Do > 2 TB physical RDM NEED Directpath IO?

I've been struggling with this for over a week now so I could really use some advice.

5.1 ESXi

I need to install three hard drives 3 to and give them direct access to a virtual computer running FreeNAS (or other) for a ZFS ZRAID configuration to store data.

From my research, it looks like a physical RDM is my best solution. I want that the BONES of the VM to exert direct and complete control to readers with title bit VM intervention as possible. Reason being, I want readers to be able to be exchanged in a physical server to spare if necessary to recover the data.

I am able to do a physical RDM using the command line and I'm able to add them in a virtual machine. Once attached, they do not work in the operating system. The operating system can see the disks, but may not use it.

I am unable to make the virtual RDM because obviously, readers are more 2 TB - 512 k.

Where can I activate? Do I NEED to have material supporting Directpath IO to use the large RDM? I can't confirm this, but it's the only thing else that I can think of. New versions of ESXi should support up to 64 TB with the RDM...

My hardware does not support Directpath IO so I can't spend it just a map of entire storage with the disks attached. But I can buy a new motherboard supporting the pull-out decision if that's the answer. Also, for the physics of the RDM will I need to pass to the virtual machine a whole controller (card) or can I just use the physical RDM as on the use of the SATA connectors on board?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ;-)

What type of storage do you use? ISCSI or FC?

You certainly don't need direct i/o path for a raw device mapping physics > 2 TB (-512). So that you can safe money

What's that it is mentioned in vmkernel.log when you join the RDM?

We are about to move a bunch of RDM to VMDK, but we need to convert physical to virtual RDMs first (you can live storage migration [to VMDK] with virtual RDM but not medical examinations). The other part of the story is that we are running vSphere 5.5 and are about to upgrade to vSphere 6.0

KB wrote on October 17, 2014 and I wonder if this is still the method support in vSphere 6.0 and that it has not been updated; or if it is no longer supported, in which case I have to do the migration before the upgrade?

I see no reason why this will not work in vSphere 6, given that the procedure is simply to remove the physical RDM disks and add them again as RDM virtual disks... In my view, that the KB is just outdated.

  • Independent drive persistent and physical RDM Mode

    Hi all

Need your opinion on taking snapshot backup in option of the few VMs via NBU 7.6

We intend to resume via auto-created snapshot NBU, but is that all VM have persistent independent drive along with some VMs have physical RDM Mode.

I am aware that the physical RDM mode supports not instant, but is independent of the persistent drive?

  • SLES + OCFS2 shared physical RDM

I intend to install a cluster node Linux SLES OCFS2 using a RDM in physical mode 3.

I did this once before with both VM and set bus SCSI physical Division on the 1st virtual machine, and then for the 2nd server selected the 1st mapping VMDK file. This gave the desired effect to allow the physical RDM to be shared, but meant that vMotion was not possible for one of these two servers.

What I intend to do this time is to configure all the same VM 3, everyone has the physical RDM attached without bus sharing together on the SCSI bus.  This is possible, I think that, by setting config.vpxd.filter.rdmFilter to false before you add the ROW to each virtual machine. Then the anti-affinites rules will be set to stop 3 VM running on the same host. This should allow the sharing of the RDM OCFS2 and vMotion of virtual machines.

I think it will work. Can someone tell me if there are problems with it? Is this a supported configuration?

    Thank you

    Neil.

More than 2 nodes is not supported by VMware. OCFS2 supports more than two nodes. It has been popular with Oracle RAC, until everyone has opted for the DSO. While VMware does exactly what the no-MSCS Clustering support or requirements are. Most of the things are based on the limitations of MSCS clusters in VMware. I am about to implement a number of clusters for a customer with OCFS2, but will be limited to two nodes. • Problem of cluster Failover MS after physical RDM conversion to VMDK

    Hello

Last week I had to migrate 7 x 2-nodes virtual MS Failover clusters to a new data center. All clusters have been configured with the configuration of the cabin and all shared disks were in physical RDM mode.

The target data center does not RDM disks so I had to convert all RDM disks VMDK files and use config before the migration of the IPC.

I used vmkfstools to convert VMDK eagdrzeroedthick RDM files.

5 clusters have been migrated successfully, but two cluster got strange question even if the procedure for all groups was the same.

So in two groups, I have a problem where the second node in the cluster can not put online some of the shared disks. The first nodes in the clusters have no problem with the disks/SSP.

But when I try to failover of all services, the second node may not bring online disc 1 or 2 shared, even if she can put the other shared disks online.

VMKernel.log is not errors or warnings. I checked the configuration of virtual machines and everything seems OK.

Any ideas what I could check?

Just in case anyone else is facing the same problem.

I could not find the root cause of the problem, even if it's without a doubt the conversion that triggered the problem. However, we found quite a simple solution - added new shared VMDK files, copied the files over and replaced the defective discs.

  • Limitations of architecture with replication of VM with physical RDM Mode

What are the Limitations of Architecture with replication of VM connected with physical RDM Mode in vsphere replication. Why VMware does not support this?

I will add some colors to the response of GS. A particular interest with regard to the physical path RDM (pRDM) works, summarize these two chips of the article:

    • Physical mode specifies minimal virtualization SCSI of the mapped device, allowing greater flexibility for SAN management software.
    • VMkernel passes all SCSI commands to the device, with one exception - the REPORT LUNS command is virtualized, so that the VMkernel can isolate the LUN to the virtual machine owner. Otherwise, all the physical characteristics of the underlying hardware are exposed.

There is an integrated in vSphere vSphere (RV) replication agent that has several functions. In particular, she keeps track of the Scriptures to the virtual machine. When a replication cycle occurs, the changed data is replicated to the target location. The VR agent should be able to 'see' These Scriptures to follow. Given that the physical mode all SCSI commands directly to the device, the VR agent is unable to follow these changes for replication.

  • How to get the number of LUN to physical RDM assigned to VM?

    Hi people,

Is it possible to get the LUN ID or number of a RDM physical disk attached to a virtual from Windows using PowerCLI machine?

    Thank you.

    Hi Albert,

the first PowerCLI script will give the LUN ID or the number of physical RDM disks attached to a virtual machine for ESX 3.5 servers:

    Get-VM | `
    Get-HardDisk | `
    Where-Object {$_.DiskType -eq "RawPhysical"} | `
    Select-Object -Property @{N="VM";E={$_.Parent}},
      @{N="HardDisk";E={$_.Name}},
      @{N="Lun";E={$_.ScsiCanonicalName.Split(":")[-1]}}

The second script PowerCLI will give you the LUN ID or number of a RDM physical disk attached to a virtual machine for 4 ESX servers:

    Get-VM | `
    Get-HardDisk | `
    Where-Object {$_.DiskType -eq "RawPhysical"} | `
    Select-Object -Property @{N="VM";E={$_.Parent}},
      @{N="HardDisk";E={$_.Name}},
      @{N="Lun";E={
        $HardDisk = $_
        $lun = Get-VMHost -VM $_.Parent | `
          Get-ScsiLun -LunType Disk | `
          Where-Object {$_.CanonicalName -eq $HardDisk.ScsiCanonicalName}
        [int](Select-String ":L(?\d+)$" `
            -InputObject $lun.RuntimeName).Matches[0].Groups['lunID'].Value
      }}

Thanks to Luke for his blog post the making of a New VIProperty called Monday who gave me the idea for the regular expression.

  • SQL snapshots in physical RDM mode help?

If a virtual machine with a drive located on a RDM in physical mode, doing things like SQL snapshots work?

There is a discussion where some people wondered if them soon be virtualized servers SQL must use internal iSCSI client to connect directly to a SAN logical unit number or if you are using a physical RDM mode. They were not sure if features like SQL snapshots work.

Operating system doesn't "know" what type of disc it uses (virtual physical RDM, RDM virtual disk), so that all the functions as snapshots made within the OS itself will work the same. It's only the instant VMware that has no effect on a physical RDM.

  • Physical RDM between SAN copy

    Hello

We have two virtual MSCS and we are now in a Bill to amend the SAN. The two use RDM physical disk cluster. It's a SQL 2008 and a Biztalk 2009. The two Windows 2008 x 64.

Our current SAN cannot communicate with the new, so I need to copy the ROW data through vmware (SSH).

    So I run this command:

    vmkfstools clonevirtualdisk--/vmfs/volumes/Datastore01/SQLSRV01/SQLSRV01.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/NewSAN/Datastore01/SQLSRV01_Mig/Data.vmdk--diskformat rdmp:/vmfs/devices/disks/naa.60002ac0000000000000009c00004936 < < new SAN

In one of the piles, its 7 discs. And 6 of them works very well, but the 7th. It won't work. The copy works well, but he's not going online in the cluster. I think he has to do something with the drive id. And no, can't do repairs on it.

Someone at - it experince this before and know how to solve?

    Hello

Solved this problem by removing the disc that failed and created a new disc RDM.

Copied the external data before and just copied again.

  • Migrrating a physical RDM to EMC for NetApp.

I'm at the stage of planning for a replacement of SAN.  I need to find a painless and easy to migrate an RDM EMC for NetApp RDM.  He must remain in physical mode as it was created for a MS cluster in two boxes of ESXi.  The research I've read said that you must use tools such as the SAN, but when you have two WHO do not play nice with them what your options are?

Although it would be possible to migrate the RDM using vmkfstools, I think that you will have less downtime with help e.g. robocopy. With robocopy, you can make a copy of the original, while the old ONE is still active and perform a final synchronization of data just before moving to the new LUN.

  • Convert physical RDM to RDM virtual disc Exchange

    Hi all

I need to convert a shared disk (SAN LUNS) used by Exchange 2007 SP1 of RDM physical to virtual RDM, I would like to have a confirmation fo this strategy:

    1. Turning off the virtual Exchange Server computer

    2. Remove the disc in the virtual machine configuration vRDM mode (not the disc, of course)

    3. Fix the disc in mode pRDM

    4. Turn on the virtual machine

    Question:

    This stratey is correct?

could I have a problem with the disc will type?

    Thanks in advance

    Angelo

    Hello.

That's it – you can document the file mapping according to how many of them you have.  The procedure is also documented in KB 1006599.

  • SRM and physical RDM Mode

The response must do the exact opposite of your concerns, but I left out some details, so I'll try to clarify this point.

The signature in question is a part of the logical volume manager, consists of the ID of LUN as seen by the ESXi host and the disk number of the LUN of the data store.  This value is written as metadata in the header of VMFS volume.  In the case of a ROW, there is no VMFS file system, so there is no signature to worry.
