  You can use Disk Defragmenter and check if the problem persists.

  To defragment your hard drive

  1. open the disk by clicking the Start button Defragmenter. In the search box, type and then Disk Defragmenter in the list of results, click Disk Defragmenter.

  2. under status, select the disk to defragment.

  3. to determine whether the disk should be defragmented or not, click Analyze disk.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of disk fragmentation in the last run column. If the number is greater than 10%, you must defragment the drive.

  4. click on defragment disk. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  Based on my experience wih other external Seagate, the problem could be a faulty cable or a faulty case. I deal with two external Seagate whose pens were bad, specifically the removable base containing power/data connectors. In one case, Seagate sent me a replacement base and that solved the problem.
