ScottishWidow,

You said: "I HAVE NO SYNAPTIC POINTING DEVICE IT has STOPPED WORKING.  If you wanted to say that your laptop's built-in mouse has stopped working, so maybe I can help you.

That said, you can't fix it without being able to 'click '. As you have not mentioned the brand, the model of the computer, I offer the following.  Some laptops have a characteristic that "locks" the synaptic pad. It is normally used to prevent the pad from interfering with typing.  You need to look in the manual or ask by mentioning the brand, the model of the computer.

If it is not "locked."

(1) buy or borrow a USB mouse. Plug it into the USB port of your laptop.

(2) Vista will automatically detect the mouse and install the necessary driver. Now you have a real mouse.

(3) with this, you can fix your problem. It could be as simple as going into Device Manager and all items with attachment indicator.

A "synaptic pointing device" means integrated laptop mouse.  This means that she cannot mouse click on anything, as an applicant, click on send, open a program.
