and D through the Windows 7 disk management tool and use the D drive for drive C for Windows and data.

If Windows is corrupted at some point in the future, the scores also get corrupted?  If this is the case we gain nothing - so we could have a data folder in the C drive instead of split-C and D.

Someone told me that the above method is different from creating a partition before installing the operating system.  If the partition is created beforehand, the partition is safe even if the OS is corrupt, so you don't lose your data.

    Is the above correct?

    Thank you!

Creating partition in Windows 7 disk management has the same effect as the creation of a partition before installing the operating system?

-> Yes, but you will find that the native disk management refuses to shrink an existing partition by more than 50% (if there are only!).

If Windows is corrupted at some point in the future, the scores also get corrupted?

->, Depends on where the damage occurs, the file system or partition table.

If this is the case we gain nothing - so we could have a data folder in the C drive instead of split-C and D.

-> There are two big advantages of having your data on a separate drive:

-L' backup image you create system partition is much smaller and does not grow.

-When you restore an image, your data is not overwritten.

Someone told me that the above method is different from creating a partition before installing the operating system.  If the partition is created beforehand, the partition is safe even if the OS is corrupt, so you don't lose your data.

-> There is no difference. A partition is a partition, regardless of the way in which you create it.

  • Virtual Disk Manager "the device is not ready".

I don't know about the format from outside, possibly MAC OS EXTENDED. He was not ejected a Mac and will not mount on an operating system MAC or PC (Windows 7 Professional) using Firewire (800 to 800 and 800 to 400), eSATA and USB 2.0. When I use disk management, disk will appear as not initialized and next to the "disk 33", there is a red arrow pointing down. Whenever I open the Disk Manager, the window to initialize the disk appears, but once I chose a style of partition and press OK, the virtual disk manager pops up saying "the device is not ready". I also tried to wipe the drive using CMD, (disc of DiskPart/list / select disk 33/clean), CMD said the drive was clean, but when I went to disk management, without change.

"You cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions".

How to fix this or go around with another method to create partitions?

    Hello

You will need to convert the dynamic disk before creating the extra partition. To do this in disk management:

-Right-click the disk 0 (gray area) which indicates the total size of your hard drive

    -Select 'convert to dynamic disk.

Once you have converted to dynamic disk, you will be able to go and create the new simple partition.

    I hope this helps.

I bought a sony vgnfz240e made a restore disk that day until something was done with my laptop.  A little later, they had me try to restore and it did not work said there was something wrong with my hardware. I'm finally back and at that time there there is no notes on the book of sony that I needed to make new disks but I asked the technicians of the company if I were to make a new.  Says no, and now that I went to reset my computer to factory settings it is errors on the disk and is not a corrupt disk either.  I show no operating system, but they say that there is a way.  I need help.  I have vista home Premium can someone help me please.

    http://eSupport.Sony.com/

Here are the General information relating to the recovery.

Contact Sony for the exact details.

How to get Vista recovery Media or the Vista recovery Partition on your computer back to factory settings.

There is no Vista free download legal available.

Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.

See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.

Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...

Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.

Also ask them if it is possible to do the recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

They will tell you how to do this.

Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

After installation > go to the website of the manufacturer of your computer/notebook > drivers and downloads Section > key in your model number > get latest Vista drivers for it > download/install them.

Save all data, because it will be lost during a clean installation.

    See you soon.
