Disk utility OSX not letting u/c partition names

I recently changed the HARD drive on my Macbook Pro to a crucial SSD 1 TB.  At the time I thought that the HARD drive was faulty so used the Mac online recovery to reinstall the original OSX (Mountain Lion).  When I appointed the SSD partition it only let me use the upper case for the name of the partition.   I had already improved Cougar to the Mavericks so there were a few problems with some on application data, so I decided to do a new install directly from Time Machine.  This good all looked and noticed that Time Machine renamed partition SSD the original name of the disk partition HARD and that this name was a mixture of upper case and lower case letters.

After that, I decided it would be useful to have a second external USB backup drive, but for the second disc I tried to partition the drive into three partitions all formatted in Mac OS X extended (journaled).  More utility disk once only would allow me to only use capitals in partition names.

Since OSX is happily using the partition with uppercase letters and lowercase names I'm puzzled what disk utility is forcing me to use uppercase letters.  The only thing I can think is that SSD and USB disk could have been previously formatted with FAT32 and it was inhibiting the disk utility.  Does anyone have ideas better?

Here's the new disks that are not configured for Macs. Follow these steps:

Drive partition and format

1. open utility disk from the Applications\utilitaires folder.

2. after disk utility charges select the new SSD entry (this is the entrance Out-bumpy with of the mfgr.) ID and size) in the list on the left. Click the Partition tab in the main window of disk utility.

3. in the title of the Volume entitled plan set the number of partitions in the menu drop-down one. Click the Options button, set the GUID partition scheme, and then click the OK button. Set the type of Mac OS extended (journaled) format. Click on the apply button and wait until the process is complete.

Repeat for the USB drive.

I tried using terminal but I have been unable to fix this way, too.

    Thank you

Make sure that all your files are backed up. Accidents happen and I'd hate for you to lose all data.

Are you trying to repartition the boot disk? If I understand correctly, your hard disk is currently partitioned, and you need to recover a single correct hard drive?

You can't repair the disk hard while you use the hard disk. To get the partition on a single disk, boot from the recovery disc.

Restart the computer and press immediately on and hold command-R until you see a loading bar, and then release the keys. Once the recovery disc starts, choose your language (if it asks you to) and then again open disk utility. Now, select your hard drive and delete the extra partition. It should tell you "this will not affect your files...". "but if he says that you will lose all data, STOP. Make sure that you remove the extra partition without data on this subject. I'm guessing that it's called "Untitled 1" or something that affects unless you named it something different.

  • Samsung EVO850 plus disk Util is not smart

    HI -.

I have a MacBook Pro 15 "late 2011, for which I bought a 1 to Samsung EVO 850 SSD."  I want to replace the internal MacHD with the SSD.

I have the external SSD drive hooked to the MBP using a StarTech USB2 for SATA docking station.  Using disk utility I erased the SSD and reformatted using OSX journaled Extended.  The process took seconds to complete.  However when I check the S.M.A.R.T. status on the SSD TO THE shows 'not supported '.  Also (probably part of the same problem) - if I try to restore the MacHHD on the SSD I get the message "the restore process failed" and "volume of the Source is read-write and cannot be disassembled, so it cannot be copied from block.

-What is the problem?  I don't know that this EVO 850 is compatible with this MBP.  Disk utility is quite simple.  But the result is not SMART.  Did I miss a step?  How can I reformat this SSD to support the Smart function.

    TIA your entry,

    Josh

    -What is the problem?

The only thing wrong with what you mentioned is your understanding of it. everything works as expected.

I have the external SSD drive hooked to the MBP using a StarTech USB2 for SATA docking station.

in general, docking stations, in individuals and external drives do not support SMART status.

Smart seemed like a good idea when it was invented, but it fell away, far from being useful. It indicates usually that your reader has a hard time AFTER that the car exploded. Or he reports that your drive is about to die, three years before his actual death.

If I try to restore the MacHHD on the SSD, I get the message "the restore process failed" and "volume of the Source is read-write and cannot be disassembled, so it cannot be copied from block".

You cannot copy the Volume Mac OS X is running to use the copy of disk utility that is on the Source Volume. Disk utility insists the drive mounted, so that no one else has the ability to change the contents of the disc while you are copying. You can't unmount the disk because Mac OS X is started from, so you cannot copy the path you want.

If you want to make this copy, start under Recovery HD (which is another partition on your boot drive) and use the disk utility it. Then you can copy the Mac OS X Volume (but not the Volume of recovery HD, because it will be busy.

  • Disk utility does not not what Time Machine backup connected / file Vault question?

    Hi all

    I'm on Mac OSX El Capitan 10.11.3 (15 d 21) on a Macbook Pro 8.2 (early 2011)

Previously, when File Vault was not activated I've been able to backup on my external drive for Time Machine (1 TB store Transcend jet) and the drive was visible when opening disk utility no problem...

Now since I have encrypted my first Macintosh HD using File Vault, my disk utility program will not load when my Time Machine (unencrypted) external backup disk is connected, and I can not back up by using the application Time Machine (the player is simply not visible).

When my external drive for Time Machine is not connected, my disk utility opens very well and I can see my Macintosh HD all external USB drives.

I tried to re-boot, I tried to disconnect all external devices, I tried to connect the Time Machine drive with two USB ports and I tried to open the first disk utility, and then connect the external drive for Time Machine without success.

Anyone else have experience with this problem or something similar? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much!

  • CyberLink recovery disk utility: can not burn to disc when you try the recovery computer

    Hi all

Recently, my hard drive on my HP Pavilion p6674y was wiped out. I have a new hard drive installed in the computer. I created my own recovery DVDs when I bought the computer first. I started with the recovery discs and all was well until about 70% (on the 2 CD at this stage of 3) and then I got an error "0xe0ef000e.

I then did some research and have ordered the discs of recovery from HP and then saw that I must download and burn to disc recovery disks Cyberlink utility so that the discs work. I have serious problems this CD to burn. I followed the instructions and when it is to the burning time of the installation wizard CD does not burn. It says on the wizard I'm full and there is a 'yes' 'no' and the button "Cancel". When I hit Yes the computer I currently use just restarts. I then try the disc (even if I can say that it's always empty) in my Pavilion and the checkmark never comes to the top.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

    Help, please.

    Thank you

    Hello:

This utility is not absolutely necessary.

You only need if the HP recovery discs do not work on your new hard drive.

I tried to run the file on Windows 8 and it wrong, then I won't be able to help you with that.

While you wait for your drives HP recovery plant to arrive, you can make your own plain W7 installation media and use that to install W7, so at least you can use your PC.

Here is how to do this.  My only review of the instructions is not to activate W7, unless you want to. Just skip entered the product key from the COA Microsoft sticker on your PC case.

You have 30 days to use the program without activating it.

Link to downloads ISO of W7 is below. Download the Windows 7 version that is on your product (Home Premium, professional or ultimate) key to apply.  SP1 Refresh of media files are the latest ISO files.

    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-multiple-languag...

Use the installation of Windows 7 USB/DVD tool to compile the ISO file that you download from Digital River. The link below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive using the USB compilation method.

Use the product key of windows 7 of 25 characters to activate your installation.

    http://download.CNET.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-download-tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html

Then go to the support of the PC and driver page to install the drivers you need.

  • Disk management does not allow me to partition the unused space

When I was installing windows I deleted my primary partition and an extended partition. I wanted to consolidate the space in a larger primary partition, but the installer would not consolidate the unused space, there were a multitude of unused space in each partition, I hit refresh, I have sailed on the installation and then headed in disk management again and still no dice. But it allows me to create a primary partition, but not a different scope, so I figure wrong install and try again, but within windows, still no dice. The only option available for this space is 'create new simple volume', I can walk through and get ready to create, but when I hit ok on the last window I get an error "There is not enough free space on the disk to complete this operation" if I put it to the maximum or minimum size, I get the same error.

Is it possible to go back on my partition? or I'll have to scrounge something like partition magic and forget trying to do with windows?

    Hi Devarian,

    Thanks for the replies.

When you want to extend a partition, for example the primary partition that you have installed on Windows 7, you should right click on the partition and select EXTEND the VOLUME.  Windows look for free space and give you a reading of how much free space is available to extend the volume of.

Are you right click on the main partition or free space?

  • Disk utility can not create large image of drive (60 GB) on the network share

    Disc Utiity (Versie 15.0 (1511.3)):

I am creating a disc from a hard disk image. I want to save the image on a Synology DS414 network share.

The share is accessible a there is no active disk quota.

I copied a large file via Finder (384 MB) to the \\partagereseau that works.

When I try to record a copy of disk sharing (60 GB), I get the following message:

Unsatisfactory area is available on "(null)" to create the NAME of diskimage. Choose another volume with at least 60 GB of available space and continue.

Summary: I can create large files on the share, but the disc utilities cannot?

    Greetings Wim

384 MB is nowadays is no longer considered to be a file of "big."

You don't mention how much space is actually available on the Synology but for arguments sake, we will assume that more than 60 GB of space is available.

So in theory it should be possible to create a disk image of 60 GB (no doubt), there is enough space available. As you say there is no set of storage quotas and I'm happy to believe that. I think that the issue could be more to do with the maximum allowed size of the file, remember that I mentioned that 384 is actually not much, although some systems have a limit of 4 GB for a single file, for example FAT32 file systems have such a limit. In theory the FAT32 limit should not apply here because almost all including Synology NAS servers actually use Linux as the underlying software and so use Ext3 or Ext4 as file system, not FAT32. Same Ext2 a fortiori Ext3 or Ext4 allowing individuals will produce up to 2 TB of size which is clearly much larger than 60 GB.

Still it could be related to that question even if it is necessary as an unnecessary and artificial limit may be for example to ensure compatible with other systems using FAT32.

If you have enough space on the Mac, you could create and try to copy on the Synology, however another approach which is probably better all around is to create a "sparsebundle disk image. It's a disc image, but another type and will work around this problem because it is in fact made up of lots of all small files attached together. As that user do you see this as image a big drive, but the computer sees it as a folder full of files much smaller.

    UPDATE *.

    @Highdeny

The procedure described in these two positions has worked for me. I would recommend after them in the following order:

    1) use of the Adobe Creative Cloud cleaning tool to solve installation problems

    (2) Office CC lists the applications as "up to date" when it is not installed

I tried to uninstall everything before my original post, but I uninstalled the app CC the second time that I uninstalled it directly since uninstalling programs before using the "cleaner" (see #1).

I also removed all Adobe my system (preference files, etc.). Who could be exaggerated, but I was so frustrated at that time here, I didn't like.

    I hope this helps!

If the disc is not visible in disk utility, you can try to connect to another computer and check it or reformat if all else fails.

a disc formatted in anything other than extended journaled Mac will not be usable with Time Machine. If you need to reformat the drive in NTFS or FAT or ExFat, format Windows PC then reconnect to the mac, once the drive is recognized, reformat with extended Mac.

It is also possible that the drive is dead. If it is still under warranty it can be replaced, but manufacturers don't offer a premium-free data recovery. see the manufacturer's Web site. you will need the serial number of the drive.
