  Where do you see the .appref-ms extension? You try to install a program?

  From the Start Page, type in the Panel. In the left pane, click Control Panel to open.
  Click default programs. Then click "associate a file type or Protocol with a specific program.

  You see a list of file type, .appref-ms? I stated it in my Windows 8. The description is the ClickOnce Application. The default to open this type of file is a click once Application Deployment Support Library.
